We ended up really liking this place. It's in the fairgrounds, on the north end of Springfield, about 3 miles straight north of the historic downtown. It's basically a bunch of power poles and hose bibs sticking out of the ground on a grassy hillside and around the edges of a couple of asphalt parking lots. 30 amp had voltage problems. 20 amp was fine. We could have also plugged into the next site, but didn't need to. A few sites have sewer, but the sewer is way back at the back of the sites, awkwardly located, and we decided to just use the dump station. Most people crowd into a single asphalt parking lot. It's flatter, and there are full hookups. Most of the rest of the campground is wildly unlevel, but if there's not an event going on, it's mostly empty, and you can do what you need to to get level. We found a flat spot off by ourselves under a big oak tree on a grassy hillside. It was quiet, private, and we had an awesome tree for company. When you arrive and pay, the manager unlocks your power pole. We arrived on Monday, which is the manager's day off, so we called the Security phone number, and the security guy unlocked the pole. Being right in town and underneath a cell tower, cell service was fine. There are lots of lights all over the place. If you're light sensitive, some parts of the park are brighter than others. Pay attention to light pole placement. The bathrooms are horrid. Stay away. We rode our bikes to the historic sites in town. About 3 miles, pancake flat. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Motorhome.

Traveling in a 38 foot coach we stayed 4 nights in a site for big rigs in early March. Almost the whole park was empty except for a dozen long term tenets. If you plan to visit Springfield during this time of year there is no other place open. The older restrooms and shower building were large and heated (it was chilly out), but they had not been cleaned in some time. Same cigarettes butts, and clumps of hair were still there after four days. Check out how the water comes out before committing to a stall too. It is a typical, modern fairground campground: a parking lot with level sites, good water, electricity, no shade, no sewer. They do have a dump station. They also have many sites on the grass but many of thoses were not level. We also called the office telephone number five times, left messages, but no callback. Also for only having dozen tenets they should have had better wifi! No RV Park without usable wifi gets more than one star from us. The technology is here, there is nothing to stop any Park from investing in doing wifi properly. For some users, such as ourselves, wifi is the single most important feature in any RV Park. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Motorhome.

We camped in "B" campground, which was a level asphalt parking lot with electric & water hookups. Other lots had sewer available, others were gravel, and there were some grass campsites. The area was clean and well-maintained. We were between fairground events, so we had the lot nearly to ourselves; site spacing would be tight otherwise. There was plenty of green space to walk my dogs. There was some train noise at night; but for only $20, this campground is a great value. We would stay here again. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

Check in at office was quick and friendly staff. We were told to pick our site. Grassy site with full hookups was not level. Only a few full hookups on grass. The other full hookup sites are in the parking lot and very close together! No events when we were there so only 5 sites occupied. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Go to Oakridge Cemetery where President Lincoln is buried. Gates open at 7 am so we went for an early run. It was about one mile to the site. Vault opens at 9am. Lincoln park is adjacent to the cemetery and you reach it before the cemetery. Entire area seemed very safe. Other tourists and runners were there.

Overall Rating:

Getting to the fairgrounds is pretty easy, and access to the parking lot (which is where you hookup) is easy too. (When the sign points to the office, turn that way then keep going up the hill.) The office people were friendly and helpful. I was told that 100 of the 300 sites are full-hookup, but only about 1/3rd of those FHUs are relatively flat... those spots, as you'd expect, are taken first. We could have squeezed between two very close spots in the flat area, but opted to go to the parking-lot-on-a-slope, and work on leveling our rig. I was also told that certain times of the year, the place is truly packed, so always call ahead. RVs back in (you could go in front first, I suppose) and all hookups at at the back, so the sewer run is long. Good cell signal. We didn't use the restroom/showers. Great value for FHU. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Just an overnight stay... wished we could have stayed for all the museums and historical sites. But when taking a walk nearby, we saw some riders practicing barrel racing in the open arena, so we sat and watched for a while... it was quite nice! So, get out and walk around... you never know what you might find there.

The park is very convenient to all the historic sites. The staff is friendly and helpful. The bathrooms are old. It's basically a parking lot. You have an area on asphalt and half of them have sewer. On top of the hill is the grass sites, with no sewer. The asphalt sites, you are on top of your neighbors. It's an equestrian park so there is a lot of horse trailers. All back-in spots but long enough for any size rig. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Motorhome.

