Rules, rules, rules with a side of rules. This park has more rules than any other we have stayed including Yellowstone. We arrived just after 10pm due to an issue with a flat tire. We had communicated along the way that we would be cutting it close due to the issue. This is the first rule we had to deal with (No arrivals past 10pm). We were greeted by a surly gentlemen who promptly informed me that my wife could go into the office to check us in but I needed to pull my 40ft 5th wheel back around because I was too far to the left. He said I needed to u-turn around the office, exit the park and come back in. Never mind the fact that there was a policeman doing paperwork in the right lane which I didn't want to box in. I refused to move and the man's wife eventually told me that I would be ok where I was. It took my wife 20 mins to check in largely due to the presentation of the rules of the park. There are some 24-27 rules that you need to acknowledge. Pulling in, the sites were tight and getting my rig in was a chore. The sites were not well taken care of either. The grass was long and the above ground fire pit was full of ash/burnt wood and trash. No water hookups and only 30 amp service. The park itself doesn't offer much in terms of activities and would be more aptly named chain-o-swamps as water access is minimal due to the marshy wetland area in which the park resides. Bring ample bug spray or you may need a transfusion when you get home. Pit toilets in the campground. Shower facilities were a hike. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pay attention to water fill stations and fill up on your way in. Not much in the area in terms of attractions. There is a dirt race track near by if you are into that type of thing. We aren't huge fans, but went and enjoyed ourselves.

Stayed here while visiting Chicago. People in the check-in building were very friendly. Showers were clean, but the type of shower heads and water pressure was awful. They shower head was too high, so you barely got any water on you unless you are very tall. Also its the annoying push button type. The mosquitos were HORRIBLE!!!! We could not even sit outside. Each night before going to bed we had to kill mosquitos inside our camper. Approx. 10-20.I know the campground is surrounded by water, but surely they could could fog/spray throughout the campground occasionally. Also did not like the gritty stuff on the site.It rained while we were there and it was hard to keep from tracking it in the camper. We will not he returning here. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There are not too many campgrounds available in the Chicago area. We tried Fish Lake once and it was terrible. This is our "go to" campground when we come to Chicago. Its clean and well maintained. Many hiking and biking trails are within the park. The signage on the trails needs to be replaced as the current ones are not readable. Lots of mosquitoes and deer flies. Bring bug repellent. Sites are large and relatively level. Sites are electric only. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in the Fox Den area. Our reservation was for site 18. There was an issue with overhanging branches not being trimmed on site 18, and we were concerned about potential damage to our fifth wheel. We stayed in site 17 the first night, because no one was available to trim branches low hanging branches until Monday afternoon. Bathrooms are dated but clean. The park is beautiful. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We took advantage of a warm and sunny early spring day by heading out to Chain O Lakes. Only Honeysuckle Hollow is open at this time. It was wonderful for two reasons: 1. the weather, and 2. with no leaves on the trees, you could see the lake and the trumpeter swans on it. So early in the season, we did not have anyone on either side of us but I think the site would feel large enough even if we did have neighbors. Everyone was very, very nice, including the rangers, the camp host and the campers. Some rigs looked pretty settled in (and a little junky) but I'm sure the 14 day rule is enforced. Be aware of the "No Alcohol!" rule - it's hard to miss, I've never seen it posted so obviously and frequently. Probably a few too many people with the "Honey, hold my beer and watch this!" mentality. I'm guessing they are very strict about this at the height of the summer season. We would go back again to enjoy nice weather for a day or two but it is not what I could consider a destination campground. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The back end of our site was very soft, and a ranger kindly stopped by when we were pulling in to warn us not to pull back too far. Seems people have gotten stuck. This was not a problem, the site was long enough for our trailer and truck. Just be careful if it has been rainy, or if rain is in the forecast.

We stay at this park in the month of July when Country Thunder is in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin; nothing but good things to say about the park. Coming back again this year. Always stay in Fox Den, great sites nice and big, plus park is nice and quiet, and peaceful. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Love the place, hate their parking policy.

