Planned this trip to visit family in the area. A majority of sites are permanent. The so-called overnight sites are very close and unlevel. I attempted to sit under my awning and the smell coming from the neighbor's sewer hookup (5' away) drove me back inside. We'll be staying at the state park nearby in the future. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Travel Trailer.

Exceptional well maintained park located near a large metro area. The park is clean, all utilities function well and there is a very large dog park. As mentioned in other reviews, there are many park model trailers but they are very well kept. With lots of features including an 80 acker lake, this is an ideal park to kick back or visit the Chicagoland area. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. The restrooms and showers, although older style, are very clean. Stay here again? Yes, definitely! We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

As others have mentioned, this has a very charming, mid century feel to it. The lake is a wonderful amenity. The staff was helpful and friendly. The majority of the campground is taken up with park models, seasonals and rentals. The overnight section is small. We have a 43 foot motorhome and jeep tow and found this place to be very challenging. To say it is big rig friendly is just not accurate. Low hanging branches at entrance had the tv antennae spinning and the vents and AC units scraping. The check in area across from the lake was very congested. Kids running everywhere and no great place to queue. Found out later that the campground beach and beach amenities are open to the public, for a fee, and not exclusive to the registered guests. After registering, you need to loop back to where you started to find your site. Tight, narrow roads. No good place to unhook your toad, or hook back up. Our back in site was just long enough for the rig, the toad went sideways in the street. The site was uphill, too steep to have the leveling jacks do any good. The right rear jack sunk eight inches into the gravel base. The water connection is located on the site behind you, which you share. No chance for satellite, not even using the portable. No cable. Over the air channels were 8 lousy stations and Fox, and with all of them the picture tiled badly. The only saving grace was the Internet, which was excellent. The charm wore off with a visit to the restroom. They are old, and not in a good way. Mosquito infested. Tried to take a shower but gave up after five bites. Ingress and egress off of busy Highway 12 is a challenge. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

We are full time RVers and have stayed at many RV parks around the country. This park is almost entirely seasonal campers most of which own park models on their lots. There are a number of traditional rv spots for short term campers and some vacant park model sites available to longer term RVers. If you have children, this is a great place to be. There are a considerable amount of activities for them to engage in. Our granddaughter loves this place. We stayed in a vacant park model site on the pond which is a desirable place to be. The site itself was in a bit of disarray with a mixture of gravel, dirt and weeds to park on. The full hookups worked properly but the faucet needed work and dripped the entire time. The entire park is thoroughly covered with huge trees so getting satellite service can be a problem. The trees however keep it cooler because of their shade. Sites can be difficult to get parked in; most are pretty level though. We would stay here again. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

This was an experience. First I'll say the staff is a 12 on a 10 scale. Our situation required some patience and extra effort from them: they came through with flying colors. The park is as others have described a throw back to the 50's & 60's "at the lake camping experience."

The park is mostly permanent residents (at least seasonal) in modular trailers. Each site personally decorated/landscaped by the owner. And awards are given with a proudly displayed wood carved plaque "Super Site 1999" etc. Thus you have that area kept up nicely by both the maintenance crew and by the owners.

We were assigned a vacant seasonal spot as the standard RV sites were booked. Ultimately, due to narrow roads in the park at my site, coupled with our pulling a 33' Fifth-wheel with our crew cab, long bed, 4x4 one-ton truck (with a turning radius of a half-block!), they used a hitch equipped tractor to get my trailer into the space. Well done.

My only complaints of substance are first: that since this is a very heavily wooded (beautiful) park our satellite would not work, and they had no cable in our site. And there is WiFi only at the office area, not throughout the park. Odd.

Yes, we'd stay here again: but likely in a dedicated site for RV's. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here for 5 nights. On arriving after long travel day camp seemed crowded (lots of permanent). Took for ever to get info on getting to town and baseball. Staff taking us to site didn't seem to know best way to pull in. All through this staff were very friendly doing their best to be helpful. Night camping area way nicer. One of the nicest pool/ hot tubs we have seen. Some fun activities for the kids, inflatables in the pool night, bingo and a great Western/ barn evening. I would totally recommend. This campground/resort is an unexpected surprise. It has a feeling of summertime in the 1950's and 60's. Most sites are shaded by lovely trees and very roomy. Actually the entire place is in one big grove of trees. There is a smaller lake to fish. The grounds are large but feel comfy. Home to seasonal manufactured trailers with a good size area for RV's. For the size of this place, it is very clean and well maintained. Clean pool, nice play areas, paved roads for bike riding. The staff is excellent. They are not on constant patrol like some campgrounds. The patrons are very respectful and it is really quiet here, day and night. We are here in September though. We will definitely be back. Have met some nice folks. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Located about one hour from Chicago. Just North of Wauconda and near cute little town of McHenry on the Fox River. 3 miles to Grocery stores - Jewel and Aldi; Home Depot also. There is still many a sprawling corn field nearby which gives this place a sense of openness and peace.

