Electricity but no water at the site. Level campsites. Lots of trees so some shade and privacy. Bathrooms were not very clean. The hiking paths were not maintained well and not marked well. We didn't use the mountain bike trails but there were a lot of them. Best part for us is there are quite a few first-come, first-serve campsites so we were able to find a campsite even though many local parks were reserved full. They do not take credit cards. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Electric only, water available at dump station and a few spigots. Nice big sites with lots of shade if you want or out in the open. Canoeing, kayaking, tubing, bikes for rent. A small restaurant opened this year. Lots of hicking trails. Deer viewing every night. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Come in on North Henning (North from exit 210 on I 74 West Main going east to N. Henning RD) to Park Road (going west). GPS will probably mess you up.

Very disappointed that there were no water hook ups at each campsite. Not enough clearance around the campsite for company to join you around the fire pit either. Dump station near the entrance. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

The good: This is a very relaxing, heavily forested campground with most sites fairly spacious (and pretty level). Verizon signal was good and we pulled in several OTA TV signals. Best sites for antenna or satellite TV reception would be 1-16 since they aren't surrounded as much by trees, although most still have partial shade. Sites 1-41 are non-reservable, first-come-first-serve electric. Most sites are 30 amp electric only, although there are a few 50 amp sites available. Camp Host was very accommodating, letting us go in, pick our site, and pay later since it wasn't busy. The not-so-good: Only negatives are that the shower houses (there are two) are very old. Even when clean, it is hard to tell. And, at least at the time of my visit, there was a fair amount of trash on the ground surrounding some of the dumpsters. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This is a very convenient, economical stopover if traveling on I-74 in eastern Illinois/western Indiana. Careful about GPS and other "driving instructors" steering you in through 150. I found the fastest way in was from exit 206 and then heading north on Newtown Rd. to Glenburn Creek Rd., etc.

Beautiful recreation area. Very quiet. Very few campers this time of year. There was no one in the guard house. We kept waiting for someone to come and collect. No one ever did and no way to pay. There was electric but no water or sewer connection. We were using this as a one night stop so didn't spend much time. Lovely wooded sites. Grill and fire ring. Fairly level site. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Lots of deer in this park. They come right up by your RV. It is very quiet here. Electric only for hook up. There are dump stations & water available. There are showers & wash rooms. We didn't use them so I can't say if they were clean or not. Some sights might get satellite signal but we did not. We did get some over the air signals, though. We arrived about an hour before check in time & there was nobody in the booth so we just went ahead & set up in our assigned site. We went back later to register but there was still nobody there. We reserved our space ahead of time so it was paid in full. We did ask a woman who was mowing when there would be someone in the booth & she didn't know but since we paid already not to worry. So we never did register. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

The park was very well maintained except for the water, there was a broken water line so getting water to our trailer was not easy. There was good cell service for AT&T, it has paved roads and the sites are gravel and mostly level with the sites being a good size. We would stay there again. They do charge higher for holiday weekends. We were there for 10 days from the July 2nd to July 12th. They had the best fire rings I have ever seen in a park!

Lots of wild life in the park and campgrounds. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This is the nicest state park that we've stayed in in Illinois. The sites are large and most offer privacy from other sites. We do plan to return. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

This has been a good over-night stay for us when we travel East/West. Always been happy here but this time was not good. No hot water in showers at all. Restrooms were dirty. Waited an hour before attendant came to check people in (we arrived at 3:30, he came closer to 5pm and was not very friendly). We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Got a no-reservation spot with 50A electric. Toward the back of the park. Paved roads throughout. Sites were gravel/grass. Our site (37) was slightly uphill to the back and side, but nothing we couldn't level out with our jacks.
Other than cicadas, it was very quiet. We got there on a Friday afternoon and it was filling up.
Lots of places to walk around, with lakes for fishing and an area to rent canoes and kayaks.
This campground was good for one night for us, but would be nice for a longer stay as well.
Only $10 for a non-electric site. Several water spigots around the sites. Also two more at the dump station. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

This campground is very convenient to the interstate. We stayed for an overnight in the non-electric area. Rates are $10 for non-electric, $20 for electric, with 1/2 off for seniors on weekdays. All sites were level, non-electric are grass, electric are gravel. There was nice separation, typical of state parks. We had good satellite but most sites are shaded and will probably not have good satellite. Verizon was weak 1-2 bars with slow internet. We really liked this park. It has bike paths, hiking paths, fishing, and lots of deer and geese. The hosts were friendly. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

This was an overnight stop for us. We had a nice and level pull-through site. Good space around us, good electric, and some mature trees for shade. Nice not to have to disconnect the toad when overnighting. This is our 2nd time here and will continue to enjoy for our stops. Only drawback - several miles of narrow twisty 2 lane to get to the park. Lots of geese. My kids laughed when, looking at the goose droppings by the river, they realized the relevance of the name....Kick-a-poo! Bathrooms and showers were very clean. Stayed on fox loop site 89. The center sites on this loop are all pull thrus. 75 ft long and 75 feet to next site. Excellent loop and site. Still cold out so only one other camper in our loop. Would love to stay here again for longer. Friendly campground host came around and collected our money. Very clean park. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

We stayed in one of their two pull throughs, and the site was very nice, large and near the bathroom. Lots of deer in area. However the bathrooms were not clean, so that is why I give it a 5. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

We did not have a good experience at this campground. The first encounter was with the park attendant. She would not let us pick our own sight but assigned a site. When we later tried to change the site, he acted very put out that we would ask and basically refused to change the site. That set a very negative tone which was made further negative when our neighbor moved in and listened to the radio very loud all afternoon. Finally, there is a lot of interstate traffic noise and they have a very bright streetlight by the restroom. So, if you are looking for peace and quiet, we could not recommend this park. I suppose, it is better than a Wal-Mart parking lot to spend the night, but not a lot. We camped at Kickapoo State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
