Nice park run by the City of Rantoul, IL. Location is the former Chanute AFB that closed in 1993. The RV park is located on the grounds where the base mobile home park used to be, so odd sidewalks and driveways here and there. Host was awesome. Showers and baths in the old dental facility, musty, but clean. Nice room between sites, and you cannot beat the price for 50 AMP FHU. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Motorhome.

Would I stay again? Yes!

The good news: pull-thru sites, large, spacious, full hookups.

Clean showers. Good rate. Quiet. Playground for kids.

The not so good: Lots of flying insects and sites are grassy, weedy, obviously not sprayed. Tables are old and rough. Shower handle was replaced with monkey wrench. Toilet stopped up.

Located next to close AFB Chanute. Felt like it wad being held together with bailing wire and gum.

About the only RV park in this stretch. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Motorhome.

We stayed one night on a relocation trip. This is a nice distance to drive from Elkhart. Lots of grass and mature trees. Not near any freeways so it is quiet. During planting or harvesting season there could be more activity. As others mentioned we were guided across the expansive lawn area and around trees to create a pull thru slot. There is no WiFi, but we had three bars on the Verizon MiFi. We picked up several OTA TV stations. We didn't need a reservation on Saturday in Mid September. There were several other people parked here, but not crowded with decent space between slots. New Laundry equipment. We had a cement patio and picnic table. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

This is a very nice, well maintained, quiet, restful campground. We understand it use to be a mobile home park associated with the closed USAF base. The sites are grouped in clusters of four. The hosts were friendly and helpful, leading us through the grassy yards to make the site a pull through which was very long. The roads are paved and the sites are old blacktop with a cement patio and picnic table. When exiting you have to drive over a small curb onto the road. There are many mature trees but our rooftop dish worked well. Their WiFi did not work but our Verizon hotspot worked. The 50a power was good as was water and sewer, we had to use 2 sewer hoses to reach the connection. We liked this peaceful CG. It's about 5 or 6 minutes off I57, there are several gas stations and fast food restaurants at the expressway intersection. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground is small but well kept. The majority of the RVers were over 60 years old, so it felt more like a retirement community. Aside from the small airport next door, the noise level was very low. The campground has a small playground for little kids, not much else. Our sole purpose was to find a quiet place to relax and Prairie Pines provided that for us. We would definitely revisit this campground again. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Tent Trailer.

The site we had was a back in but since no one behind us we were shown to it as if it was a pull through. We were surprised by the park. A little tired and in need of TLC it is still a great value in a very nice location. Would stay here again if in the area. sites are wide and a mix of grass and gravel. Well treed park but we were able to get satellite. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Motorhome.

This was our first time at Prairie Pines Campground. The spaces are very 'spacious' giving it a park-like setting. The RV park is located several miles from the 57 freeway making it very quiet. We were so pleased with this park we would definitely stay again. This park was a very pleasant surprise. The park host was very nice and gave an escort to our site. The electric voltage was good and all of the connections were within easy reach. I highly recommend this park if passing through for a day or longer. We had a lovely site that was much larger than the average RV site and we had full hook up with good water pressure and steady electric. Lovely park and very helpful staff. We were escorted to our site over a large grassy area as previous posters have mentioned. We would definitely stay here again if in the area. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Others have described park accurately. Managers are super-friendly and helpful. Led us over large open grassy area to make 0ur site a drive-through. Caution- because of previous life as a mobile home park, the sewer connection at each site is in the center of the site at the rear, and must be straddled when pulling through. We stayed only over night as we were on a tight schedule, but will return for a longer stay in the future. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

As other reviews stated, it is a unique campground layout given that it was a former mobile home park that was part of the air force base that is now closed. Campsites are relatively large. Access is not traditional in that you need to go over curbs to get to the camping "pad". The campground host is accommodating to help make this work by driving over grass to make the back-in site a type of drive-through site. A number of long-term campers were kept in a separate area. The bathrooms were only okay - we have seen worse and better. TV reception was limited to a couple of stations. We would stay here again if we are in the area. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We went to the Chanute Air Museum which was interesting, but we were told that this is the last year (2015) that it will be open.

This park is a gem! Talk about a reasonable price! Used to be a mobile home park associated with a military base, so sites are large with ample parking room for your car or truck. Sites are crumbly cement, but roads are good and each has a picnic table. Very neat, very nice for a one or two night stay. Very quiet, but close enough to stores and restaurants. We will stay here again. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: November, 2013 - $15.00
Overall Rating:

This municipal park, formerly a trailer park area in the long gone Chanute Air Force Base, has one of the more unusual layouts I have seen. Rather than try to describe it, I suggest you checkout the aerial view you can get on this site. We called ahead of time to make sure that the park was still open in November and, if so, still had working water faucets. We were told that the water would be turned off after this weekend (11/2). The office and bathrooms were already closed for the season. Registration and payment (off season rate of $15) was on the honor system. As there were only 4 other RVs in the park, we selected one of the few sites that looked like it definitely have satellite reception and it. As many have mentioned, the park has lots of large trees, so satellite friendly sites are few. There is no cable TV. Our site was a pull-through, FHU, and was fairly level. There was pull through access to the site only because there were no other RVs near us. If this park was anywhere near full, most sites would be difficult to enter. It would require backing in over curbs several inches high. Additionally, the electric box tends to be way back in the site, so you will be backing up 50-100" after clearing the curb. The sites are mostly grass and some sections of the sites obviously fill with water after heavy rain. I was happily surprised that, in spite other facilities being closed, the Wi-Fi worked well. I might stay here again just to visit the Air Museum next door. The odd layout, lack of cable, minimal satellite friendly sites, and lack a recreational facilities lower my rating. We camped at Prairie Pines Campground in a Motorhome.