Other than the parking issues, this is a lovely campground set off the beaten path. A great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

They are the only State Park in Illinois that enforces a "car" policy. For those who do not know, the ILDNR discriminates against Class A & C where you are only allowed one vehicle per pad because the count your "hooked up" RV as a mobile vehicle. This is an outdated policy that needs to be addressed. Some TTs today are larger than some Cs & As? This is a local park for us and when staying there I commute to work.

We have never had a bad experience at this campground. It's a well run State Park and the staff is always friendly. We camp here at least 3 times per season. There is so much to do... Canoeing, Kayaking, Horseback Riding, Biking and Walking Trails. Or just set up camp and relax! The sites are nicely sized and have a fire ring & picnic table. Give this place a try if you haven't been yet. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Stayed during Labor Day, and park was almost filled to capacity. There was a 20 minute wait to check in. The hosts were friendly (probably the nicest hosts I've ever met). Long, winding road with a few tight corners and low branches that might make big rigs a little nervous. Even with it being VERY busy, the bathrooms were clean (but had a rest area feel) and the campground was clean as well. We backed in to one of the last spots they had available, and while it was a bit tight backing in, the useable area of the spot was wide, clean, and surrounded by trees & brush, almost to the point where you couldn't tell there were other campsites. Noise after quiet hours was acceptable, but there was music coming from a bar a few miles away, but it was tolerable. If you like trains, there was a far-off rumble (was nowhere near close to the camp, just that noise that lulls you to sleep). We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

It's about a 30 minute ride to six flags from this campground. There's a bar just up the road, and a gas station if you forgot something. 15 minute ride to the nearest grocery store.

Just to clarify, the restrooms were clean enough to use, but definitely not somewhere pleasant to remain very long. The highlights for us were the security/hosts who were both active and attentive in their duties. And most definitely the scenery! We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This is our 4th time staying here. We use it as a launching point for doing things in the Chicago area. We love this park. It's a huge bummer that there are no sewer hook ups, but we still like the place - which is why we gave it an 8. Aside from being close to Chicago ('bout an hour to downtown, and there is a train station near by to take you downtown if you don't want to drive which is a nice option), there is plenty to do in the campground. There are miles of walking/biking trails, there are playgrounds for the kids, and the waterfront activities are endless. There is a quiet lake in the middle of the campground for kayaking and fishing, the BIG boat launch takes you out on to the big chain of lakes which gives access to all kinds of things. There are some GREAT bars and restaurants on the lake plenty of room to water ski, tube, fish, whatever you're into. There is also a small camp store/concessions with probably the most useless staff I've ever encountered. Bunch of pot-head-types watching movies on a computer behind the counter that get all startled when you walk in.It's well stocked though. Food, supplies, firewood, and I think it's where you can rent boats too (kayaks, canoes, row boats, etc..) If it's hot and humid, breakers will be popping. It sucks. Also, they do have a no alcohol policy. So... drink in your RV with the shades pulled if you really must. :) Fire pits are weird. OK for cooking, but not really great for sitting around and having a fire. That's about it. I highly recommend this place and we'd gladly stay here again. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Motorhome.

Staff needs to know the correct approach to an RV spot. They brought us in on the wrong end of the site. Sites need work, mostly for leveling and gravel and mowing. Good paved approach. Wonderful atmosphere, shaded, great hiking. Pit toilets are hard to rate cleanliness. Near everything. We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We thought this park was very nice. It was clean, quiet, and it had plenty of security. Our kids had a good time playing around. We stayed close to the bathrooms and playground in the Hickory Hollow area. If we go back, it will definitely be during the week. Quiet hours start at 10pm. Everyone in the campground was respecting the rule...too bad the bar/band somewhere on the Chain O Lakes did not. It was very loud and annoying. It stopped sometime after midnight, as we were finally able to fall asleep. Also, Wilmot speedway is close by, but the races ended by 10pm. Obviously the park cannot do anything about that noise, but if you think you will fall asleep to the sound of crickets, forget it. I also forgot to add that the raccoons are VERY aggressive! They love chocolate! We camped at Chain-O-Lakes State Park in a Tent Trailer.
