There are already lots of good reviews but wanted to do ours. We really enjoyed this campground. It is clean, quiet, very well-maintained. There are a lot of good sites and some not quite as good for a motorhome (too much slope), but all sites are paved. Water is available, but this is one of the knocks in that there are shared sources for up to six users at once, and even with 75 feet of hose, we couldn't reach. No sewer (so the second knock) but there are dump station. Location is very convenient to stores and restaurants and there is a train line to Chicago only a few miles away. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Motorhome.

We love this park. We are originally from Elgin & return here each year to visit friends. Satellite signal is easy to get & Chicago has plenty of over the air stations available. Lots of grass for the dogs & plenty of places to walk them. Lots of shopping & restaurants in the area. We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Motorhome.

Beautiful park, paved sites. Some sites will need extra hoses for water hookup. No showers available, sewer hookups, or honey wagon service. Does have dump station. Showers and service that could come to site and pump out black and grey tanks would be a great improvement to the campground s. It would make it more enjoyable for campers that plan a longer stay. We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Motorhome.

Very clean. Roads are paved and very easy to navigate. Large grassy areas between camp sites. Water is in center of some areas you will need extra hose. Lot was near level, back in. Only 4 pull thrus. 89 first come sites. Elgin offers excellent restaurants, easy access to train to go into Chicago. Dog friendly. Nicely mowed walking trails. We stay at this campground every year. Elgin is our hometown & this campground is very convenient for visiting friends & family. Lots of shopping & restaurants nearby. The sites are large, some with shade, some open with lots of grass. It is 50 amp with water. No problem getting satellite & more than a dozen stations over the air with a digital antenna. No sewer but two dump stations are available. No showers but there are restrooms. No reservations, first come, first serve. It is quiet. There are trails to walk. We love it here. We stayed 3 nights in a back in with 50 amps. There is no cable, but we got 22 stations on our over-the-air antenna. Satellite reception in the newer section would be good, due to smaller trees. Some of the site water hookups are far, so have a long hose with a water filter if needed. The water hookups are shared by two campers. Site 83 was in the newer section, where the trees are not as mature as the older section, so sunny. There is a dump station. The park staff are very nice and helpful people. The grounds and restrooms are nice and clean. It is a first come first serve park; no reservations. The roads are well maintained, and you park your rv on asphalt. Grass is around your camp site, with a picnic table and fire pit. You cannot bring in firewood, and they sell firewood at a reasonable price. We rested here, as it is quiet. We camped here to be close to Big Timber Station to take the METRA train to Union Station in Chicago. It rained while we were there, and a lot of water accumulated in the grass, but did not come on to the asphalt pad for our 5th wheel and truck. Our site was level, but a few sites are unlevel. The earlier you enter the campground in the day, the better choice of camp sites. We liked this campground, and we would definitely return if in the area in the future! We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

There are several restaurants/fast food, and a laundromat close by off Big Timber Road. Our favorite was Jesters, where we had a delicious steak and chicken pita sandwiches. The locals love this restaurant for their sandwiches. A water taxi is right next to Union Station to take you to the Navy Pier and return you. We had great burgers at DNK? Burgers at the Navy Pier. Take the Architecture Boat Tour..awesome! Mellenium Park is very nice too!

Take the train to Chicago. Big Timber station is only 5 minutes from the campground, and is only open Monday through Friday. On Saturday and Sunday, you can take the METRA from Elgin. Riding the train was the best option for us to visit Chicago. You buy your tickets from the train staff on the train at $8. Parking lot tickets are $1.50 for the entire day for your auto. When you get to Union Station, buy your return ticket. If you don't, and you have to buy it from the train staff on the train on your return to Big Timber or Elgin, they will charge you another $5 per person.

