Very nice campground but a little neglected. Could be very good if the state would put a little more money into upkeep. Pros: Beautiful setting, lots of mature trees, most sites are well shaded. Bathrooms are clean but aging. Host was very helpful and friendly. Cons: Most sites are not level. No water available at sites (though available for fill-up nearby). Cell signal is fair to poor (with T-Mobile). Overall a nice campground, just could be even better. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The scenic drive alone the river south of Grafton is very nice with views of the river and several neat little towns to visit.

Overall Rating:

I have stayed here years before this recent encounter. The campground and facilities are in a word "tired." While the restroom and showers are serviceable they are very outdated. The showers were almost clean but not quite. The high point in the showers seems to be the drains in the mens shower/bathroom. The water simply ran away from the drain. The campsites are all gravel and the biggest sites that will accommodate 40' rigs were not all level. Reserve America has taken over the registration and reservation system for this park and it is not as accurate as it should be. Make sure that you read the length of the RV Pad itself not the overall length including from front to back. I had mistakingly reserved site 22 which lists the overall length of the site as 47' but if you read closely you will see that the useable length is 25'. We also found that there are many power pedestals that have electrical difficulties and they cannot be fixed. So, at least at this time there are many unserviceable sites. 50 amp is only at certain sites. Water spigots are dispersed through out the facility but you will need at least 100' of hose if you plan to reach them without moving your RV. There is a dumpsite as well. So, if your grey/effluent volume is expected to be more than your lengths stay be sure to bring a portable wast tank to take to the sewage dump. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. My overall rating would have been higher if the shower/bathroom facility was up to my expectations. On a scale of 1-10 I would give the park a six. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Make sure you go to nearby Grafton for a wonderful meal or a simple catfish sandwich. There are four wineries in the area. For an evening with drinks go "The Landing." The Landing is a historic boat yard that once services paddlewheelers plying the river and during WWII PT boats were built there. The entire venue overlooks the beautiful Illinois River.

Nice forested campground on the banks of the Illinois River before it joins with the Mississippi. Easy to find with the entrance just off the Great River Road. Gorgeous views of the river either way you travel -- from the north or the south. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Would've loved to look around Grafton as it looked interesting. Unfortunately had to keep moving as had to be in Kansas later that day.

Grassy, pleasant park. Sites are open with no privacy, but well-spaced and mostly shaded. Many sites slope or are uneven. No water at sites, but spigots scattered throughout the campground. 29 reservable sites (2 for disabled), 60 sites first come, first served. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Beautiful park and just an amazing lodge! The bike trails were very nice and stretched along the Mississippi River. It was a pull thru site and hanging out near the camper wasn't as nice as hanging out near the lodge. There was a dump tank near the camper, which was convenient to use. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Not so much the fault of the campground, but shop before you arrive. The nearby town of Grafton is a lot of fun, but does not have a grocery store. The nearest town to food shop was Alton, which is a considerable distance from Pere Marquette. Other than that, this is just an amazingly beautiful park, you will be amazed at some of the beautiful views. Also there is a few great wineries in nearby Grafton.

Located across the street from the Illinois River, this is a lovely park that offers great views of the barge activity. It also has a Visitors Center and Lodge. The lodge was built by the CCC and in the great tradition of these lodges worth visiting. The restaurant in the lodge is adequate but there are better choices in the town of Grafton. The lodge also has a wine tasting which was fun. The CG is very clean however many of the sites are out in the open - a consideration in summer, and not very level. Our site had a tree offering some shade and electric. Water and a Dump Station is available. Camp Hosts were most helpful and appreciated their advice during some inclement weather. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Great state park; spacious sites, grass, trees, quiet and relaxing!

