Beautiful campground on huge lake. Many sites right on or across road from lake. Great value at $18/night for electric. There are a handful of full hookup sites also. Most sites pretty level and fairly to very spacious. Most are asphalt, some gravel. Most have some shade, although some along lake-front are pretty sunny. Two-way road through campground easy to navigate. Over-the-air TV and Verizon signals strong. Laundry machines in main bathhouse. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Motorhome.

Remote but beautiful COE park. Our electric only back in site was fully paved and shaded with a pond view behind. We were on a loop on the opposite side of the road from the main campground. Bathroom was dirty which was curious considering there were only three campers on the loop. The roads are easily navigable but the trees hung very low and brushed our roof all the way through the loop so go slow if your camper is tall. Could not get a WiFi signal. Verizon signal was good. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Motorhome.

Dam West has some of the cleanest bathrooms and camp sites. Love how they come every Tuesday and Friday to clean out your fire pit. Their laundry facility is great and only cost $1 for a wash. The only thing I can complain about is that the hostess can be extremely rude at times. I understand they want everything to go smoothly but in some cases the attitude makes us not want to continue our stay. It is shocking to us that we can talk to the hostess when they drive by, but they can't remember who we are when we come into the campground. Sometimes so rude to us if our tag isn't on our mirror. Well my vehicle mirror is so thick that it does fit around it. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Travel Trailer.

What an amazing park! Clean and well maintained, sites are generally quite level. Campground roads are smooth and level, easy to walk or bike. Shower houses are cleaned surprisingly often by contracted service and in our experience always nicely clean. Was surprised that there were only 2 shower houses but campground was at full capacity while we were there and we never waited for a shower nor did we ever see anyone else doing so. There's also a centrally located restrooms-only building. Campground has a variety of site options and honestly there's not a bad site to be had. I believe most every area has some reservable as well as non-reservable sites. (Note: this is an extremely popular park, reservation sites are strongly suggested.) Several waterfront sites with stunning views but because of the size of Carlyle Lake (largest lake in IL) the breeze coming off the lake can be really strong at times. Some avoid these sites because it can hamper your ability to have a campfire. Water view sites across the road have great views. Some of the sites back up to a wooded area that edges on lake and I'm sure these would have some excellent wildlife viewing potential. So pretty much every area of the park has its own unique attributes! Previous mixed reviews on staff friendliness is understandable - my favorite gatehouse fellow is warm and personable and a great source of info. The other couple are less easy-going with a definite lean towards an authoritative air. I think you just have to get on their good side and then you're fine! High on my favorites list is the convenience of this campground to anything you could need. Shopping, dining and church are nearby and easy to get to. The only drawbacks I could note is that the temp of showers is pretty unpredictable and can go from warm to very hot with no notice. (OK for adults but for kids ???) Internet service was nonexistent on our site (attendant told us waterfront sites don't pick up). Neither was big deal for us. LOVE this campground! We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Fish House Restaurant is a great place to eat nearby. We carried out from Wheelans BBQ shack also very good. But our fave if you want to drive 10-15 min is Crossroads Restaurant in nearby Keyesport. Not a fancy atmosphere but the best fried chicken EVER!!!

Friendly hosts. Sites had good space between. Sites had good drainage and level, most appeared big rig friendly. Some extra long sites available. The bathhouses all appeared to be easy walking distance. Visited one and it was clean and air conditioned, but shower could have used a curtain to separate water spray from clothes and towel. On site laundry. Level park roads good for bicycling and park may be subject to flooding (call ahead) as it is on a large lake. A marina is on the park, and has a boat launch (day fee). We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Travel Trailer.

Clean well kept grounds, widely spaced sites with many large trees and grass. Long back-ins to graveled mostly level site pads with 50/30/15 amps, but no water. Well designed dump at cg entrance and separate potable water access. Pleasant host at entry office. Bath house with individual rooms with toilet, sink, and shower with hot water. About 1/3 of sites have lake water/beach view/access. CG roads good tarmac. A graveled path leads to near by marina. A beautiful CG and thanks to the Corp of Engineers. Most all sites are partial shade.

Shower house very clean, hats off to the cleaning service.

Laundry room very clean washer and dryer $1.00/load

Wifi is ok but inconsistent at times. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Super Walmart approx 2 mile from campground.

LuBar and Bistro is a nice little lunch spot. Maybe a nice night spot for a drink. We were only there for lunch. Their motto is "stop in for a bite to eat stay for a drink". Also had really nice looking selection of hand made gelato.

This is a beautifully maintained campground. It has pull throughs large enough for my 40ft 5th wheel to remain hooked to my truck, and back-ins long enough for two RV's as well as side by side with lots of room to spare. 50 & 30amp electric service at site with water and sewer at dump station. Wonderful staff at check-in. Lake access for boating and fishing. Only spent one night this time but hope to pass this way again for a longer stay. Excellent!

Arrival: Roads are wide, paved, clearly marked and easily traversed. About 1 mile of US 50 and 2 miles from the smallish town of Carlyle, IL. Dump station and water are at the front entrance. Since there is no water on the basic sites, be sure to fill your water tank before pulling into the campground.

Sites: About half of the sites are paved, otherwise gravel. They all have plenty of room and most are reserve-able online at recreation.gov

Restrooms: Generally clean. Three locations throughout the park. Showers at the front have laundry facilities and open scheme for showers. Restroom in the middle has 6 individual rooms with toilet, sink and shower. Timed water with low shower heads tight to the wall.

Cost: $18 for electric and $26 for full-hookups. 1/2 price for Access Pass holders.

Local Area: Carlyle, IL is not a big town. There are basic services and a few fast food restaurants. Alternatives are between 20 and 60 miles away.

Internet: Wi-Fi in the park -- free and open. Cell signals are temperamental.

Other: One of our favorites. Friendly staff, easy access, Walmart within walking distance. Fishing is OK and lake-front sites are available.. some can be reserved. GPS routing is good from all approaches. A very secure location with periodic Sheriff patrols. Some mosquitoes and gnats, but generally pleasant... except for the biting flies... they like to go back for seconds. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed in site #49 which was right on the water. Spectacular view of the lake. Literally just steps from the water. My husband caught lots of fish, so he was happy. Sites are a little close together, but not bad. We had an electric site, so had to get water, but not a problem. Bathrooms could have been a little cleaner, but are old, so maybe not the easiest to maintain. Had to go outside the park to buy firewood, but it was reasonable where we bought it. We would definitely stay again and plan to next year. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Travel Trailer.

Nice campground, excellent value. I had a 50% discount on a full hookup site. I was there during mowing week, so it was noisy all the time but the park is very pretty and has lots of trees. There are miles and miles of bike/walking paths. There's wifi throughout the park, and it works well except during peak periods. The customer service was great. There is a restaurant on the edge of the park, and a Walmart about a mile away. The water is heavily laced with chlorine, and not very good to drink. The sites are a little close together, but very level and spacious. We camped at Dam West Recreation Area COE in a Travel Trailer.
