We made our reservations online. You cannot reserve a specific site...only one that's appropriate for the length of your rig. You have to pay a $5 fee for your toad....but only once for your camping stay. When you get there, check in at the gift shop and then go pick your site. We rode through in the car first before taking the motorhome in. There are two parts of the campground. The lower portion is closer to the lake, but the road on that side is very hilly and has lot of deep potholes. It's one-way through the campground so you have to go all the way through. The upper portion has better roads. We had no trouble getting level but some sites looked like it could be difficult. There is almost no AT&T or Verizon service. We were able to get service as we left the park and on some of the overlooks on the hikes. Beware of the poison ivy that's everywhere! Restrooms and showers were nice. Laundry is still 75 cents for washer & dryer. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

We ate at the Village Cafeteria in Chatsworth. It's been there for years and has great food at very reasonable prices.

One of the nicest State Parks we've stayed at. Many of the sites are pull through and are remarkably level considering where you are. One of the camping loops is on a decent sized lake with paddle boat rentals and swimming. The place is drop dead gorgeous. If you are using this campground as a base to see the area with, the drive up and down the mountain is a minor issue, but you get used to it. If you are going there to stay, there's plenty of hiking and biking trails in the park. Some of the views are amazing. Given a choice between staying at Ft Mountain vs somewhere in the valley, I'd pick the mountain. North Georgia can be hot and humid. The mountain takes the edge off. Very surprised that they had cable there. Nice touch!!! Only warning is that cell coverage is weak to non-existent. Plan on going through cell and web withdrawal. The good news is that as long as you're on the mountain, the office can't find you!!! We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There's a trendy town called Ellijay nearby. Very cool place. Springer Mountain GA isn't far away. From a Forrest Service road, you can hike about a mile into the start of the Appalachian Trail. The Forrest Service road is gravel but I had no problem in a Honda.

Very beautiful property with a lovely lake. Government ineptitude on full display here with the main building at the lake falling apart, interior roads of the campground section mainly comprised of potholes, the campsites unkempt and in need of gravel, but they just spent millions on new site built rental homes! Also 4 of my mornings here were ruined by heavy machinery and mowers running at 8:30 am. I was informed that "tony " the maintainance manger decided 7 am was fine for running mowers, blowers, tractors etc. The park is unable to enforce their own rules, as people were drinking and staying past dark at the beach area, taking boats out without paying, dogs off leash etc. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Fort Mountain is a beautiful state park high in the mountains of Northern Georgia. Our site was very large, fully paved, pull-through site with a large fire ring and picnic table as well as full hookups, including cable TV all nestled under tall trees and just across campground street from large, clean rest rooms, showers and laundry. (This was a handicapped site)

The drive up the mountain from Chatsworth, GA includes lots of switchbacks and relatively steep grades, but it also offered magnificent views. There is a lake, hiking trails and an old, restored lookout tower in the park. It is very popular so reservations are strongly suggested. We made our in April for an Oct. visit--but it was worth the hassle of early reservations. One of the nicest state parks we have been in. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Beautiful area, especially in early Oct. Take time to explore the park and allow plenty of time to drive into Chatsworth or Elijay. Both were wonderful, mountain-side villages, full of apple orchards and good antique shops yet not so commercialized to have lost their natural beauty.

Warning - do not attempt to stay here in a larger rig. This site accurately states the park is not big rig friendly, but the Georgia State Park website states there are 42 sites that will accept up to a 50' trailer or motorhome. Due to the contradiction, we called the park directly and they said no problem for our 45' DP. Should have listened to the other reviewer on this site that said don't bother with a 38' plus rig. Reservations are not site specific, and at the time we were here, we could pick from just about any site. My wife and I drove around for 30 minutes in our toad and finally selected a site we could make it into (barely) but could not fully level the motorhome without a tire or 2 in the air. Anyway, we made it in without using KY jelly on the sides of the rig, but did have my wife as a spotter on several campground turns as well as backing into the site. Again, this was the site we selected - had it not been available, I'm not sure I would have even tried too many others (unlevel, difficult access for longer rigs, etc.). Now for the good - if you are a smaller unit - sites are well spaced and woodsy. Nice trails, decent lake for kids to swim or canoe, a typical but nice state park. I would return if I had a much smaller rig. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Love Fort Mountain; it had just snowed when we arrived, but roads were passable, beautiful scenery. Check-in was easy, get to pick your site, park staff and campground host very friendly. We camped in Loop #2 which has more spacious sites and on the lake; sites were fairly level, roads are tight for larger rigs and need some improvement, since it was still winter. Concessions, paddle boats, etc. were not open yet, but that was OK as we hiked the many trails, especially around the lake. Campground power 20/30/50 Amp, water good, and cable TV worked well. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Town of Chatsworth nearby, if you need propane buy it at Tractor Supply as they sell it by the gallon; Ace Hardware has fixed price so if you go there, make sure your bottle is empty. Also nearby, groceries, fuel, shopping.

