Not much shade as the last hurricane took out over 300 trees. All sites are pull through, but careful, the majority are not big enough for rigs over 30 feet. Sites are pretty sandy and be sure to bring bug repellent for gnats and horseflies. Staff is friendly, but this park needs a big hug. Quite surprising for Georgia that has among the best parks in the country. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

If you don't have a GA park pass, count on adding another $5.00 to the fee (one-time charge, but if you stay just one night, that's a hefty total of $37.00). The campground is located on an island in salt marshes south of Savannah, not too far off of I-95. Be sure to have bug spray handy for everything from flies to mosquitoes to ticks. The comfort station close to me was closed so I did not get a chance to check out the condition. It looks like laundry machines are available there, though. OTA TV signal good, Verizon signal came through, but slow. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting the Savanah area. Didn't spend a ton of time at the campground. Lots of hurricane damage that was mostly cleaned up, but some areas of the park are still closed. We got a pull through site and had plenty of room. Campground was quiet while we were there. We made a reservation, but reservations are not for a specific site. You just pick a site when you get there. Also, you cannot enter the park to check in after 10pm. We didn't know this, but we adjusted and spent the night at Cracker Barrel. The campground credited us one night on our reservation and let us check in at 9am the next morning, which I was surprised with. The policies seemed a bit odd, but didn't impact us too much. We visited the historic fort and the visitor center before we left. Was enough to spend about an hour, as there isn't too much to it, especially in the off season. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed here over Thanksgiving week. We had water and 30amp electric but no sewer. They do have a dump station. Nice campground but many many trees down in some sections from Hurricane Matthew. The good news on that was we were able to get a Satellite signal with our little tailgater Dish. Cellphone service for Verizon was very weak even with the RV antenna/booster.

No problem navigating through the campground with a 31 ft Class A. Campground is surrounded by salt marsh and water ways; and is located about half a mile from the Fort. Their is also a boat ramp located at the far end of the campground. Bathrooms are ok but only one shower. They are heated though.

Sites are fairly level and are pull throughs. Their tent sites are very nice. They have a raised bed of sand for setting your tent on so rain will not drench the bottom of your tent. Kind of like a large sandbox. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

We have stayed in a lot of state parks on this trip and this was a favorite. Nice sites and the river nearby. Two laundry facilities but the washer in one was broken and the dryer in the other. Made it work but luckily we had our bikes to go back and forth. We are in a van camper conversion. There isn't a choice of that selection here so the classification I picked of motor home isn't quite accurate. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

The ranger tour of the fort is informative and the little museum is worth your time. We also enjoyed the campfire visit hosted by the ranger. Do your grocery shopping on the way in...a little bit of a hike back to Publix.

We enjoyed this park so much. The sites were level and spacious, and park is very nicely maintained. The movie, museum, and fort were very interesting and educational. We were expecting a fort, so we were surprised by all the mounds. The rangers were very nice and helpful and some of the park hosts were friendly and waved (some did not). The bath house was old but very clean. The tent sites are very nice with the raised platform, it's the first time we have seen so many tent campers. We also took full advantage of the fishing pier for the campers, plenty of room for a lot of campers to fish. We will stay here again. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

They sell gnat spray in the office; it works for the horse flies too. The town of Richmond Hill has every kind of stores and restaurants and it's a nice little town.

This is a very well kept state park; a forested island. The sites were all pull-throughs and were very spacious and quite lovely. The utilities were well placed; 30 amp and no sewer. It may have been the time of year, but there were bugs galore which did cause us to stay inside the trailer more than I would have liked. I did walk the park roads as there are almost no hiking trails that were not swampy. The park is historical with some artifacts and a small museum on display and has a typical "south" feel to it. The park personnel were helpful and very pleasant as were the Park Hosts. Depending on the time of the year and the bugs, we would definitely come back to this park. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Porch-type swings throughout the park make for some lovely quiet time at the banks of the river. Savannah is easily available only 35-40 minutes away. The little town of Richmond Hill had everything you needed and there was a GREAT little seafood restaurant called Fish Tails just outside the park and right on the river.

This Civil War-oriented park has heavily-forested sites, mostly pull-though, with 30 amp electricity and water. Most have no sewers; the few sites with sewers are booked months in advance. Otherwise, site selection is up to the camper. Satellite TV is unavailable but OTA will pick up all networks from Savanah local stations. Verizon service was okay but no WiFi.

