13 Parks near Sandwich, Illinois
May 2016 - $15.00
Clean nice park with very little shade. Sites are level and long with some grass and some gravel. Water and power are located in the rear with a dump station at one end of the park. This park is perfect in my opinion. - illini777
Oct 2015 - $15.00
This park is relatively new, so if you're looking for shade trees it might not be good for you. There are however, new trees planted at every site that do offer a bit of shade. The sites are w-i-d-e at an angle so backing in and getting out is a piece of cake. This park is huge and laid out very very well. Its at a fairgrounds, so its pretty basic. Each site has 30 & 50 amp service along with water. There is a easy in and easy out dump station. There are no picnic tables or fire rings. Our site faced east, so the shade tree was right outside our front door. That allowed our satellite dish to get perfect reception to the southwest. It was mid-October so there was only one other RV in the whole complex. We were on our way home to Northern IL from a fall foliage trip around Lake Michigan that started in Southern WI, so this was perfect for a one night stay. We would definitely stay here again. - therealSimpsons
Jun 2014 - $15.00
Nice level grass sites on the edge of the fairgrounds. Trees are small so shade is not available. However, I felt this park had a great feel. The park manager is a great guy who is laid back but keeps the park in great shape. 50 amp service, water and a dump station for the price is a bargain. Note: Downtown Chicago is about 1 and a 1/4 hour away. - illini777
Jul 2016 - $57.00
The sewer line was not capped. Instead there was a plastic bag and a piece of wood being used as a plug for our site. The backflow valve was missing. Garbage and recycling was to be picked up between the hours of 9:00 AM and 7:00PM, instead after 8:30 PM. This sat outside all day on our site for kids to kick and play with. My wife and granddaughter were playing miniature golf and the place was a disaster. Loose boards with exposed nails and screws were present with loose electric wire which was laying about and Christmas decoration laying on the ground with hooks and wire fasteners laying about. These were trip points and hazards that a child could easily be hurt by. The general maintenance was lacking and seem to be operated by teenagers and very young adults with no managers present. They were very helpful but some were not very knowledgeable in the operations of the campground. - Jim W1
Jun 2016 - $38.00
Great family park. Plenty of activities for the kids to do. Kept them very busy the whole time we were here. The only complaint we have, is that it's time to build new bathroom/showers. They were very outdated, no place to hang towels, clothes, or toiletries, and always much dirtier than they should be at any time, even after they were cleaned. - Stone n Pebbles
Apr 2014 - $35.00
We stayed over the easter period with our 3 young kids. We all had an awesome time. Great activities for kids, fantastic putt, putt and playground. The owners and staff are incredibly hard-working, friendly and polite. Happy to help with any requests. We will stay again if ever in the area. - RRIJB
Jul 2016 - $60.00
We needed to be in this location and this was the only campground in the area. Driving in, I was impressed with the clean pool, lots of flowers and freshly painted fence. I was shocked at paying $60.00! Staff was friendly but that doesn't justify such a high cost. No cable or internet unless you sat on their porch with a computer. Bathrooms were average. The dump station was situated so your RV is tilted in such a way that your tanks can't drain. How can a campground charge so much for just a bit of space? - Silvana CLark
Jun 2009 - $30.00
Camped here twice so far, they have 9 short term sites. Family friendly and dogs are welcomed. All 9 sites are back in and are tight. Nice pool and Camp store. Not a lot to do at the camp grounds itself. - Mojo 035
Jul 2007 - $28.00
Fairly priced with good people, and affordable amenities. It was a clean park, and we were very satisfied, so would go back again. - jjfamily
Jun 2013 - $35.00
We stayed here in a 40Ft rig. Most of the sites are taken up by long term seasonal residents. Management is good, have on-site security, and have worked hard in cleaning up the trash. Our rate for the month of June is $500 which includes electric. However we have found some people are charged less. We stayed here because of family in Montgomery, IL. which is close by. They do not have a website, but if you do a search you can find it on the web. - User3006
Oct 2015 - $38.00
Park was generally clean but the "comfort station" was old and in need of updating. Showers were hot but cost $.25 for 7 1/2 minutes. More than enough time for a shower. Sunday night other campers were loud late but ceased around midnight. Last part of the season, so no big deal. We would stay here again. - Camping Hoosier
Aug 2015 - $46.00
This is a nice campground. The owners have a lot of attention to detail and quickly responded to, and solved, a sewer drain problem (was clogged by previous campers). My "8" rating is based on a few minor criticisms, some of which are out of the campground's control.
