We stayed here in our 31' Class C RV. We were on our way to North Carolina and were very disappointed in the choices of parks along I-85 going into Atlanta. (Actually if you want a chuckle from some creatively written reviews, check those out. (Look for the parks along I-85 West out of Atlanta.)

In any case, we stopped here because we didn't want to go into Atlanta to find a decent place to stay. WOW - it was incredible!!! It was our first COE (Corps of Engineers park) and we are now hooked.

The spaces were widely spread apart and you felt like you practically had the entire place to yourself. We stayed in space #29 and it was superb. It had an elevated view of the calm and lovely lake with a path going down to a tiny beach on the water. It would be great for a dog that wanted to swim in the water.

The site was heavily shaded and flat. There were a fire pit, grill, full size picnic table, and lamp pole. The people working at the entrance were so friendly. They were working on a 4-5 month contract, 4 days on, 4 days off, and had their camper on site.

The bathroom was right across the road. It was old but very clean. The only reason I'm giving this park a 9 and not a full 10 is that there was no shower in the bathroom. There were showers closer to the entrance, but were too far to easily walk to.

What started out as just a convenient stop along the way, is now a future vacation destination for our family.

FYI, on the way out, talked to the hosts. They said there were some sites with even better views. Can't remember the numbers, but they must be incredibly awesome because our site (#29) was amazing. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

Another great COE park, very easy to get to off Interstate 85. Big rigs should have no issues, might be a few sites that would be slightly difficult to get in but not many. Roads are big rig friendly, most sites are paved, sites in the first loop are all gravel but nice. Our Verizon was not the greatest in the first loop, our neighbors ATT was fine, our Verizon seemed to be fine in the other loops. Dish will for the most part be OK if yours is portable, over air TV is limited, about 10 channels. Water and 50 AMP at all sites, water pressure was great, showers are very limited. Very nice lake, great boating, beach is a short drive. Our price reflects senior discount. We would camp here again. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Rate is for $12 for one night with Golden Age Passport. But recreation.gov website requires 2 nights for a reservation, so effective discounted rate for a one-night transit stop was $24. Annoying, but still a very good buy compared to many of the alternatives.
Interior roads were wide and well maintained as were the sites that we observed. Our site (#50) as easy to negotiate drive-thru with 50-amp and water service, both easy to access. AT&T and Verizon 4G LTE service ran about 5 mhz down/.1 mhz up. Sent several texts with pictures attached with no problem. Service stations and shops in West Point, about 5 miles from this quiet campground. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Travel Trailer.

This was our 2nd visit and it lived up to our expectations. Upon arrival, we parked our RV, took the toad and checked out available sites. (If you go on line and reserve one of the reservable sites in advance, you can skip this part.) We knew roughly where we wanted to camp, but just wanted to ensure easy access to the water and that the site would accommodate the size of our rig. Then back to the gate house to register. It was Labor Day afternoon and over 90 folks had left, so we had lots to choose from. Our site was a pull through with lovely views of the lake and grassy lawn in front with plenty of shade trees. We found the connections easy to hook up and good water pressure. Over the air TV required constant adjusting, depending on the channel we wanted, but that was only in late evenings, so not a problem. It was quiet, peaceful, and very relaxing. However, we noticed a number of vacant sites where tires had been outlined in powder; this was Comet and was done to prevent ants from getting into the coach. We did have a problem with them and though not biting, they did get in some cabinets. Staff came around several times a day, checking on sites and chatting. One volunteer came back and advised me where a departing camper had left firewood. All in all, a very peaceful and relaxing time. It IS a COE site, so don't look for sewers or wifi or cable. (That's why only a 9.) But if you want to return to camping the way it was in the 60's and 70's, this is a great experience and gets you back to nature. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

It was about 45 minutes to Warm Springs and the Little White House, FDR's retreat for polio rehab. The museum and tour are well worth it as is the visit to the springs (no soaking, but excellent history of polio and the cures.) There were a couple of little places to eat along the way. Callaway Gardens in a bit closer as well.

Stayed here on an overnite heading north from FL. Some lakeside sites are a bit daunting, but we had no problem with a 27 foot towable. View was spectacular and we were 10 ft from the water. We will be returning for a few days heading north next year. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Travel Trailer.

