Planned this trip to visit family in the area. A majority of sites are permanent. The so-called overnight sites are very close and unlevel. I attempted to sit under my awning and the smell coming from the neighbor's sewer hookup (5' away) drove me back inside. We'll be staying at the state park nearby in the future. - laughing.crone

As others have mentioned, this has a very charming, mid century feel to it. The lake is a wonderful amenity. The staff was helpful and friendly. The majority of the campground is taken up with park models, seasonals and rentals. The overnight section is small. We have a 43 foot motorhome and jeep tow and found this place to be very challenging. To say it is big rig friendly is just not accurate. Low hanging branches at entrance had the tv antennae spinning and the vents and AC units scraping. The check in area across from the lake was very congested. Kids running everywhere and no great place to queue. Found out later that the campground beach and beach amenities are open to the public, for a fee, and not exclusive to the registered guests. After registering, you need to loop back to where you started to find your site. Tight, narrow roads. No good place to unhook your toad, or hook back up. Our back in site was just long enough for the rig, the toad went sideways in the street. The site was uphill, too steep to have the leveling jacks do any good. The right rear jack sunk eight inches into the gravel base. The water connection is located on the site behind you, which you share. No chance for satellite, not even using the portable. No cable. Over the air channels were 8 lousy stations and Fox, and with all of them the picture tiled badly. The only saving grace was the Internet, which was excellent. The charm wore off with a visit to the restroom. They are old, and not in a good way. Mosquito infested. Tried to take a shower but gave up after five bites. Ingress and egress off of busy Highway 12 is a challenge. - VegasVagabonds

Exceptional well maintained park located near a large metro area. The park is clean, all utilities function well and there is a very large dog park. As mentioned in other reviews, there are many park model trailers but they are very well kept. With lots of features including an 80 acker lake, this is an ideal park to kick back or visit the Chicagoland area. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The restrooms and showers, although older style, are very clean. Stay here again? Yes, definitely! - OldeJohn

We took advantage of a warm and sunny early spring day by heading out to Chain O Lakes. Only Honeysuckle Hollow is open at this time. It was wonderful for two reasons: 1. the weather, and 2. with no leaves on the trees, you could see the lake and the trumpeter swans on it. So early in the season, we did not have anyone on either side of us but I think the site would feel large enough even if we did have neighbors. Everyone was very, very nice, including the rangers, the camp host and the campers. Some rigs looked pretty settled in (and a little junky) but I'm sure the 14 day rule is enforced. Be aware of the "No Alcohol!" rule - it's hard to miss, I've never seen it posted so obviously and frequently. Probably a few too many people with the "Honey, hold my beer and watch this!" mentality. I'm guessing they are very strict about this at the height of the summer season. We would go back again to enjoy nice weather for a day or two but it is not what I could consider a destination campground. - janci

We stay at this park in the month of July when Country Thunder is in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin; nothing but good things to say about the park. Coming back again this year. Always stay in Fox Den, great sites nice and big, plus park is nice and quiet, and peaceful. - Ron Talamantes

Love the place, hate their parking policy.
Other than the parking issues, this is a lovely campground set off the beaten path. A great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. - DMAC57

We paid $42/night, which was reflected in the weekly rate. The park is primarily occupied by seasonals who are here for the access to the Fox River Basin. There is a boat ramp for those with boats. We were in a 40' motor home that requires 13' overhead clearance. The staff had to hold up low slung wires and trim tree branches for us, which they did willingly. Mosquitoes were horrible and prevented us from being outdoors. The sewer system is gray water only and is marginal for that. Pumping service for black tanks is available one time per week. The site we had reserved and paid for in advance was given to a seasonal who arrived ahead of us. You may lose your site if they get a better deal. That being said, we had a long, solid gravel, level site that accommodated our rig, our towed vehicle, and our motorcycle. This park met our needs for a week visiting family in the area. - Biker2

