This is a very convenient park, whether visiting Clarkston Wa. or Lewiston Id. It is close to Costco, which has diesel, and other shopping and restaurants. The staff is very nice and the hooks very well placed. There is grass at each sight. We have stayed here before and will return. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $38.00
Overall Rating:

Hells Gate State Park and campground is a huge green oasis on the banks of the Snake River, just 4 miles south of downtown Lewiston, ID, and across the river from Clarkston, WA. Campsites have plenty of shade from the often-intense summer sun. Our site was a back-in, 55' deep site, with level, blacktop parking pad. Site at least 60' wide. E/W service provided, but no sewer hook-up. Tall trees for shade. Grassy site with plenty of room for a picnic or for kids to play. Paved bike path runs behind the site. Nice Snake River view to the rear. Campfire ring and picnic table provided. Verizon cell service 2 bars. Tall shade trees in many sites block southern shy views for satellite hook-up. Pros: Scenic location on the banks of the Snake River. Spacious sites. Attentive park staff. Well-maintained restroom and shower facilities. First-class state park visitor center. Access to on-site boat landing. Several nature trails to explore. Paved, 4-mile, bike path runs from CG, along the Snake River levee, to downtown Lewiston. Cons: Crowded CG most weekends from late May thru August. Expect day-long, high-pitched, engine noise from locals racing up and down the Snake River in high-powered watercraft. Recommendation: Great family-oriented state park and campground. Stay overnight or for several days, but, try to avoid weekend crowds. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The state park is very nice - lots of shade trees and grass. The RV area was very quiet - all sites spaces well apart. All of the employees were very helpful and knowledgeable at the Discovery Center. Bicycle trails weave throughout the park. We would definitely stay here again. Plan at least a few days to see attractions in the area. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a really nice park with lots of trees and plenty of half moon pull through. The sites are far apart and the roads are easy to maneuver for big rigs. Even saw deer walk through the loops two nights. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The walk to the basalt columns was worthwhile. I had thought we could drive up to see the canyon, but you need to take a half or full day boat trip for that. We did drive as far as we could on Hwy 129 along the river, and that was pretty.

Very nice location on the Snake River. Lots of shade in sites, needed it because it was in the high 90's low 100's. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bathroom and shower was cleaned daily. Close to town if you need supplies. You can visit museums or take a boat trip up the canyon, or just go swiming at the beach. We had electricity and water but no sewer....my fault. Worth a visit. Great spaces in the A Loop. Lots of space and restrooms were conveniently located. Older foliage provides lots of shade in most sites.

Rate shown includes both tax and $5/day car admittance fee, as it is a state park. For Idaho residents, you can deduct this cost if you have an annual pass to your parks. We should always show/share all taxes and fees to get an accurate picture of costs for visitors. We track the actual cost per night of each stay. As such, this park jumped into the top 15% costliest stay. The park is nice, great power, very well shaded, and reasonably quiet. Deer roamed the park Site was reasonably level although I did raise my front wheels on blocks and the jack logs, treated wood, were filled with earwigs when we prepared to leave. The trails are nice, a visitor center for the Lewis and Clark expedition is nearby, and you have convenient access to major stores in either Lewiston or Clarkston. The Verizon data signal was excellent - had some phone issues (on both phones) on one day only. We would stay here again. Be sure to look at the actual campground map as the Reserve America map site angles are not exactly representative - we try to get an east west site to reduce solar gain, and the actual park map is more representative. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Motorhome.

Jet boat ride up the Snake River into Hells Canyon was a fun day trip. Be sure to look at the Lewis and Clark "mural" etched into the concrete at the dock, tracking the story of their expedition from the Louisiana Purchase until their return.

This is a lovely park with large mature shade trees next to the Snake River. Sites were well separated with lots of grass. The grass needs lots of irrigation so be careful of what you leave outside. The staff was polite and asked us if it was ok to run the sprinklers next to the trailer. The temperatures were near 100 when we were there, but it was ok sitting under the trees, something I found amazing. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Very park-like, i.e. grassy areas with trees, but not forested. Many sites well shaded; some back up to Snake River. Campground host for each loop. A variety of hookup choices available. We were there during the week and the campground was probably 1/2 full, or a little more, the entire time. Boaters & bicyclists will enjoy this park, which is long & narrow on the riverbank. Quiet at night, as it's not on a major road, but there is road noise during the day from across the river in Clarkston, Washington, and there is noise from motorboats of all sizes on the river. Nice visitors center in the park dedicated to the Lewis & Clark expedition. We would definitely stay again when in this area. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

No place to note this on the form; our site was paved (asphalt). Shopping in Lewiston & Clarkston (across the river) includes chains, big box stores and tourist-boutiques; fast food and restaurants available in the area too.

Great burgers at Rooster's Landing bar-grill on Port Way in Clarkston; open for lunch as well as dinner.

Overall Rating:

An attractive Idaho State Park with many mature trees and shaded campsites. Loops Alder and Birch (A&B) have W&E sites, while the Cottonwood (“C”) loop has “no service” (i.e. tent) sites. There is a nice, paved, walking/bicycling path running along the Salmon River. All camp facilities were clean and well tended. (Even the gravel area where we parked had been raked smooth prior to our arrival.) Camps sites are fairly level. There are some “big rig” sites, but most sites are probably more easily entered with a rig under 30 feet. Restrooms and showers were clean — and otherwise typical of the facilities seen in Washington or Oregon parks. No tokens or quarters were required, though for continued water, a button needed pushing every 45 to 60 seconds. No WiFi. Verizon signal was 3 bars. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped here on the first day of the Memorial Day weekend. My husband, who can be old and cranky about kids, was worried about the number of children that would be in the park for the holiday weekend. There were certainly children there, but they were extraordinarily well behaved. They can ride their bikes forever in a circular paths of the park. There are three loops, the first two dedicated to RVs and the third set up for tenting. We actually camped in the third loop because the other two were full, but we had a very nice pull through site and there were lots of other RVs in this loop as well as tents, just no hook ups. Our site had a nice view of the river. The sites are spaced perfectly from one another. Lots of trees and a gorgeous walking/biking path along the edge of the river. There is also a great swim beach and for us, a place to throw the toy in the water for our lab. The park is spotless and well groomed. The setting is spectacular. It was really hot the day we went, but the canopy of trees made is cool and welcoming. My only complaint is the front desk is quite up tight. We arrived at 1 PM and official check in time is 2 PM. Our site was empty but they would not let us go down there without signing a waiver about sprinklers damaging our trailer. I wondered, what about the trailers of the people that are already in there? And I mean they were strict about it! We waited in the parking lot with lots of other people whose sites were also empty. It just seemed a little ridiculous to me. Maybe they've had trouble in the past but it seemed overly cautious and regulatory to me. But would I stay here again? OMG, in a heartbeat! We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is a beautiful park! We were only there for one night, and decided not to stay longer because we had to be on our way and also because it was so hot. The sites are huge, spread out, very grassy, with a lot of big shade trees, and the Lewis and Clark center was fascinating. The rangers were pleasant and friendly and obviously enjoyed their jobs. We camped at Hells Gate State Park in a Motorhome.
