Even in a week of rain we liked this park. Hiked and biked when rain would stop for a while. Rented paddleboards and a water cycle and had a blast. Our site was one of the best ones. Many were smaller or close to others. We loved being able to see the water from our site. Many other sites didn't have water views. Some drainage issues left us with a muddy pond in our camping area, but as I said, it rained a lot. Bathrooms were very clean, but they need to adjust their toilet water devices that were installed inside the tanks. Too little water to flush properly at times. Great idea, though. This park is hilly so prepare accordingly if you want to go hiking or biking. We camped at Don Carter state park in a Travel Trailer.

The lots have a narrow paved parking area, are nice and typical state park surroundings, beautiful and if you have smaller units, I highly recommend this park. But for us, I gave this park a 6 for several reasons. GA State Parks do NOT assign lots. For most this would not be a problem, but for us in a 42 ft motor home with a full size truck in tow, there were very few lots we would fit on and none, had room for our truck except the one lot we were on. This is a new park and very busy during prime season and special holidays. We were fortunate that this one lot was available. When ask what would happen if we came back again and checked in later in the day and no lot big enough for our coach available, they said we would be out of luck. This is not acceptable business and I feel the state needs to revisit this policy. We were there in Nov. and got to the park early afternoon or we would have been out of luck right then because they told us our lot was the first one to be picked. When you arrive, disconnect your tow because roads are paved but narrow. It is the nicest State Park we have stayed in. However, we generally avoid them because most are not set up for larger units. When we called to schedule our visit, we were told there were many lots we could get into.... WRONG!!!!

Large trash can buried with charcoal inside for gray water dumping. Worked great. No problem even while doing laundry in the coach. We camped at Don Carter state park in a Motorhome.

This is a new park but there is lots of older vegetation as well as new. Mixture of back in and pull through sites. It was not crowded midweek and we have no trouble finding a nice site. Other campers are visible but well spaced. Gray water trap at each site is convenient. We had 50 amp service. Drive to the park is also very pretty. We camped at Don Carter state park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

There is a trail which runs from the campsite around the lake to the beach area. Its pretty, about 2 miles long, wooded and natural, but not strenuous, mostly flat. We saw 3 deer.

Second visit to park, ranger and hosts are extremely accommodating. Park is only 3 years old and most of the trees are young, however being close to Cleveland at an elevation of 1100.00ft. Makes for comfortable mornings and evenings. We camped at Don Carter state park in a Tent Trailer.

This a new park and it will take time for the trees to grow in. Please keep in mind that even though this is a state park the park does sit on a COE lake.
The rangers and staff were pleasant, scenery was outstanding, the upper Chattahoochee had a good flow making the kayak fishing enjoyable. Plenty of things to do and see from, Cleveland, Helen, Gainesville, and Dawsonville. Would definitely stay here again. We camped at Don Carter state park in a Tent Trailer.

Nice new state park. As stated in other reviews it will take awhile for the trees and vegetation to grow and fill in between the sites. That said there are some nice sites that face the lake and forest that give more privacy than others. You get to choose your site when you get there as you drive through the campground. All sites are paved. There are camp hosts that help keep all the facilities clean. Staff is friendly and helpful. Great beach, playground, kayak and paddle board rental, fishing and hiking to keep you busy. We camped at Don Carter state park in a Travel Trailer.

Very clean & family friendly. Nice walking area with plenty of trails. Great beach area. Nice fishing spots. Very up to date & modern playground. Nice covered pavilions near the beach & playground areas. Had a good place for the kids to play & ride their bikes. The rangers often ride through to make sure things are safe. Have stayed here several times & never had any problems. Friends of GA state parks offer a discount w/free admission to all state parks for a year and free nights stay. This park just opened this summer and we were excited to check it out. All sites are paved, no gravel, and many are pull-through. The sites are not lake front, but some are lake view. It is heavily wooded. Some of the sites I would consider "buddy sites" because they are pull-throughs with one site slightly higher on the pavement than the other, and right next to each other without much privacy. A huge plus for us was the fact that each site has a gray water "bucket' that is dug into the ground with charcoal in it (presumably to absorb smell) and you are allowed to open your gray valve and just let it drain into it. You still have to go to dump station for black water, but most campers can easily go 2 weeks or more with an on-board tank on your RV anyway. That saved me a lot of time dragging a portable tank back and forth, which I have been accustomed to with most GA state parks since most don't have gray water at each site. The park is very nice, with clean comfort stations that have drink vending machines. There is a small gift shop with overpriced items and camp supplies. 3 walking trails, the longest is 2 miles, and a short ADA paved trail that is only 300 yards long but ends with several sitting areas with swings. The beach and playground area is huge with plenty of parking and more swings. No pets on the beach, which is understandable. The beach is in a private cove area so there was little to no wake from the heavily used Lake lanier. We saw several kayakers and stand up paddleboards. Kayak rentals are coming soon according to the manager. 2 boat ramps inside the park with plenty of room to park your boat and turn around. Overall a very nice park We camped at Don Carter state park in a Travel Trailer.