Mar 2018 - $20.00
The campsite is in poor condition, restrooms are filthy, poor directions for shower and dump station, the only good thing is a concrete slab with power. I will not stay at this camp site again and I would not recommend it to anybody. A nice view of the Lake. - Aaron1968
Oct 2017 - $19.00
This is a lovely campground right on the shore of Lake Michigan but sorely neglected. Stuff posted on the bulletin board was over two years old. Website says they only have one 50-amp site; all 20 sites have 50 amp service. The place to get fresh water for your onboard tanks is a squeeze between a building and fence and overhead wires. The dump station also required some extra maneuvering to get into. The sites need are concrete but the road is gravel and there are water issues - there are several pallets around for campers to stand on when it rains and leaves big puddles. The hotel clerk where you check in was argumentative and gave very poor directions. On a positive note, the electric hookup worked fine and the wifi was good most of the time. MWR activities (ITT, movies, bowling, eateries, etc) are nice and close to the campground. Chicago was about a half hour away (an hour during rush hour). - Melodycthomas

Now $19 per night. Military privileges required. Small campsites with no shade, but a GORGEOUS VIEW of Lake Michigan. The road through this campground is in DEPLORABLE condition. I KNOW it was in terrible shape over a year ago and it has only gotten worse. - KTown Santa

Nov 2017 - $25.00
This is a tiny gem in Chicagoland with a lot going for it. Only five RV sites, plus tent sites and cabins. We have only camped here in off season, $50/nite in the summer is not worth it to us when we only live 6 miles away. But they have a lot of activities in the summer, check the website and reserve early. The good: 1. It is in a forest preserve with an extensive network of hiking trails and a paved bike path. 2. The Metra station is less than 3 miles away, you can be in downtown Chicago in less than one hour. 3. Restaurants and shopping nearby at Deer Park Town Center. 4. Propane, ice, other supplies are also very close. The bad: They need to work on their logistics. Much of the information on the website is wrong, like hours and phone numbers. On some sites, the fire ring is too close to your trailer for a safe campfire. The electric hook up is on the wrong side of the pad (really). No water hook ups (oddly, they have sewer though) and no spigots. You will be hauling water, unless their hose will reach your site. They told when we reserved that we could have it (hose) for our stay but then someone pounded on our door at 9:00 at night and told us that was wrong. He did allow us to fill our fresh water tank before he took it though. This place is geared for giving an outdoors experience to locals. They have classes like Camping 101, they rent equipment like bicycles and snowshoes and even a complete tent set up with sleeping bags. If you are not local, the main reason for going there is to have a convenient way to visit Chicago. - janci

Jun 2017 - $25.00
Very beautiful spot. Spacious sites. Water access. Good walking and biking trail along Lake Michigan. Good mix of tents and rv sites. We were a bit disappointed by the dilapidated abandoned-looking state of the water access trail and ancient abandoned concession stands on the lake with gang griffiti painted over, but other than that, this was a great place. We would come again. Bathrooms old but clean and functioning. Campground has lots of trees -- good place to hang a hammock. No water hookup or sewer hookup, but both available on campground. - Paul and Jeannette
Jun 2017 - $25.00
Stayed 12 nights while attending numerous Chicago Art Fairs (expect terrible traffic and delays if going to downtown Chicago). Park is HUGE and well kept; has 2 large loops and a small "boutique" loop off to the right near the beach parking lot that has tons of shade and only a few spots. Beach was great. Our dogs loved the beach walk North. We had nice weather and variable temps, a few hot days and some cool. Our site was 303, mostly sunny but not hot, near the beach access and picnic area, only 100 feet to water/trash/small camp store (weekend only). Staff was good, only really had any close neighbors on the weekends and they were fine as well. All in all, a great base of ops for our Chicago trips. - Wilbur_W
Jun 2017 - $24.00
I have mixed feelings about this park. It is very nice with trees, walking path etc. and easy beach access. On the other hand, there is little maintenance. The bathrooms need updating. No soap is provided in the bathrooms. The shower is a push button you get water at whatever temp until it times out. There are beach concession buildings and showers that according to a local have been abandoned and boarded up for decades. They did frequently empty the trash cans. Staff was friendly. There is no charge to enter the main park which is adjacent to the camping area. There is a HUGE public parking area for the beach which is next to the campground. We saw some undesirables in that lot the first few days which we reported to staff. After that we saw more police presence and no more questionable activity. You can't stay longer than two weeks so no permanent folks. No sewer so most are there for a couple of days by my observation. We were there two weeks so dumped once and conserved after that and dumped on our way out. We were there for Memorial Day weekend and while it was full it was not crazy and neither was the beach area. A host told us they just became a no alcohol park (there are signs up). We did not witness any alcohol incidents although no one is naive enough to think there was NO alcohol in the park. Roads are easy to navigate in our big rig. Most sites are level but some have a slope so if you are in a large RV scout them out first. Some have more shading than others and that affects satellite reception. Staff patrols frequently. Sites are very wide and deep. Plenty of overflow parking. Our power was a 30 amp plug, but a sticker on the box said not to exceed 24 amps. We blew the breaker several times even though we were not using the A/C or high amp things all at once. The 50A sites are either handicapped paved sites or the 50A area which is side by side in an open paved lot with limited shade. It is like being in a Walmart parking lot with a power pedestal. - RMD3819