This park is a first come, first serve kind of park. Pull in, find a spot to your liking, go pay. No reservations are taken. We were in a pull-through in what seems to be a newer part of this park, and while it was asphalt, wasn't dead level, which seems to be the case with most of the spots here. Not a big deal. Power and water only, with 2 spots you can dump. 1 in the camping area, 1 just outside. Place was clean and well maintained. Firewood 5$ a bundle, and they deliver. The trees in this part were still fairly new, so majority of spots in this section were full sun. When they mature, this will be a must-stop location. It was windier than a mug when we were there. Also, there seemed to be a lot of ticks floatin' around, so be aware. Overall, really liked this park. Quiet, close to the Big City, great for star gazing! Will stay there again. We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Motorhome.

We love staying at this campground. It is the only one in the area. We visit friends & relatives while here. It is convenient to a multitude of restaurants & shopping of all kinds. The sites are spacious, hook ups well situated, it is quiet & the people are friendly, & satellite signal & over the air antenna signal are easy to get. The drawbacks are there is no sewer hook up but there are two dump stations. There are no reservations & you can only stay two weeks. Nice state campground. Well kept, lots of grass. We were in site 60. Pull through and level, sat friendly. Sites are spacious, but watch the slope on some of them, as it can be more than you think. This is a first come first served campground. We were here twice this month during the week and there were plenty of spaces. On the weekend there were still a few, but ones that had the more severe slopes. Most sites are back in, but very easy. Most sat. friendly sites are to the rear of the campground. Verizon signal very good. No wifi here. When choosing a site, note the water connection. Most are shared with twin nozzles, on some site the water connection can be quite a distance from the site. Electric is well placed on all sites 50/30 amp. No sewer, dump on the way in or out. Tenters can set up in any of the sites. Plenty of walking trails around the campground. We never did hear a train. Also the water has a lot of iron in it, so it is wise to pick up a blue filter at walmart to even if you have an on board filter, or fill your tank with good water before camping. We used bottled water for drinking. There is a 2 week max. stay. We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: May, 2016 - $25.00
Overall Rating:

Stayed here in May 2016 at the beginning of the camping season. It's a nice little RV campground right where you wouldn't expect one. The people from Kane Country running the campground are very, very nice. The campground is in the middle of a forest preserve, although most of the camp sites are asphalt slabs with no trees around them. None of the sites have sewer hook-up but there are two dump stations, and they are free to use if you're a registered camper. The sites did have 50amp and 30amp service, along with a water hook-up. The price for camping is cheap- $25 if you're a Kane County, IL, non-resident, $15 if you are.

There are several walking trails in the preserve. The big one is gravel and about 2.5 miles around the loop. We saw deer, otters, and hawks while walking the trail, which took about an hour. There are some smaller walking trails that meander through the prairies and woods.

I'd highly recommend coming, but if you have kids just understand that this isn't a KOA. There's no pool, no activities, or anything like that. It's just a place to hook up your RV and enjoy the preserve.

Although I gave value, service, and cleanliness 5 stars, I gave the campground an overall rating of 8 stars only because outside of the walking trails, there wasn't much to do, and the RV sites were sort of close together with no trees to screen you from your neighbors. Also, the fishing pond was pretty weed infested and we didn't see or catch any fish. We camped at Burnidge Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you can, get a site on the west side of the RV park along the prairie. The camp sites along the east side of the RV park run along railroad tracks. There is probably 50 feet of trees between you and the passing trains, but when a train does come by you'll definitely hear it. We were here for 24 hours on a weekend and only had one freight train go by around 9PM at night.

Loved the park. Wide open, lots of space between the sites and asphalt pads. Work campers very friendly. GC very neat and clean. Only complaint is the water. It is full of iron and very metallic tasting. We recommend you have a very good filter for your water or fill your water tank before you go and don't use their water. We love this park. The sites are large & level-all asphalted. It is quiet & peaceful here. Satellite & over the air signal are easy to get. It is about the only campground in the area. The closest other campground is about 30 miles from Elgin. We lived in the Elgin area for 50 years & staying here makes it easy to visit friends & family. There are two drawbacks. There is no sewer hook up so we have to move to dump when our tanks are full. Your stay is limited to 14 days in a 21 day period. We stay here every summer.
