We enjoyed our stay. Our site was level side-to-side, just had to play around to level front-to-back. Park is quiet in a nice area. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Like others have noted, go to the lodge for the chicken. Nice hiking in the park. Makanda is pretty cool, and lots of wineries in the area. Groceries about 10 miles away.

Overall Rating:

Stayed 5 nights. The campground was very quiet. We loved the campground host, she would stop by couple times a day to check on us. By the end of our stay I felt like I was saying goodbye to a family member. Campsite and grounds were very clean always saw staff working. Had enough room for our rv a truck and screen tent. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Visited bald knob cross, the tiny town of Makanda, Owl's Creek winery all within a short distance. The hiking trails are beautiful along with drives thru the park. Amazing scenery!

Overall Rating:

Very average campground. Not up to par with how much I love Giant City State Park. Facilities are do for an upgrade. No rangers any where to be seen. I stayed on a busy Memorial Day weekend. Fellow campers did not adhere to the quiet time rules. Why is loud music at a campground even a thing? We had country music on the left and rock on the right. We camp to hear nature. Anyway, I love this state park and the lodge cabins look very well cared for so our return will have to be there. The lodge and restaurant is excellent and well managed. The firewood isn't at the campground but at the horse stables, which also look well managed, but that is up the street. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Makanda has some neat local craftsman shops. The Bald Knob Cross is visible from the water tower lookout. It is 10 miles away but 15 drive miles. It is worth a visit.

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful state park in the hills of Southern Illinois.
We stayed here for one week in late April and it was busy on the weekends but pretty empty during the week. Large campsites with lots of tall trees, fire pits and picnic tables. The only drawback is no water or sewer at each site, but there is 30 & 50 amp. at several sites and potable water near the dump station and hydrants around the park so you can fill your water tank when you get there and dump when you leave. The restrooms and showers were very clean and the staff was super nice!
There are several nice hiking trails within the park - from easy to challenging, and good roads for bicycling.
The park's horseback riding stable is just at the entrance of the road. We took a very nice 1hour guided trail ride. The beautiful lodge is 2 miles farther inside the park. The visitor's center (near the lodge) has great exhibits and 2 short documentary films on the CCC and how they built the park.
You are in the heart of the So. IL Wine Trail and the visitors' center has maps for a driving tour! Little Grassy Lake is great for fishing, very nearby. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

The family style fried chicken dinner is a MUST at the Giant City Lodge. Take a leisurely horseback ride or get in your car (or catch a bus from Carbondale) and enjoy the beautiful countryside and vineyards on the Wine Trail!

Have stayed here before. Most sites have electricity only so fill your tanks upon arrival. Giant City Lodge is worth visiting with good food and wonderful architecture built during CCC years. Good area to hike or fish at nearby Little Grassy Lake. 10HP limit. Watch for deer when travelling here after dark. One of the largest populations in the country. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed one night, campground about 10 miles from I-55. Lots of shaded sites, with some big enough for 40' RVs. Bathrooms were clean and showers hot. Sites were marked well and 10 had 50 amp! Lots of things to do in the area, hiking, fishing, site seeing ! They have 25 first come first served sites also! Great area to relax, very quiet and not any road noise. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: April, 2013 - $20.00
Overall Rating:

We enjoyed our midweek stay at Giant City State Park. The grounds were clean and well kept, and the restrooms and showers were also nice. As it was April, and somewhat rainy, there were only about 4 other rigs there, so we didn't need a reservation and we could choose our own site. There was no host there, but a very friendly ranger stopped by between 5 and 6 to collect our money. There is no screening between sites, but they are all shady. If you want more privacy, get one on the edge of the campground that backs to the woods. In addition to the 85 RV sites there were maybe 12 walk in tent sites. There was one restroom building for the campground, but 2 other "vault toilets". There are water spigots in several locations. The park has very good hiking, and the campground is the trail head for the 12 mile long Red Cedar Trail. This trail also connects with a 12 mile long horse trail that can be hiked. In general, there are lots of trails out there, and a short one leads from site 20 to a fishing pond. Also, just down the campground road is a launching ramp to the Little Grassy Lake, part of the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. We will definitely come back and bring our kayaks. No review would be complete without mentioning the CCC built lodge in the park that serves a dynamite family style fried chicken dinner. (The lodge is not close to the campground,-- about 2 miles.) $20 was for an RV site, tent sites were cheaper, and there may be a discount for Illinois residents. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

I have been camping here for the past 4 years mostly at the tent sites. Giant city is only 20 miles from where I live and my kids love hiking here. The grounds are very nice and clean, the people are friendly, and the showers were clean also. They do have water if you get a spot near a pump and have a Y joint. This was my first time here with a RV and I have to say for $20 a night you don't get much. The last time I was here back in Oct 2009 it was $15 a night. I love the area but I think for now on, we are just going to have to do the day trips here as $20 a night for only power is a lot of money. I can spend $15 more and get full hook ups at other places. I give it a 7 because of the price, but a 10+ for how pretty this area is and how much history is in one park. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.

I had always camped at Giant City in a tent and this was my first trip there in a camper. The sites were not that level and the boiler for hot water in the showers went out. I have always had a positive experience with Giant City and it is in a gorgeous part of the country. I will go back and give it another shot and hopefully the bathroom facility is fixed and will be open. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Tent Trailer.

We enjoyed camping here. The camp host was very friendly and helpful. The sites are gravel but level. We liked the fact that you get to pick your own site. The sites are all shaded, and it is very quite and peaceful. The shower house was very clean and heated. Giant City Park is very beautiful with a lot of interesting rock formations and trails to hike on. We would camp here again. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed here in early December. The front area has pull through sites and is level. Only a few sites have 50 amp service. Lots of trees. There are trails to take you to the giant city stones and to a prehistoric wall. Lots of places to go wine tasting in the area. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

Site was clean and level. Very scenic. A car is needed to visit the rock formations and restaurant. Wonderful dinner at the restaurant. It is a "Don't miss", cheap, too! Very remote and quiet. Family friendly. We would definitely come back. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Motorhome.

We love camping here. It feels like one of the safests campgrounds around. Camping spots available right by the park so we can see the kids but yet relax by the fire. We camped at Giant City State Park Campground in a Travel Trailer.
