We were unable to get into our first site because of the grade. They immediately accommodated us and gave us another great site. The woman at the gate even took the time to talk to me about signing up for senior lifetime rates which were amazing... half off the campsites. The WiFi was good but no cable. But for $16.00/day what do you expect. We had a beautiful campsite on the water! Highly recommend if you just want to get away. I still had cell phone service at our location so I was able to hot spot to my iPad and computer. I'll be back and it's a great place to disconnect and just unwind. I don't know why we don't have campsites like this in Florida! We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Motorhome.

Nice park, all spots located closed to the water. Great nature trail with a brochure explaining different sightings, lots of wild blueberries. Our site was level once getting past the ramp and dragging our tow bar. Great staff and crew. The sewer system was available after being reported out of service in previous reviews. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Motorhome.

We stopped at this park for one night on our way to Florida. Check in was easy and the people in the office were very friendly. Our site was on the lake and near a small swimming area. Some campers near us had boats that they could beach at the back of their sites. There was a slight grade to the driveway of the site but the parking pad was level. As with most COE campgrounds this one did not disappoint as there was plenty of space between sites and no problems with utilities. Restrooms were clean but small and a little dated. We would camp here again. We camped in a travel trailer. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Typical Corps of Engineers campground, which is to say, excellent. Roomy sites, utilities work as they are supposed to, gorgeous scenery. Be aware, "civilization" is a good distance away. Fort Gaines has fuel and groceries, but if you need Walmart, it's across the lake in Eufaula, AL, as are most of the eating places.

All of the parking pads for your RV are level concrete, but some have a rather steep driveway leading to the road. My site's concrete pad had numerous gouges where RV's with a lot of rear overhang dragged. My truck and fifth wheel had no problems, though. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We love this campground and had a fabulous stay. The only negative was tall grass that we contended with for 10 days. Future negative is, we were notified yesterday that they have discontinued the sewer usage. This is disturbing as this is one of the features most campers look for. So be ready to only have water and electricity in the future. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Eufaula and Dothan are within 30-45 minutes of the facility. Bagby State Park is within 5 minutes. Several restaurants are within 20 minutes and some higher end restaurants are within 30-45 minutes. Grocery story is well stocked in Ft. Gaines. Fuel for boats on the water is outrageous and in Ft. Gaines so be sure to go with a full tank from home.

What a great site we reserved, site 22. We were elevated above water-side sites where campers could anchor their boats near shore. Our site was very private but alas, no TV reception.
As always this campground is typical of other great COE campgrounds. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Motorhome.

This was our first time visiting Cotton Hill and we were very pleased. We picked out our site from some pictures we saw and we weren't disappointed. We had a concrete pad and crushed gravel impact area. Having full hookups was a big plus. We were in the Old Mill section which was the more woodsy section. Had a nice view of Sandy Creek from the rear of the campsite. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: November, 2014 - $28.00
Overall Rating:

This rural campground is typical Corps of Engineers as far as design is concerned. Check-in was prepaid through Recreation.gov, so it was fast and efficient. Hosts were friendly and offered good pointers to nearby restaurants. There are three camping sections: Old Mill Road (Sites 1-50), Marina View (Sites 51-71), and Pine Island (Sites 72-104). Almost all sites are back-in, and waterfront (although there is often some distance of separation from the water). Old Mill Road has no playground, no laundry, and is the most forested environment along a backwater of the lake. Marina View is the sunniest environment, and is also on the backwater. It has a laundry room for $1.25 per load), and a children's playground. Pine Island is open treed and semi-sun, and faces the lake, looking west into Alabama, and in my opinion had the best views. It has a laundry and children's playground, in addition to a concave sandy beach. Sites 95-104 in Pine Island are walk-in tent sites, but still have water and electric. There was a large and tall seawall along sites 101 to 104, could be dangerous for children. We stayed in Pine Island in November, and it was windy and cold. Would opt for Old Mill Road if we came again in colder months to avoid the wind. Bathrooms and showers were spotless. Sprint service was weak, but doable in Pine Island. No data service. But as we moved to Marina View and Old Mill Road, service dramatically improved to 3 bar and 3G. DTV service was outstanding, with PBS, CBS, ABC, and NBC, along with other minor networks, easily available on the batwing antenna with little turning necessary. Many sites are somewhat close together for a COE park, so privacy was not at its best. Most of the sites will have you back down hill. This causes stormwater to drain to the concrete pad, and created a muddy veneer across our pad. Roadways in the park were in very good condition, sites could use an asphalt resurfacing. Each site has water, sewer, and electric. We had no issues with any of the services. Nearby shotgun hunting was noisy in the morning and evening, breaking the quiet at times. Hiking trail around the pond was nice. No dumpsters in any camping loop, only one dumpster area located near the entrance station, about 1/2 mile away from our site, a bit inconvenient, but nothing troublesome. A bit of advice: Given the location of the swimming beach and playground in Pine Island, in the warm months I could imagine sites 83-94 becoming a circus, with people walking through those campsites to access the beach. We would camp here again if in the area, but would opt for Old Mill Road loop in winter, and sites 72-81 in Pine Island in the summer to avoid or take advantage of lake breezes, respectively. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