Great stay. We were here 4 days with 50amp FHU. Parking Lot type setting. The non sewer sites are all in grass areas. A lot of nice grass play area or areas to walk your dogs. Normally $25. if you are 60+ or Active Military/Vet you get a $5 per day discount. Weekly & Monthly are cheap too. I would/will stay again if in the area. The Host every night built a really neat giant bon fire at the office. Plenty of room between RV's. Trash Cans & dumpsters all over, so everything is very clean. Don't miss on Tuesday at 6:30 pm a re-enactment at the Tombs and the lowering of the flag. One of the viewers there gets a flag. Lots to see in the area, lots of shopping and restaurants.

Not hard to get in or out off at Gate 11 (8th St) off of Sangamon and then follow the signs. Not many sites with sewer but we got lucky. We were on the paved area with a very long run to the sewer hookup. Electric and water worked well. This is a very convenient location to get to downtown and all of the historic sites. There are lots of sites but very few with sewer and most are very small and extremely uneven. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a great place to stay and Springfield has lots of things to do and see. Call ahead to see if they have a big event on like the State Fair - otherwise you should have no trouble getting a spot. We were on asphalt with 50 amp but they have grass areas with shade and 30 amp. The gates are locked at night and there is security. This place is close to the many things to do and see in this town. The fairgrounds is easy to find and well marked with signs. Go into Gate 11 where you can see the campground. We stayed one night in the asphalt camping area. It was almost empty. We had water and 50A, no picnic tables or other amenities only parking. Some sites had full hookups. Boondocking is $15. The office is located on the hill behind the asphalt area where other sites are located in a grassy area. We saw restrooms here. There is a dump station available. Check the calendar for any fairground events as the campground may be full. We felt safe here and drove into town to visit the Abraham Lincoln sites. The camp has a few Restrooms/Shower buildings. The red brick restroom/shower building is is much better shape. Well lit, concrete floors and showers a good size, hooks and bench. Found the water temperature to be a bit too cold. The wooden restroom/shower buildings were poorly lit, have fewer stalls and showers. The showers were very rustic looking so I didn't use these. The entrance to the camp is through Gate 11 which is at the cross of 8th Street and Sangmon Ave. Enter the gate, make a left after the stop sign and go up the hill to the office. Look for a white building on the right. Staff was very polite and helpful. Office opens at 11 am Tues-Sat. Power 30 amp and water connections were fine. Our site was at the top of the hill in a grassy area, lower sites are in a paved parking lot. Our spot was long enough but drops off quickly in the back. We were there on non event days so the CG was almost empty. For Seniors on non event days the $20 fee is WONDERFUL! We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.

Great place for Lincoln history. L's Home, museum and tomb. In the summer on Tuesdays at 6:30 PM (check dates and times) the have a special ceremony taking down the flag at the tomb/cemetery. We also visited the state capital - one of the tallest in the US.

Partially built on a hill. Many sites are not very level and it would be hard to level an RV. Since they have very few campers except during events, it is easy to select a level site on the grassy hill. Another part is an asphalt parking lot which is level where they have 50 amp hookups. Security comes around often and we did not see non-campers in the park. This is not a destination park but OK for visiting the Lincoln sites in the area. The two security guards that I talked to were extremely helpful and friendly. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Motorhome.

We stayed here in "off-season", mid-April. Campground is basically empty w/ only a few long-term (2+ yrs) residents. Park value is great @$20-25/night. Okay for brief stop to see area sights (there's not another campground close by, otherwise, we would have left.) We called Security to check in and allowed to pick our own site. Overall park is clean and spacious; water not on due to cold weather but accessible in the Handicap section. Our site D1 was filthy due to a former resident who'd moved to another site. Attempts to get him to cleanup were futile. Same resident let his dog run the area off leash, and again, multiple requests to him to control his dog went unresolved. We reported to campground Mgr when office finally opened. Women's bathrooms were dirty-one shower had animal feces in the drain. Security unlocks each power box upon paid check-in. Must use x-long water hose and at least 40' sewer hose. Site level and long. Lots of grassy areas for pet walking. 24-7 security on call and well lit at night. We camped at Illinois State Fair Campgrounds in a Fifth Wheel.
