3 Parks near Makanda, Illinois
May 2010 - $12.00
This use to be a great campground: everything but 8 tent sites have been removed. The 8 sites are not level either. It is too bad, I loved this place. - User1224

This is a beautiful state park in the hills of Southern Illinois.
We stayed here for one week in late April and it was busy on the weekends but pretty empty during the week. Large campsites with lots of tall trees, fire pits and picnic tables. The only drawback is no water or sewer at each site, but there is 30 & 50 amp. at several sites and potable water near the dump station and hydrants around the park so you can fill your water tank when you get there and dump when you leave. The restrooms and showers were very clean and the staff was super nice!
There are several nice hiking trails within the park - from easy to challenging, and good roads for bicycling.
The park's horseback riding stable is just at the entrance of the road. We took a very nice 1hour guided trail ride. The beautiful lodge is 2 miles farther inside the park. The visitor's center (near the lodge) has great exhibits and 2 short documentary films on the CCC and how they built the park.
You are in the heart of the So. IL Wine Trail and the visitors' center has maps for a driving tour! Little Grassy Lake is great for fishing, very nearby. - Jeni

Have stayed here before. Most sites have electricity only so fill your tanks upon arrival. Giant City Lodge is worth visiting with good food and wonderful architecture built during CCC years. Good area to hike or fish at nearby Little Grassy Lake. 10HP limit. Watch for deer when travelling here after dark. One of the largest populations in the country. - gfarmcafe

We stayed one night, campground about 10 miles from I-55. Lots of shaded sites, with some big enough for 40' RVs. Bathrooms were clean and showers hot. Sites were marked well and 10 had 50 amp! Lots of things to do in the area, hiking, fishing, site seeing ! They have 25 first come first served sites also! Great area to relax, very quiet and not any road noise. - LaMonte

We were looking for a full hookup site near Carbondale and we found this park was the only one nearby. (9 miles) We got one of the 3 full hookup sites at this park. The hookups were a challenge as the water and electric were 15' on the right and the sewer connection ended up under the motorhome 20' of hose was needed. The park personnel were nice and accomodating. We had a wonderful view of the lake and plenty to watch with a fishing tournament going on. Our site was level but we noticed a few sites were not so be prepared. - dreamer51

Very good campground and marina. Rented fishing boat and fished with my younger brother, which we haven't done in almost 50 years. The lake limits motors to 9.9 HP, and has good fishing most of the time. Also has pontoon boats, which I recommend for us older, heavier fishermen. Boats had small benches, but rental seats are available, which we should have gotten. Park is easy to get around in. - gfarmcafe

As others have stated before, you need a VERY long cord to reach most electric boxes. We had to move sites because our cord didn't reach. They do have boat rentals and a small beach. Sites are not that level. - har-fl
