Nice campground. No water or sewer hookups. Expect lower temps due to the lake winds. Great views when hiking on top of the dunes. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If you are considering taking the Calumet Trail adjacent to the park, wear water shoes. You'll be traveling through water 25% of the time. Should never have been called a bike trail.

Date of Stay: September, 2017 - $30.00
Overall Rating:

This is a fantastic campground situated right on Lake Michigan, easy to navigate with long, level, paved campsites. Good separation from neighbors. We stayed here 9/11 to 9/15. There are many dune trails to hike, although we didn't do any hiking while we were there. We were in site 125 (electric only), but had to run off 30 amp power as our surge protector showed a reverse polarity error when plugged into the 50 amp outlet. We told the maintenance man, who looked at it but wasn't able to fix it while we were there.

The pavilion near the beach was closed for the season, and we heeded the dangerous condition signs posted for no swimming or wading in the lake. Bathrooms were clean, and shower area had a few bugs and no place to hang items (like clothes or a towel), but had good water pressure. There is also a one-time $12 fee for non-residents when entering the campground. Overall a very nice campground and we would stay here again. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We arrived on Sunday without reservations because it showed plenty of availability. However, checkout time on Sunday is 5pm so only sites available were ones that had been checked out of. It turned out ok for us just something to be aware of if arriving on Sunday. Paved roads and campsites with electric only. Lots of trees and we weren't able to use our satellite but we did get several OTA stations. Strong Verizon signal for hotspot since there isn't wifi. Plenty of grass for dog walking. Would be a great place for family camping. We would return if in the area. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Be aware you will pay a $12 state park visitor fee on top of the camping fee, so the cost of the evening was $44. We used this park for an overnight stay as we were traveling east from Missouri to Detroit. What a great find! Our site #66 was a back in, electric only 50amp. The site was level and we had some privacy due to the size of the lot and the natural vegetation between us and the campers around us. We were there on a Friday, so the campground was quite full. Reservations are a must. We enjoyed hiking across the boardwalk to the shore of Lake Michigan and viewing the Chicago skyline in the distance. There was ample room to leave our truck hooked up to the camper. We would stay here again. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Clean but family-filled state park, full on a weekday in mid-summer. Fifty amp connection did not work; was repaired the next day. Neighbor let us use his 50 amp socket. Satellite TV okay. Some space between sites. The namesake dunes are the main attraction. Trails to dunes are more moderate than easy. One hour to downtown Chicago midday, 1 ½ hours return at 4 pm. Very busy campground so need to make reservations in advance on line only. Will take up to 6 months only. $7.00 in state or $12.00 out of state entrance fee at gate not included in nightly rate. Verizon service good. 60 antenna channels. Town of Chesterton close for grocery shopping - no Walmart or KMart. Camp store has limited food supply. Need to make reservations on line. They do not accept them at the park. They start taking them 6 months in advance so would suggest starting early because they fill up fast. Close to the beach so bring your swimwear!!

Rate was $99 for four nights; additionally there was a $5 transaction fee, $7 sales tax, and a one time $12 non-resident entry fee. Actual cost was $30/night. Our site was a back in, paved, 50 amp site. The 50 amp may not have been wired correctly because our external surge guard did not turn on. Water and sewer sites are not available in this park. The site was sloped and required blocks under the front tires. We had good Verizon cell and Internet reception. We had marginal DishTV satellite reception because of the trees. We arrived on Memorial Day when the campground was full. During the remainder of our stay more than half the sites were vacant. We would stay here again. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice, popular campground. Paved level sites with good spacing. Bathrooms were well maintained but had a bunch of birds nesting above the entrance, so watch your step. Easy access to the beach and other trails from the campground. Dump station available on the way out. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Travel Trailer.

I stayed here two nights while passing through in a 27 foot motorhome with a tow car. Nightly rate doesn't include $5 transaction fee and $6 entrance fee charged by Indiana. Campground is open and grassy with lots of shade trees. I was in site 63 which is in the shade on a corner and is dirt but has no one to the back or to the passenger side. Concrete pads are level and all uniformly about 25 feet long. Asphalt driveways vary in length and slant. Some big rigs required a fair amount of leveling. Driveway includes a widened paved area to park the car which is nice. I was there before Memorial Day weekend and had my choice of sites. It will fill on weekends but would still be very easy to maneuver around in. I came here for the dunes. There are numerous walking trails of various lengths (one of which starts in the campground) which are beautiful as is the beach. Beach other than swimming beach is dog friendly. Nature center is adjacent to campground. Lots of day use areas. Verizon service was excellent. Lots of raccoons. Very convenient dump station and water fill up stations. State park is located inside the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. They share a visitor center. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

This is one of the nicest and most popular Indiana State Parks, with a variety of hikes and things to do in the adjoining Indiana Dunes National Seashore. The 140 sites are all grouped together, with only about 25 on the perimeter. At the rest you'll have another camper or a road behind you. Roads and pads are asphalt and sites are even and level. Sites are electric only, with central fresh water and a dump station. Sites are open, and with enough scattered trees to provide some shade but no real privacy. Central bathroom and showers are modern, clean and slightly heated. There are also two pit toilets, at the far ends of the camping area. Fees include a $5 registration fee on line, sales tax, and a one-time $9 per vehicle entrance fee collected at the gate. We paid a total $78 for two nights. A one-night stay would cost about $46. Verizon service was good: 2bars, 4G. Would stay here again. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

"Scavenger hunt" was a lot of fun. "Century of Progress" homes were interesting. If you're looking for a break from camping food, AJ's Pizza in Valparaiso is very good and popular with the locals. There is also a commuter train station nearby, so the park could be used as a base station for trips into Chicago on the South Shore line. (about 1.5 hours each way)

Overall Rating:

This state park campground is surrounded by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. It is on route 49 and when you drive in you pay an entrance fee for an out of state vehicle the cost is $12. There are 113 sites in two loops with two big bathhouses with showers and pit toilet located throughout the park. Electric sites are about $23 plus taxes and fees. There is a trail to the beach uphill coming back. The park has beaches, trails, bird observation platform. nature center and a pavilion. Sites are paved and a good size but not that private. There is a bike trail as part of the National Lakeshore but at this time it is terrible. It seems that they have money to fix it but are waiting for a gas line to go in. One still can ride on route 12 and along the roads leading to the lake. We camped the first week in April and pulled in on a Sunday. If you have a Sunday reservation be warned that those camping on the weekend do not have to leave until 5pm and some left later than that. It was a nice park but they allow others to walk through the campground and a number of families seem to come in for the playground. There were a lot of RV's when we came in and quite a few stayed even on Monday. Need a reservation in the summer and on many weekends. We camped at Indiana Dunes State Park in a Motorhome.
