Excellent State Park only about an hour and a half from the Western suburbs of Chicago. Some of the sites looked like they could be difficult for longer motorhomes or trailers to get into, but most of them should be manageable. This park is quiet during the week, but fills up on the weekend. Nearby campstore has firewood and other supplies available. There is a nice boat launch at the campground and at the main park building there are available boat rentals. For activities there are about 8 miles of well manicured trails for hiking or running with a mix of shaded forest and tall-grass prairie. Fishing is, of course, the main draw of the lake, but I did not see any fish-cleaning stations at the campground, but I did not look too hard. There is a central shower house with running water which was very clean. In the camping loops are pit-style toilets, but even those were clean and kept relatively clear of bugs. The camp and park staff are extremely friendly. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Great place for camping and fishing. Good base location for bike riding on country roads. Facilities are beginning to show the years of under-funded maintenance due to the State's longstanding financial woes. Most sites are difficult to maneuver longer trailers into as the width of the roads and the angle of the sites to the road (often perpendicular) make it challenging. Campground was delightfully quiet. Restaurant had good American comfort food. Reminder: Fill your fresh water tank before proceeding to your site. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed at Shabbona Lake for 2 nights in our Motor home in site 119, Canvassback Cove. The site was badly sloped as were other sites in this area. The rest room facility which we did not use had a roof with moss and weeds growing out of it. The garbage container next to the rest room was fly infested. We would not stay at Shabbona Lake in the future. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

The bathrooms and grounds could have been better maintained, but we were there off season so that might explain it. We came in after dark and both of the campground hosts were out to dinner. We had a hard time finding our campsite and would have appreciated help. However, the park is so beautiful and peaceful that this more than made up for the poor maintenance. Our campsite was on the beautiful lake and the view was just wonderful. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Have been coming here for years when the kids were small, before full-timing. This park is a top camping draw for families from The City and fills almost every Summer weekend, during the week not even a tenth filled.
This park features a big fishing and paddle sports lake, no motors over 10hp. Buy a license! DNR Police are active here.
The day-use and camping sections are separate and distinct. There is a restaurant at the day-use side and a great camp store with fishing and camping supplies as well as food and ice cream treats on the camping side.
There are boat rentals at each location.
There are 150 camp sites, FCFS and ReserveAmerica. They are all back-in, electric only, level is debatable. The park works hard to keep the woods at bay and is constantly pushing it back, but the sites are still very woodsy, many are in twilight all day. The State Park has a booster club and many supporters. See this web site, not Illinois DNR, for lots of info about the lake and park, as well as pictures of the camping sites and lots of fish pics:

http://shabbonalake.com/camp-site-photos/

This is a camping park mostly tent camping, pop-ups, and travel trailers. Motorized RV are probably truck campers and small rv's. Check the photos in the above noted web site. Large Class A's and 5th wheels would have a chore getting in. There is a fire ring and picnic table at every site and there is plenty of grass around before giving way to the woods.
There are good hiking trails, including a formidable one around the lake.
Families and children play all day and never stop exploring the woods. This is not a quiet place...it is not supposed to be.
Besides the usual outhouses there is a single shower and bathroom building which, though cleaned daily, is severely taxed when the park is full. It is rather Spartan, at best.
Four host couples, scattered about the park keep things running smoothly without spoiling the fun. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Lived in the area before full-timing and know this park well. 150 sites: 60 FCFS, 90 Reserve America. It is a park all about a big lake for fishing, kayaks, canoes, and sail boards. No motors over 10hp. There is a day use area with cafe, boat rentals, and camp store. The camping area is separated from day use and also has a camp store and boat ramps. This is a park for tents, pop-ups, and small trailers. All sites are back-in, level is no way guaranteed. Many sites are very short, not designed for big Class A's or 5th wheels. The park is very heavily forested and camp sites cut into the woods. Camp sites are clear by constant use. Summer weekends are almost always full. Many miles of walking trails are mowed clear. Only one brick-and-mortar bathroom with two toilets and showers, the rest are all pit type outhouses. If possible, drive this park first and note the good sites. Because of its size there are five host couples on site and will help whenever they can. This park is basic but very nice. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We loved this campground. Beautiful, wooded sites, (for the most part) clean bathrooms. Large lake for fishing (no swimming) and boat rentals. Nice playground and volleyball court by the dock and camp store, hiking trails. Great place to unwind. We will camp here again and I have recommended it to others. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Tent Trailer.

Prefer another campground in nearby but couldn't get in there so stayed here. Caters to fishing folks more than hikers. Small, tight campsites with fire rings (but no grills) were okay; just partial shade, which is hot in summertime. Didn't see many level sites which could be a problem for many RVers and tent campers. Canvasback Loop looks most preferred; Merganser Loop okay. Pit toilets near many sites; short walk to clean showers and toilets. Not much hot water, even at 7 AM; none at 4 PM. Quiet hours enforced but no problems with nearby neighbors. Overall experience was just okay. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

We camped here Memorial Weekend. It was full and very busy. Unfortunately, still a little cold for our kids with small kids who also came in a tent. Came for some fishing for the little kids, but no luck off shore. Lots of trees and shade, would have welcomed a little sun. Pit toilets/water nearby, a short walk to the showers/flush toilets. Some trails to walk--next time! Didn't see any rangers coming through camp, but didn't see any issues with all the people here either. Visited the park's Pokanoka’s Café for fish dinner. Was OK. Nice boat rental and store and dock area. Might bring our canoe next time, and bikes. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Typical state park. We had a great site near the huge lake in Canvasback Cove. Good fishing and a nice general store that has a variety of items for purchase. There is a restaurant on site, we did not eat there, but we will try it on our next visit. Has a lot of boat ramps which is nice if camping with a boat. Very nice camp hosts. Be careful picking your site. Some sites look like you need to back "up" hill to get into them. Those were in the Teal Bay loop. The dump and fill station was very clean and easily accessible. Two dump's, just wish they were opposite of each other instead of facing the same direction. It could get pretty tight in there if there were a larger motorhome in first. We are scheduled to go back for July 4th. Heard they have fireworks over the lake. It should be nice. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very nice campground. Nice hosts. Beautiful views of lake and landscape. Drawbacks. Most sites are terribly off level. Main gate is closed after 10pm. After that, must walk in from there, some 3/4 mile to campsites. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

One of my favorite state parks! The park takes reservations for a limited number of sites and the rest are first come. The campground map on the website has pictures of most sites when you click on the site number. So it is nice to be able to "see" the site when making reservations. Nice lake and some good hiking trails in the state park. Lots of deer and wildlife to enjoy too. Close to my home, so we camp here quite often and have always enjoyed our stay. We camped at Shabbona Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.