Getting into the lot was very difficult, requiring a lot of back and forth movement, due to the tight spacing of the lots. Fortunately, the owner recognizes that and personally aids the campers in backing into the spaces. However, prior to departure, I asked the neighbors to move their vehicles so we could leave without disturbing them early in the morning.
Use of the lake/pond is included in the camping fees, but the water visibility was probably no more than 6 inches. The owner claimed the water tests all come back excellent and that the visibility is likely due to sediment as it is supposedly clear in the mornings. The lake/pond was very busy when we were there, so the sediment may have been the issue, but it was the worst I have ever seen in a lake/pond.
Use of the pool (which was very clean), costs $1 per person per day. I suspect they charge that in order to limit the number of persons using the pool as it is not very big and, after looking at the lake, many people may prefer the pool. Since the rate on the campsite was reasonable, the extra charge for the pool wasn't necessarily that bad, but I hate feeling like I am "nickle and dimed" when I go to a campground, so that fee was a bit of a turnoff for me. I would prefer they raise their rate slightly and have the pool use included.
The Miniature Golf was fun, but it also requires an extra fee. As above, I would prefer to not have to pay extra for the amenities, but I suppose if someone were only going to camp overnight and not use them, then that allows them to stay less expensively.
I would consider staying here again if I were in the area. I commend the owners for their hard work and attention to guest safety and comfort. - JB in Indy
Jul 2014 - $50.00
Beach was nice. Outside of that everything had issues, like not enough bathrooms; after 10am most were backed up. Our son had to drive 10 minutes away to a gas station to use their facilities. We were charged to use our air conditioner, but our site only had a 20 amp connection. Even with an adapter we did not have the current to run the AC, but we were charged. Site was very difficult to access; owner admitted he never put a pop-up on the site. The site was for primitive camping, but again overcharged. Plus, issues like charges to use showers, pool made this park very costly. We also rented two cabins and the owner made refunding security deposit very difficult stating "well, the fire pits were dirty". The cabins were infested with spiders, making most of our group refusing to use the cabins. We will never return. - Bob & laurel
Sep 2016 - $25.00
Spotlessly clean spacious park with gravel sites and paved handicapped sites. Staff very friendly, firewood $5 for a nice bundle. All sites 50 amp with water, but no sewer hook-up. Two dump stations at exit. There is an equestrian area also. As it's a new park there are only small trees. We stayed for an Escapees event and others commented on it being a nice quiet park. We will return. - K&J
Aug 2016 - $25.00
Clean open park, surrounded by farm land. Wooded area to the south. Nice flat gravel pads. No sewer at pad, dump station at exit. Bring an extension hose for your water. Sounds of trains passing occasionally. On a Wednesday the week before Labor Day weekend the park was deserted. WONDERFUL bike or walking path through fields and around a water filled quarry. I'd return if the park was not full. - RVStudent
Jun 2016 - $25.00
This is a young park, meaning the trees are not big enough to give shade yet. You drive in and find a space you are comfortable with and the attendant will stop by later to collect the fee and pertinent information. It is a large, clean park with a comfortable amount of room between sites. All of the sites are 50 amp, so we used an adapter - and we lost power a couple of times with the AC going most of the time during the first heat wave of 2016. There are pull thru and back in sites on gravel with grass between each site. We stayed three nights, very quiet and comfortable. The park has water and electric only. Dump stations on-site. We would stay again. It's a long ride from I-80. We stayed in a 28' motor home with a tow. - Thirdtime
Jul 2015 - $35.00