Aug 2016 - $45.00
The site was not good. We expected a better looking environment and updated equipment for how much we paid plus the place looked all booked up, meaning they are making good money here. They do not put any of the money back into the campground. It is a dump. We got a 30 amp premium site $45. Nothing premium about it, not even full hookup. No concrete slab. Weeds were everywhere. Bugs were everywhere. One couple left because the tiny stinging bees were so bad.
We did like walking by the animals. The animals looked good except the duck area and peacock area was very dirty and poorly kept. The fun zone is an additional $20/weekend per child. A can of pop was $1.35. We got two cookie ice creams and a generic bumper sticker for $10! The playgrounds weren't playgrounds, it was an old swing set, an old merry go round, etc., in the middle of a weed/mud filled area. The playgrounds were untouchable due to dirt and many had broken pieces and splinters.
The lake/beach was a swamp. The beach area is very tiny with dirty mud type sand. There are weeds everywhere. The pool is very small and cloudy. I cannot believe the price at this place. I really wanted to like this place. - Yellow Submarine
Aug 2015 - $45.00
This was our 3rd and last visit to this park. The staff is very rude and less then helpful, the camp host was even worse, very mean vulgar man. We requested a site we have stayed on twice before only to have them move us to the no motorcycles allowed part of the park, we told them we had a motorcycle and asked for the site we requested, they told us they were saving it for a group of people who were camping together and wanted adjoining sites who had yet to arrive. We were instead told to park it by security and walk the 1/2 mile down a very steep hill and back up a very steep hill to our site. Being handicapped I cannot walk this distance yet they refused to put us on a site where motorcycles were allowed and if we didn't want to do that then we could leave. They do not have any handicap parking or accessibilities in many aspects of the park. There is a fee to everything you do here. Showers are 25¢ extra, facilities are dirty. $48 camping fee which is 50 amp and water, NO Sewer is for 2 adults ($12.50 per night per person extra) and 4 children under 18 ($2.50 per night per child) and 2 vehicles, the one your driving and what your towing is considered 2, $5 per day per vehicle, day guests are $5 per day. They offer a bouncy play area for kids, also $20 each person for the weekend with limited hours and open from 3-7 on Friday and from 11-7 on Saturday. The pool was so dirty we preferred to swim in pond for free. If staying in this area check out Bong Rec area instead and have an enjoyable experience vs staying here. Site was a steep uphill slope. - rob4mepls
Aug 2014 - $43.00
We have been here a couple times. Our site was located near a cut through trail. Numerous times campers cut through our site, which was very annoying. Fences would certainly help as a guide. The campground could do a better job with enforcing quiet hours as well. The plumbing worked, the Wi-Fi was fine, the area seemed clean. - NorthernIllinoisPlumber