This is a fantastic park outside Chicago. Stayed here while visiting family. Yes the roads are narrow and sites can be difficult to maneuver, but it is 70+ years old. The setting is beautifully treed and the winding little roads gave it character. It actually reminded us of the 50's or early 60's...just made us smile as we walked around. Even though we were camping there over a busy weekend, we never felt that close to our neighbors, who were all very respectful and quiet. It is approx. 90% full-timers in (mostly) very cute park models. There are lots of things for kids to do including the lake and beach, miniature golf, the pool, basketball... The staff is fantastic. Our dog had developed hives from some type of allergy and they recommended an excellent (very reasonable) vet. Will be back, maybe next year. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Fifth Wheel.

We parked in a section of the park where they put those staying a month or so. Our cost per night is based on staying a month. The area we parked in was very tight for a 40 foot motorhome. We had to back into our neighbors space to get out of our spot. The water faucet placement for our spot was on the opposite side of where it should have been so it could be shared with an adjacent spot. The water, by the way is the absolute worst water we have ever tasted and that is after filtering it three times. The 50 Amp service was very marginal and the voltage was in the red for almost our entire stay. It really got bad on the weekends when the place gets incredibly crowded. You will want to have a good surge protector on your rig to be safe. We lost power entirely a number of times.
On the positive side of the ledger, the staff running and maintaining the park are top notch and do a good job with what they have here. The park is primarily a park model facility with many owners paying seasonal rent. Many of these park models are very attractive. We have a grand daughter in the area and she is the only reason we stay here. There are many many things for kids to do here, lots of planned activities which kids absolutely love. If we had an occasion to be in the area again, we would stay here. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

The park charges extra for electricity for our site where we stayed for two months. The site price reflects the monthly rate. Because we stayed here two months, we were able to park our motorhome on the pond, which was a much nicer site than the RVs parking in the E section had. If you don't like kids in the pool and lots of activities for kids, don't come here. The place has been owned by the same family for 75 years and in all of those years, they have learned an incredible amount about how to serve their customers properly. Our granddaughter spent considerable time with us here and totally loved the place. The hookups were adequate, however sewer caps instead of a rock would be nice, a faucet that didn't leak would be better but all in all, we loved our experience here. Shopping is nearby. Our Verizon signal was great. In spite of the heavy tree density, we were able to peek through with an adequate DirecTV signal. Crank-up antenna produced a number of channels. We definitely would stay here again. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

We have stayed at this campground numerous times and I must say they have done so much in the way of improvements. The office staff couldn't be better. The washrooms we cleaned at least twice daily. The pool and beach and grounds were very well maintained. This is the most family friendly campground in the Chicago area. We have no complaints. To be fair, we visited this park on a holiday weekend and it was evident that many families had been here for the whole time. It was obvious that maintenance was unable to keep up. The 45 sites designated for short time renters was primarily tents and trailers which seemed to spread into each other. The showers were swamped and unpleasant. On the other hand, our site was beautifully shady and water and electric performed well. Much of the park is park models. We were thankful for special service as they squeezed us in as soon as someone vacated a spot and called to let us know they had a site. It is not on the way to anywhere, and I would not trouble to go again. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.

We were at a full hook up site which we loved. Our site was roomy and shaded with trees, we didn't even have to use our awning. Their bathrooms were very clean, and while using the shower I actually saw a work person come in and stock the bathrooms with toilet paper and make sure everything was in place. They had a nice schedule with activities for each day of the week. Firewood was reasonable-10 large pieces for $6. We liked the park and would definitely visit again. The rate reflects a month stay. This was a good place to stay. Most of the campground is for seasonal campers who own the park models they are in. The staff was for the most part great. The campground is located in a good area for shopping and entertainment. The only negatives for us were a lack of cable tv and the WiFi which, when it was working, could only be accessed in an open air pavilion or in the immediate area around the pavilion. This place gets busy on the weekend with locals using the campground beach and the transient spaces. It wasn't bad too bad though even when it was packed. The showers were very clean and the pool was good. We will stay here again when we are back in the area. We camped at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort in a Motorhome.