We pulled into this campground if you can call it that, and paid for a two night stay. While my husband was inside paying I just got a bad feeling about this place. It felt like a place you would see in a horror movie. The road into it was narrow and full of holes, a man in a raggedy golf cart led us to an area and told us to "pick a site". We got out if the RV and looked for a site with sewer hook ups. Could not find one with water electric and sewer. The sites were just grassy and muddy. Nothing about this place said "camp here, feel safe". We began to wonder if we were in a junkyard or campground. We decided that neither of us had a good feeling, so we drove back to the office aka shack and got our money back. My husband said it was no problem and they probably had it happen before. My cousin said the place was known for drug raids and murders!!! Stay away from this place unless you like living or staying in an area where your life is in danger. Hideaway should be condemned and buried!!! - CaptainKarl
Jul 2015 - $35.00
This place is dirty, looks like a junkyard with abandoned trailers sitting all over the place. The "pond" they say is chlorinated was dirty, fish couldn't live in it, the play ground by the pond was dirty with garbage all over the place. If the city or county ever tested the pond water I am sure that they would shut this place down. We will never stay there again, even if it was free. - Sjmak
May 2015 - $35.00
First off - you should know that 1 star is as low as this site will allow one to rate an establishment. Secondly, 2000 characters is the max and that's not nearly enough for an accurate picture of this landfill. It is not safe here. It is not sanitary, or even clean. A schizophrenic (not hyperbole) owns the place and has a captive workforce of otherwise homeless ex-cons allowed to live in the trailer graveyard that rings the "park". Over half of the trailers here are no longer mobile. The roads are often impassible by all but a serious 4wd. Do not bring a heavy RV here, nor a trailer of any kind, unless you have an offroad capable truck, and a strong one. In fact, if you value your property and your safety, do not come here at all. Finally, this place is adjacent to an outdoor gun range. Weekends are nonstop gunfire, so you don't know whether it's coming from inside the "park" until the Kendall County Sheriff's Dept. arrives, which is often enough that I know them by name. In short, this place is for those with no choice. It's the only park within an hour of the city that stays open through the winter. Still, if you can conceive of any other option - go with that. I guarantee none of this will seem like a joke when you cross the railroad tracks into Hide-A-Way Lakes. - Marc and Tinker
Jun 2016 - $20.00
Have been coming here for years when the kids were small, before full-timing. This park is a top camping draw for families from The City and fills almost every Summer weekend, during the week not even a tenth filled.
This park features a big fishing and paddle sports lake, no motors over 10hp. Buy a license! DNR Police are active here.
The day-use and camping sections are separate and distinct. There is a restaurant at the day-use side and a great camp store with fishing and camping supplies as well as food and ice cream treats on the camping side.
There are boat rentals at each location.
There are 150 camp sites, FCFS and ReserveAmerica. They are all back-in, electric only, level is debatable. The park works hard to keep the woods at bay and is constantly pushing it back, but the sites are still very woodsy, many are in twilight all day. The State Park has a booster club and many supporters. See this web site, not Illinois DNR, for lots of info about the lake and park, as well as pictures of the camping sites and lots of fish pics:
This is a camping park mostly tent camping, pop-ups, and travel trailers. Motorized RV are probably truck campers and small rv's. Check the photos in the above noted web site. Large Class A's and 5th wheels would have a chore getting in. There is a fire ring and picnic table at every site and there is plenty of grass around before giving way to the woods.
There are good hiking trails, including a formidable one around the lake.
Families and children play all day and never stop exploring the woods. This is not a quiet place...it is not supposed to be.
Besides the usual outhouses there is a single shower and bathroom building which, though cleaned daily, is severely taxed when the park is full. It is rather Spartan, at best.