Programs in April, 2016, included Uniforms of the Confederacy; Civil War Surgery, Civil War Military Drilling as well as several back to the 19th Century programs such as "Coastal Native American Hunting." The camp host displays a Confederate Battle Flag at his site.

The nightly price includes a one-day park fee of $5. Non-residents over 62 get a 5% discount. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

We spent two weeks at Ft. McAllister State Park and enjoyed every day. The slips are spacious and isolated from the actual Civil War Fort. The Park is user friendly for walking, biking, and is close to Savannah, GA, for visiting the historic district. The sand gnats were terrible this Spring. We suggest bringing plenty of Off repellant and stop using shampoo and deodorant. It attracts the gnats! We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is one of the loveliest, most pleasant parks I have stayed in. I was here for three days. It is about ten miles off the freeway through the town of Richmond Hill until you get to your site. It is a bit of a drive even after you pay at the park office--but the views are gorgeous. The roads are paved though the sites are packed dirt and sand. They are pull through which was very convenient. Site was level and hookups were easy. They have a table and fire ring. The sites are very spacious with the forest being the view from the door. The park offers river and wetland views, hiking trails and biking trails. And it is very quiet--there is no noise whatsoever except for the occasional plane that flies over, or a vehicle driving in. It was nice to hike to the river and sit and listen to nothing but birds and wind. I was lucky to see dolphins in the river one evening while there. I was able to get a good wifi signal with Verizon. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

What a fantastic little park. Very private, large sites. You pick whichever site you want. Clean bathrooms, laundry, nice walking trails. Campsite # 2 is nice for great sunsets. Highly recommend this park. Although is a bit of a drive to get into Savanna, about 30 min. drive but really worth it. Also very quiet at night. We booked a couple of nights on a whim on our way home from Jekyll Island. I couldn't have been happier with this low key state park. You do have to pay a $5/day fee for any state parks in GA. We signed up on site for a "Friends of Georgia State Parks" family pass ($80) which gave us 2 free nights of camping and a year long parking pass...so it was the same price as what just camping 2 nights would've been and we get parking and 10% off for 12 months!

They have a "fort", though it's just remaining earthworks and a few other things. We felt it was too steep for not actually being a fort so we passed, since we've seen many other forts. But there is some history here so if you're a history buff you would probably enjoy it.

I've never stayed anywhere quite like this. The campground is on "Savage Island" which isn't really an island, but it feels like it as it's surrounded by a marsh. The 1/2 mile or so connecting land strip has really big beautiful views of marsh, river and birds. It was quite pretty. We did a couple of drive-thrus to find our site. The campground was very empty, probably only 15 campers in the whole park so we had our pick. We picked 46. It was a very pretty site with some good views and very private...also close to the bathrooms and dock. Site 50 was actually nicer, but further from the facilities. There are some sites on the marsh which have nice views but the campsites aren't as nice.

They have 2 bathrooms. The one closest to the docks is very old, dirty and a bit scary. But it's convenient. There is another one on the other side of the campground that is new and nice. But unless you're staying on that side of the campground it's too far away.

We rode our bikes on the trail in the campground. It's nothing special but there is a nice lookout over the river at one point.

The stars here were amazing. Head out to the middle of the connecting road and watch the sunset, the bats and see the stars. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Sites are $32 per night and park passes are $5 per stay. Motorhomes now must also purchase a park pass. Seniors get 20% off on site fee. Our senior two day stay was $61.20 for a spacious 30 amp level pull thru site with water. Overall this SP is a great place with deer walking around. Very quiet here, absolutely no road noise. There are several walking trails here as well as the Fort. TV via batwing was very good. Verizon cell and broadband were also very good. We camped at Fort McAllister State Park in a Motorhome.

Fish Tales at the marina just up the road is a good bet for a cold one and food. A new place, Melody's next to CVS on US-17, has just opened. We stopped for a drink and talked with the new owners. They are gearing the place for families and seem to be picking up a good following.

Our first time here an we were very impressed. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, and made us feel very welcome. Since our reservations were not site specific, we drove around the loops several times before choosing a very spacious pull-through. We only had 30 amp service but made it through our two-day stay with no difficulty. We did enjoy the museum and a tour of the fort (extra charge) and drove once to Ft. Pulaski, which took us about 45 minutes, through downtown Savannah. The drive into the park was gorgeous and we enjoyed our stay very much. We would definitely stay here again.
