There are beautiful trees everywhere and our site was very quiet. Site 62 has a small slice of a view of the lake but not much shade. The site was level with gravel; there is a "patio area" that is composed of small rocks with a fire pit and lantern pole. There is only one bathhouse in the campground, which doesn't seem enough, however, I never had to wait. The bathrooms are more than adequate for a state campground, while we were there, one of the showers didn't have a shower head, and staff said they would look into it right away. Camp staff was very friendly and helpful. Interior roads are easy to navigate. Verizon worked great and we received a good selection of OTA channels. We would definitely stay again. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Stayed in spot #36 with our 40' motorhome. It was an easy pull through. The spot was at the beginning of a little cul-de-sac, which is how most of the loops are here. It would have been a bit tricky to drive around the curve of the cul-de-sac, but it was easy enough to back up. Dump is at the front. Many spots are heavily treed. Ours was not, which we request for satellite. Most spots have views of the lake. It's a very pretty park, lots of birds singing, little walking trails here and there. Verizon signal was good on and off. Very clean, very quiet, cement pad for concrete picnic table, with grill and fire pit off to the side. We loved it here. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Lots of little towns nearby with all the stores you need. Atlanta about 40 minutes away, north Georgia mountains with wineries and farms about 1 1/2 away. Love Mercier Orchards.

Stayed in site with no power or electricity on the lake. Good space between sites. Long walk to bathroom from site. Stayed on a Thursday night. Very few people in the park. Hosts that checked me in were very friendly. Cleanliness of bathrooms was okay. Did not use beach. Gates opened at 7am and closed at 10:30pm. Stayed 1 night. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Tent.

This is a COE park and is typical. Water and electric with a dump station. Most sites are located on water and have beach access. All sites have fire rings and a concrete table. It is off the road from the interstate and might not be suitable for a overnight. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Fifth Wheel.

The rate reflects a senior discount. We really liked this campground. We were not on the water but had a very comfortable, shady, and level spot near the restrooms. The hosts checked on us regularly and even with the campground mostly filled, it was very quiet. The restrooms and showers were spotless. We will be back to this campground. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Motorhome.

Great waterfront sites, but no shade. It's not the campground's fault. Campsites are close together and the 2 times we've camped here, we've noticed lots of young families. This would have been perfect when our kids were younger. Even my daughter, 13, loved the beach. I just prefer a little more privacy/distance from our neighbors and shade. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Tent Trailer.

We enjoyed the campground. The good: sites close enough to the lake to park your boat, bathrooms somewhat clean, sites level, hosts VERY friendly. The bad: no shade (not campground's fault, pine beetles), bring EZ ups. We'll be back! We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Tent Trailer.

Date of Stay: June, 2007 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This COE campground is a bit of a disappointment, although much of what makes it less than ideal is no fault of management: about half of the campground had all the pine trees removed a few years ago, probably from a beetle infestation, and the what's left is pretty scrubby and with very little shade. The sites on the west side loop were still wooded though. We were late making our reservations and had never stayed there, so we unknowingly chose what was probably the worst of the sites in the campground. This campground is among several on Lake Allatoona, and is used mainly by folks coming to enjoy the lake with their boats and jet skis. So it's a bit of a party atmosphere; in fact, some local teenagers booked the site next to ours and held a loud drinking party until 3:00am on Friday night, complete with broken beer bottles and loud music. Our campground hosts must have had their air conditioner on and couldn't hear this commotion despite being only a hundred yards away. Surely they would otherwise have come down and put an end to this. On the plus side, the hosts were very friendly and the comfort stations were clean and modern. The sites on the east side of the campground are very close to one another, and the absence of trees makes you feel like you've stumbled upon a worn down trailer park. The west side sites are better, more spacious, and shady. If you are considering the Lake Allatoona area, a better choice nearby would be McKinney Campground. We won't be staying here again - our first impression was a lasting one! We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Travel Trailer.

This campground seems to be a bit run down. The only shaded sights were not on the water. It was noticeable that several trees had been cut down. Weeds were growing tall and several sights were surrounded by poison ivy. Restrooms were worn but clean. Camp hosts were accommodating, but we never saw anyone patrol the area. Lots of tent campers here with boats. We camped at Payne Campground COE in a Motorhome.