Four host couples, scattered about the park keep things running smoothly without spoiling the fun. - Jack B
Jul 2015 - $15.00
Lived in the area before full-timing and know this park well. 150 sites: 60 FCFS, 90 Reserve America. It is a park all about a big lake for fishing, kayaks, canoes, and sail boards. No motors over 10hp. There is a day use area with cafe, boat rentals, and camp store. The camping area is separated from day use and also has a camp store and boat ramps. This is a park for tents, pop-ups, and small trailers. All sites are back-in, level is no way guaranteed. Many sites are very short, not designed for big Class A's or 5th wheels. The park is very heavily forested and camp sites cut into the woods. Camp sites are clear by constant use. Summer weekends are almost always full. Many miles of walking trails are mowed clear. Only one brick-and-mortar bathroom with two toilets and showers, the rest are all pit type outhouses. If possible, drive this park first and note the good sites. Because of its size there are five host couples on site and will help whenever they can. This park is basic but very nice. - Jack B
Jun 2014 - $25.00
We loved this campground. Beautiful, wooded sites, (for the most part) clean bathrooms. Large lake for fishing (no swimming) and boat rentals. Nice playground and volleyball court by the dock and camp store, hiking trails. Great place to unwind. We will camp here again and I have recommended it to others. - rollinrollinrollin
Oct 2014 - $35.00
We had called this park twice before arriving, and had not received a call back. We went anyway. Roads throughout the park were bumpy, muddy, full of potholes. There were many permanent residents in broken down, trash strewn places that should have been bulldozed. Crowded, non-level, barely paved sites obscured by fallen leaves. I saw a Pitbull, off leash, and mentioned it to the owner. I saw things happening that led me to believe that "anything goes" and if there are any rules in place, they are certainly not enforced. We drove through the park a couple of times, with the owner and another fellow. I feared for the safety of our rig and our small dog. Luckily we found another place to stay and left. - mrsweeble
Jun 2011 - $35.00
It is open year round. There are lots of permanet residents there. The dogs run free but are friendly. The trees infested with carpenter ants. There is only wifi by the office with no shade. We were there over the 4th and firecrackers were going off until about 3 a.m. - hap
Jul 2010 - $35.00
This was our first time camping with our new camper. We did stay over a holiday weekend. The camp site itself was very nice, private and quiet. We did see the pool, but did not use it. The overall campground itself was ok. There were permanents all through out the campground, some were nice and others needed to be taken away. People were friendly and we as a family will stay at this campground again. - fairfield5
Jul 2015 - $40.00
The campground was very poorly maintained with very rough and pot holed roads, the roads were very dusty and heavily traveled with speeding golf carts and off road ATV type vehicles, woke up the next morning with 1/8" of dust on RV and truck. Fire works all evening until they either ran out or got tired of them. the sites were very close, for what should have been maybe 3 sites they had 6 if there had been a camper beside us we could not have put out our awning. There appeared to be no rules; when asked another camper said others have been told if you don't like it leave. Well I will not be back. Keep on looking. do not stop here. - Chief Dave
Jul 2015 - $32.00
The "guard house" was abandoned, the roads almost impossible, the site electric threatened electrocution, the water stank, and we didn't feel safe leaving the coach for an excursion. Very rough people as "greeters", no site map, and we feared for our safety -slept with the pistol loaded right next to my head. - Frances and Sparky
Aug 2014 - $32.00
Was just staying the night. Camped near entrance gate as I didn't feel like spending the time to drive back to regular camping area. (Long day, 427 miles.) This was my choice as staff offered the regular lots for me to use. Staff was friendly. Had water & electric. Wi-Fi never worked where I was located. Looked like the router I was connected to needed to be re-booted to the Internet. If Wi-Fi worked and maybe if I had seen rest of campground I would feel comfortable with a 7 or 8 rating. Would stay again and would probably go to regular camping area. - Tireman9