We used this campground as a base camp to explore Eufaula, Alabama (about 20 miles north), and to take a day trip to Plains (Jimmy Carter National Historical Park) and Andersonville (Andersonville National Historical Park). Note that Americus has a significant downtown and shopping area, beautiful urban shopping district. We ate at Michelle's in Georgetown, and the food was inexpensive and bountiful (we had Thanksgiving dinner there).

For Fall colors late October is a great time for Cotton Hill campground. COE ha done a great job with the electrical service, lots of transformers, panels, and no voltage drop.RV sites in the Old Mill and Pine sections have sanitary. Host were great and accommodating. Lots of wind while we were there and limited time to fish. The park has slight grades and the entire loop around all three sections equals about a 1.5 mile loop great for walking or biking. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Tent Trailer.

We stayed in the PINE loop this time. Beautiful view of the lake and the grounds were in goods shape. A couple of things to beware of in this loop. Several of the sites has the sewer a foot or so above grade of the the pad. The road and several of the campsite entrances had crumbled asphalt at best; however, the pads were in good shape and fairly level. I would have given this campgrounds a 9 or 10 except for sewer and road surface. Overall this is a great place to camp which is standard for COE campgrounds. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Nice park where all campsites are on, or close to, the water. Full hookups with no problems; all sites have a concrete pad. Immaculate bathouses. Zero AT&T coverage. Nearest real services (grocery stores, etc.) are in Eufaula, AL, about 30 minutes away. All sites are listed for maximum 36 feet, but many will in fact accommodate a larger rig (we were in a 40-foot fifth-wheel and had no problems). Many campsites, however, do have a sloped approach that will make it very difficult for larger units. There are a few pull-throughs, but they are U-shaped and only suited to much smaller rigs. This park gets quite busy and can be a bit of a fish camp; it's also very nice and boasts lots of grass areas by the lake. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Great park, no problems with insects, sites were clean, roads were two lane and in good shape, camp host will mark your site as reserved provided you pay online. Cell service was a strong 3G, closest town was Georgetown about 14 miles away. No complaints, camp hosts were friendly and willing to help. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Tent Trailer.

This park is now open. This park has been out of service over one year due to upgrades in power and the added of a new sewer system. New lights have been added, bathhouses all have new paint jobs, and everything is nice here. All sites now have 30/50 amps, water, and sewer. Lots of trees to park under and some sites will be OK for Sat. dish. Most all sites are level and very close to lake. Bathhouse were clean, beach has new white sand and playground equipment for the kids. Only one washer & dryer in each bathhouse. Sites are setup in three parts, Old Mill Road, Marina View, and Pine Island. All sites are on Walter F. George Lake near the power dam and locks. Roads in park are in good shape with no pot holes. You now have a fish cleaning house to dress and clean your fish in. Verizon cell and air card work well here. You have a small market in Fort Gaines if you need more items to eat or drink. Price was on Golden Age Passport We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Motorhome.

This is one fine Corps of Engineers facility. Constant maintenance taking place--cleaning, trimming, improving, etc. We were in pull-thru site #32 which was fine for our motorhome. This is a campground where satellite reception may be difficult, particularly roof mounted systems. However, #32 was surprisingly excellent. Roads are paved and all sites have grill, fire ring and lantern pole. The restroom/shower was across the road from us and was just painted. Cell phone reception is non-existent unless you go to the Pine Hill section. Not much in Ft. Gaines with more big stores in Eufala, AL. We camped at Cotton Hill COE in a Motorhome.
