The majority of the campsites are in an open field with no shade. We arrived on a 94 degree day and it took several hours to cool the camper since our site was in the direct sun. Our original site was occupied requiring us to find another site. Majority sites are not very level. The sites on the outer edge of the campground do offer some shade. I would not stay here again. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice campground. Total privacy during the week. Weekends had to be busier. Not a camper within a 1/4 mile. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Our site for 4 nights provided us with a distant lake view during the early fall, this park is huge and have lots of camp sites. Sites are fairly close together with mostly level pads for your camper and other vehicles. Looked to me that many of the better sites where reserved in advance and I will be doing that the next time we return to this park. There is a lot to do here with many hiking trails, visitor center and easy lake access to walk the shoreline, but the lake is the big draw here. Huge lake with great fishing and boating. Entrance fee into the park for campers. The only major complaint I have is the number of fly's that where in the area, they swarmed around everyone campers and when the door was opened in they came, but they didn't bother us anywhere else in the park. I should have know it was a problem when the camp store had fly strips for sale. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

The park was hard to find and the campsite was also hard to find. We were there in a 40' RV and most of the sites were small and back-in. For the price, I have stayed at better State Parks. The Beach area was closed because the water level was so low. There were very few campers there. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a very nice campground. The check-in process was very easy. Most of the sites are nicely spaced. We stayed at Site Number 201. We loved the site, however we wish it had more grass (it was mostly dirt). Patoka Lake State Park is a very nice, well kept park. The only real complaint we have about the campground is that it has no water or sewer hook-ups at the sites -- even with conserving water, this makes it difficult for a family of five to stay much longer than two days without have to hook-up the camper to our vehicle and driving to the dump station and fresh water fill station (separate locations). I have seen this problem at many of the state parks in Indiana. However, even though there are some negatives about this campground, we will probably be back for a one night (or two at the most) stay. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The camp sites are close to level from side to side but still needed a little tire blocking. The site was okay for our 21BH but our friends with a 33ft 5th wheel had it a little harder to set up due to the sites not being deep enough. Water is available up front to fill your tank but the hydrants in the campground are NOT threaded. JUST AN FYI. All and all we had a great time and the catfish were biting well on the lake! We plan on coming back soon. We stayed at site 345 which would have been difficult for a 5th wheel or any camper with a passenger slide out due to a tree. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Very large, spread out campground in the Newton-Stewart State Recreation Area. The nearest town to pick up supplies would be Birdseye, IN. If you want a Super Wal-Mart, then that would be Paoli, IN which is about 25 miles away. There is a campstore on site with basic provisions and a pay phone (cell phone coverage is spotty throughout the park). We were able to receive several TV channels over the air, but mostly at night. The pads are somewhat small; as though the campground was developed back in the days when we all had smaller campers and tents. This is not to say that you can't fit a fifth-wheel, but be sure you pay attention to the site description when making your reservation. The rest of the site is nicely sized not too close to the next door site. As for reservations, it is recommended during the summer. Part of our stay was during the weekend and most of the sites were occupied. Some of the sites are also sloped, but we didn't see any that were extreme. Water spigots are spread throughout the campground but the sites themselves are electric only. Bring a water thief because the spigots are not threaded. The restrooms were very well cleaned. There are also a few playgrounds in the campground. The main attraction here is the reservoir. Patoka lake is the second largest lake in the state. It is HUGE. There are at least three marinas on the reservoir and several boat launches. We saw everything from canoes to houseboats. Much of the lake has unlimited speed limits for those that want to water ski, etc. There is also a nice sandy beach. The water was very warm, I would estimate 80 degrees. A beach house with lockers and showers is also on site, as well as a concession stand. The concession stand was not open the couple of weekdays we were at the beach, perhaps it's open on weekends. In addition to the lake, the Newton-Stewart S.R.A. also has miles of hiking trails, an archery range, and a nature / visitor's center. The facility is many miles across and very hilly and picturesque. Hunting is also permitted in season. This place is probably very pretty in the fall. While at the the facility, visit the Witcliffe Plaza Pizza and Cafe. Good pizza, breakfast, and an impressive bakery also. Very friendly people. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This campground is part of the Hoosier National Forest and was a very nice park. Even with the busy holiday weekend and 100% occupancy, the linear design of the campground gave most sites privacy with plenty of shaded sites. The linear design, though, didn't necessarily make the trash dumpsters, shower houses or playgrounds very conveniently located (depending on the site). The beach and lake were well maintained and reflective of the beautiful terrain offered by southern Indiana. We camped at Patoka Lake State Park in a Tent Trailer.