30 & 50 amp sites, gravel, but no water hookups; you will need to fill your tank at one of several community spigots, and then dump at the dump station. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a great state park. VERY family orientated. Nearby CCC constructed Lodge offers bar and restaurant services. Campground is adjacent to the Great River Road bike path. Close to Grafton wineries & tourist activities and ferry to Calhoun County, IL - go for lunch. Park also offers hiking trails, horseback riding in season and marina on IL river. Half of sites may be reserved, other half first come, first served. But, if you want a weekend site, get there by early afternoon on Friday or you're out of luck. Go and enjoy the experience. We camped there at the peak of Fall colors right before Halloween. Most sites are gravel with ample room for slides. Within walking distance to the Illinois River, and close to Grafton, IL. Plenty of things to do close by, or travel down, the River Road along the Mississippi River to Alton, IL. The only issue was the green firewood we purchased there. It was way too green to light easily, but other campers helped us by donating some of their seasoned sticks. We'll stay there again and do more sightseeing north. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Sites 2-30 are reservable,, the rest are first come, first serve. There are also two rustic cabins. This park is our favorite short-drive getaway (we live in St. Louis area) no water or sewer but there is a dump station. The campground is wooded and lots of shade. Not a lot of cell service with Sprint, no wifi. Most of the first come sites are very spacious and not too close to neighbors. A few of the sites that back up to the old cemetery are not level at all, the rest are fine. Each site has 20, 30, or 50 amp. Each bathroom has stall toilets and showers. The showers can be kind of nasty, depending on usage and who is cleaning them, otherwise they are just ok. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This was our first visit back in 20+ years. The trees that were planted in the campground are now mature and provide a pleasant shady canopy. Around 30 sites are reservable and the remaining 50 are first come, first served. Some of these are sunny, which would be good off season, or if you need satellite reception. This is a popular park, and while we stayed Tuesday and Wednesday nights without a reservation, by checkout on Thursday it was starting to fill. The park is Illinois' largest, at 8000 acres. The lodge, cabins, and restaurant were built by the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in the 1930s and is known for it's fried chicken dinners. We went for breakfast, had a great omelette and enjoyed watching all the hummingbirds! The hiking was great, several trails to overlooks of the oxbow lakes and the Illinois River. The park also has a boat ramp and slips on the river. Maybe next time we'll take our kayaks, as there wasn't too much current in the river. We took our bikes so we could use the bike trail and ride to Grafton, about 6 miles each way. Grafton is neat with lots of waterfront restaurants. There was also horseback riding available in the park. If you go, consider riding one of the ferries from Missouri. We rode over on the Golden Eagle Ferry (Missouri to Calhoun County, IL across the Mississippi--toll) and the Brussels Ferry (across the IL river, free!). Going home we rode the longer Grafton Ferry (across the confluence of the Mississippi and IL rivers- also a toll). It cuts the driving time down to St. Louis and is fun!! We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

We found this to be a very nice park. The interior roads are paved and the sites are gravel. Lots of space between the sites and many are shaded. Most sites are level. The lodge has a great restaurant and that is a short walk thru the park. The lodge is where you must go to use the Wi-Fi. Restrooms and showers were just OK. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Great very scenic state park with spacious campsites although there are a few not level. No hookups except for electric, but water is available and there is a dump station. The park has great hiking trails and views of the Illinois and Mississippi rivers. The park's lodge has a good dining room that serves some of the best fried chicken prepared anywhere. The restrooms are clean but have the aggravating push button showers. It is also a great park for site seeing. St Louis is about a 40 minute scenic drive away, even shorter if you use the ferry. We will return and stay here again. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.

Electric only sites, but most are big and shaded. Big, beautiful lodge on property with a dine-in restaurant and winery. Lots of hiking trails with beautiful bluff views. Campground is flat, great for small kids riding their bikes. If coming from the west, consider riding the ferry over for a fun experience. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Date of Stay: November, 2010 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

Pere Marquette is a very large state park with miles of hiking trails. Located at the point where the Illinois River joins the Mississippi, the park also has a lodge (open all year) with rooms, cabins and a restaurant. While Wi-Fi service is not available in the campground area, campers are welcome to use the facilities in the lodge which offers good free Wi-Fi service. There is minimal cell service available in the park. One must go looking for a spot where a signal is available. Staff members can assist you in locating such sites. The park can serve as a base for exploration of the St Louis area, although it is a long drive to the nearest river bridge in Alton, IL. Alternately, there are several ferries within a few miles that eliminate the long drive. The fare for a round-trip was $15. Sites in the campground are well spaced and laid out in an interesting manner. Looping drives avoid the typical rows of parallel sites. While all pads have power, water is available at only a few central locations which are set far away from individual sites. There are no sewer hookups at individual sites, but a dump station is available on the premises. Sites 2 to 30 are reservable, while numbers 31 to 80 are available on a first come, first served basis. We camped at Pere Marquette State Park in a Motorhome.