This was our first visit to the park and we were glad we chose it. The road getting there is a little steep and winding but you are in the Georgia mountains so it's what you'd expect. Be sure to bring all the supplies you'll need as it is a bit of a drive to town. The office staff were very friendly and helpful and check in was easy. You get to pick your site so we drove through both loops and chose the smaller creek side camping loop one. The roads and sites in there seem to be more level and the pull thru sites along the creek look out into the woods and not into another campsite. Campground is nicely wooded with ample space between sites. Restrooms were clean. No problems with water or electric. Plenty to do in the park with hiking trails, paddle boat and canoe rentals, putt putt golf and a beach. We would camp here again. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We love Fort Mountain. Scenery is beautiful and there's lots to do here. Miles of great hiking/running trails are just outside your door. The tails have scenic views and "the fort" itself is interesting historically. Also lots of challenging mountain bike trails. This is one of the few state parks with cable TV. Verizon cell coverage is basically nonexistent. We couldn't even get a good signal with our booster. We stayed in Loop 1 which was very quiet and scenic. Loop 2 seemed to have more tenters and families. This campground would be beautiful in the fall. Chatsworth is nearby if you need groceries. And if you want challenging hiking, the Cohutta Wilderness is adjacent to the park. We even saw two cute black bear cubs on one of the trails in the state park. There are warnings about black bears in the campground, but from what we could see, they didn't really seem to be a problem. Georgia has fantastic state parks and this is one of our favorites. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Don't waste your time if you are bringing a 38-plus motorhome or fifth wheel. Sites are poor at best, very unlevel and not maintained at all. Roads in camping area horrible. If you are coming in a class C or smaller trailer and tent, more options. Bathrooms need re-do. Staff was friendly. Park seemed very run down. Too bad, because it is located in a nice area. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

Perfect setting. Immaculate sites and bathrooms. We were in a site next to the lake. Very pretty and quiet. All the sites were very spacious. However, a larger rig might have trouble getting around some of the turns. Hiking paths were very nice. We will return. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Had a fantastic time here. Spent 3 wonderful days in this lush forest. Staff very friendly and helpful. The only slightly negative problem were the steep uphill climb though the mountains. But my motorhome came through like a champ. The roads were wide, and well maintained. I just would be nervous to do the climb in the winter months. Fantastic value for the $28. I recommend it to all. The sites were really first class, under a lovely forest canopy. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.

This is our 2nd stay at this park and once again we had a wonderful visit. There was plenty of room between us and our neighbor. It is very quite/peaceful all during the day and night. The Park rangers patrolled the park regularly and the trash bins were emptied daily. The bathrooms were clean but we prefer to use our rv facility's mainly. The only problem that I have is the fact that I have yet to catch a fish in the lake. I have tried everything in my tackle box - plenty of fish in the lake though - they swim all around my lure!!! Oh well I guess that's why I will stick with burgers and hotdogs when it comes time for dinner. Happy camping. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This was our first time staying at this park. We had a wonderful time. There is so much to do here. We enjoyed biking, hiking, fishing and of course plenty of good food and fellowship with friends and family. While fishing we seen deer playing in the water on the other side of the lake. Our daughter and one of her friends seen a bear!!!! They thought that was pretty cool. The sites in this park are plenty big and you have plenty of room between you and your neighbor. There are several miles of hiking and biking trails. The scenery is beautiful. The park also offers putt-putt golf, paddle boat and jon-boat rentals. Other than not having good cell phone reception (which that could actually be a positive) this is a wonderful family friendly park that we plan on visiting a lot more often. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This was our second time staying at Ft. Mountain State Park. We continue to enjoy this park so much that we will be returning again in October. The sites are fairly level, or as level as you can expect given the terrain there. There is plenty of shade at each site. The park has a beach area on the lake for people to swim and while the water was fairly cold, there were quite a few people swimming. There are also paddle boats and John boats for rental there ($5). There is a putt putt course here as well. The park has plenty of hiking trails that are fun to hike on. The ranger station has a few items for sale, TP, firewood, some food items, ice, etc. The only drawback I see to the campground, is there are quite a few mosquitoes and gnats around, so bring bug repellent! The park is family and pet friendly. We camped at Fort Mountain State Park in a Motorhome.