We had a great weekend camping here. We were on site 79 and we were really close to the water. It was sandy on the shore so it was easy to walk to the water. The sites on either side of us had rocks by the shore. It was pretty warm with the afternoon sun but the sunsets were nice. Lots of people tie their boats up at the sites. We had nice trees separating the sites. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice CoE Park. I was in site number 93 which had 50 amp power as did most sites on that loop. Most of the other sites are 30 amp and heavily wooded. #93 and adjacent sites are mostly open which allows for satellite TV reception. Sites are long and not crowded together. The adjacent lake makes for nice views. Park is close enough to Interstate 85 which makes it a good choice for an "overnighter". We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

Another beautiful US Army Corp of Engineers park which we have come to search for in our travels since we have never been disappointed by them. We had a pull through site with a view of the lake. Rate reflects senior pass on a pull through site. Well shaded water/electric (50 amp) site. Cell coverage was spotty at best. Some over the air TV signals if you like. Very nice host who went out of her way to accommodate us. We would definitely return if in the area. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

One night review. I'm torn on this one. The park is beautiful, but the sites are questionable for any big rig. We were in site 116 and almost had to put our 40-footer in the culvert to get it in the spot, while off the road on the opposite side to angle it in. The roads in these loops were made when rigs were 20 feet long. And they allow people to park on the road, taking it down to a single track, and had we not gotten in before someone parked their runabout on the road, we would have never gotten around it without running off the road. They definitely need to widen the roads and angle the sites better. We were on a 30 amp site, although they do have some 50 amp service. We had no issues with the electric. We drove around and checked out the rest of the sites. Definitely different the way they lower the sites down into the side of the hill. Also, there were many low lying tree branches on many sites, again, for a not so tall unit. The area is beautiful as was the lake. We would stay here again, only if we could be assured of one of the level sites on a wider road that we could back into. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice park. Cell phone very spotty. Satellite good in very few sites. Lots of trees so you have to look at sites from 85 to 106 to get any kind of signal. Restrooms and showers were very clean and kept up nicely. Will stay here again if in the area. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

This is a fairly large USACE campground on beautiful West Point Lake. The vast majority of the campsites are on or very close to the water; there are only a few from which one can't see the lake. Most sites are water and 30 amp, but about fifty sites have water and 50 amp. Many of the sites have quite a slope to them; big rigs, forget those. Pull-thruoughs are of the U-shaped variety, and not suitable for longer rigs either. Still, there are quite a few that are easily navigated and backed into without any problems (we were here in a 40-foot RV). The park gets busy during the summer, but most sites are well separated from their neighbours. Fairly strong AT&T 3G signal, quite a few DTV channels. No hiking trails as such, but walking all the loops amounts to about 5 miles. Lagrange, GA, is about 15 minutes away and has all the services. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Rate is with the federal senior pass. Beautiful COE campground! We had one of the large 50 amp sites (site 5) right on the lake. It was perfect. Even though the lake was low, we were able to launch our kayak right from our site and paddle the beautiful lake. The park was quiet; everyone respectful of others. No walking trails but plenty of paved road area to walk. We would definitely return. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.

This was a beautiful park. We did not have trouble getting into a level site down by the lakefront. They have a little separate gravel pad for your car to park. Excellent for riding a bike around the park roads, nice shade for when it's hot. Other park facilities available to be used. Nice playground for kids. Tennis courts elsewhere in the park if I remember right. AT&T Cell phone signal was very weak, almost none at the site. Our mi-fi card worked but it was SLOW and not worth using much. We spent 3 nights in a large pull-thru (site 11). The site was level and we did have a view of the lake though we were not "on the lake". Overall condition of the park was very good. For the most part the restrooms and showers were clean. However, the urinal in the bathhouse was filthy and looked as if had not been cleaned in a long time. The rest of the bathhouse appeared to be fine. One negative is that at the dump station the road has an outward tilt to it. This makes it impossible to completely empty your tanks unless you put jacks down and raise the right side. We found the park quite restful. Weather was beautiful while we were there. Cool enough in the evenings that we could, and did, enjoy a nice fire. Fire rings with grill, stand up grill, picnic table, and lantern pole were provided at each site. We had good water pressure and a good 50 amp power connection. The extra distance to the Publix in LaGrange is worth it for shopping over what is available in West Point and Lannett. We looking foward to being able to stop over again. We camped at R Shaefer Heard COE in a Motorhome.