We have stayed here many times in 2004 and 2005. There are flush toilets at the Ranger Station. No reservations, but always a site except for holiday weekends. On holidays arrive early in week and get a great spot. Each spot has it's own water, elec, and fire ring. The wildlife in area is beautiful, crane, egrets, and several other fishing birds can be seen all day long. Additions of more tent sites expected soon. Aug 2015 - $19.00
We had to pay an additional $30 for a Wisconsin park entry pass. We stayed in the Sunrise Campground on the east side of the park, in the 200 loop. We were impressed by the size, spacing, and privacy of the sites here, which is the main driver for our high (8) rating. Most sites have a thick stand of trees and shrubs between them for nearly complete privacy, yet have plenty of grassy area left over for camping. There were a couple areas along the road where scraping against low-hanging branches was unavoidable. We also had to back up our 37' motorhome all the way to the wood blocks at the end of our site in order to fit our car in front. We did spot a few sites that should support longer RVs. In almost all cases the camping area was behind the site rather than next to it---picture a lollipop where the stick is where you park your RV. Usually we don't prefer this arrangement, but it worked out well for us here. Our site #223 was close enough to one of the water spigots that we were able to refill our fresh tank halfway through our stay using three hoses (75'). The spigots inside the campground aren't threaded so a water bandit or other adapter is needed. The campground host (Randy) was very friendly and helpful. The showers were pretty old, run-down, full of bugs, and the water was lukewarm at best. After our first shower we decided to just take navy showers inside the RV for the rest of our stay. There are miles of trails in the park, though we ended up turning around early due to mosquitos during our attempt at walking the trail. AT&T and Verizon both worked well. We would stay here again. - LifeRebooted
May 2015 - $17.00
Bong has two campgrounds: Sunrise, which is relatively near the entrance on 142, and Sunset, which is all the way across the park on the western end. Only Sunrise has electric sites. We camped in Sunrise campground in site #224 two different weekends in May 2015.
The sites all have gravel pads upon which you must park. Each site also has a fire ring with a very nice grill grate and a picnic table. The sites have some small trees and shrubs between then but mostly Sunrise is open, grassy sites other than a small strip in sites 145-150. There is not much privacy when you are on your site. We had friends on adjacent sites 222 and 223. 223 has the least amount of privacy of the three. All 3 are maybe a three minute walk to the bathrooms with flush toilets and showers. The ladies restroom had a lot of vandalism in the stalls that the park had clearly tried to cover/remove several times. The restroom floors are terrazzo and were wet and slick both weekends we were there. Shower pressure was OK but not overwhelming. The water is warm but temperature is not adjustable.
We had to deal with rangers because my MIL has difficulty walking and uses a golf cart. We called in advance of going to the park and were told the cart was OK. Once we arrived, one ranger woke up my inlaws to tell them not to use it and then later told us his boss had said to wait for us to use it and issue $300 ticket. No where in its campground rules does it say golf carts are not allowed but don't bring one even if you are disabled. - We_love_truck_camping

A nice little park in the middle of an Illinois corn field. There are trees, a pond, playground, tent sites and about 24 pull-through RV sites. The entrance and sites are gravel – not all are level front to back and across. To exit, you pull through your site onto the grass field around the back of other sites to the gravel road out. That is the only drawback for us because it RAINED and RAINED the 3 days before we left. That made the field very soggy. We and the owner determined that to drive across the field was not the best route out. Luckily, we had an empty site directly across and behind our rig. The owners’ staff assisted us with our exit so that any damage to the grass was minimal. Proximity to the location for the movie: Groundhog Day, Woodstock’s town square and environs, was a plus, as well. - zen_letitbe
Aug 2011 - $33.00
This is a funky little campground set well off the road on a family farm. The pull through sites look like back in sites at first glance, but the idea is to pull in and face a large lawn area which is used to pull out. Staff is very friendly, the park is quiet, with a fair proportion of seasonal campers. There is a swimming/fishing pond, table and fire ring at each site, and decent room between sites. Wi-Fi works well, but there is a $2 daily fee for Wi-Fi. The park is close enough to Chicago for antenna TV reception. Some of the overnight sites may require a bit of work to level your rig, but I've seen worse. We would stay here again. - DrLewie
Jun 2011 - $33.00
This is a small family owned campground positioned on a 100+ acre farm. It is clean and well maintained. Although the spaces between sites is small, it has a beautiful little swimming lake and has lots of open space around it. It is set back from the road by a long lane. It is busy on the weekends with family campers, but during the week is very tranquil. The manager is very accommodating and helpful. Woodstock is a very quaint small town (the movie Ground Hog Days was filmed there) with a large Wal-Mart, and a town square. There was good Wi-Fi and we got an excellent Verizon signal on our cellphone. There is an small charge for Wi-Fi and electricity if you are on the weekly rate. - sunbadgers
