Enjoyed our stay here. Friends of ours are workampers at Adventureland and it was nice visiting with them for one night. Ate dinner at Spectators Sports Bar. Lots of tv screens, good drinks and food. Did not have time in our schedule to visit the amusement park. Hope to return next year and visit the park. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Here since May 1st and it remains an older but clean and maintained park in the city of Altoona but very close to Des Moines with its big city businesses and attractions. Park has long pull thrus for the bigger rigs (ours-67 feet hooked) plus many camp circles with fairly easy backins for the smaller units and groups who wish to be together. Hookups have electric pedestal and hose bib or water stand pipe with sewer drop placed fairly decent in sites. Roads paved with asphalt and 98 % of sites asphalt with 10 to 15 newer concrete sites. Tent sites are on south end of park. Four comfort stations have one shower for men and one for women with three having two washers/dryers and pool/group meeting building has three washers/dryers. Office will accept mail, packages, and will take out going mail (pre stamped),with small camp store an propane for sale. Walking bridge connects to amusement park with shuttle service also during season from rv park. Several points that keep this only a four star park is poor maintenance of washers/dryers (have to keep after park management when units are down) and too many people drive through park like its I-80 with little to no regard for people with dogs and children walking and playing. Have been nearly hit several times. Also no regard by some with observing one way roads within the park. No recycling in park but dumpsters for trash available. But to sum up, park remains very good value when visiting the amusement park, the casino next door, or the greater Des Moines area. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This is an older heavily used campground. The rate reflects the state fair rate. Hook ups worked fine. Staff nice, gave us very good advice how to go to fair using a park and ride site. Most campers are here for good clean family fun and are on vacation to amusement park next door. Quiet place, would stay again if in the area. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We used Adventureland CG while visiting friends in the Des Moines area. Signage directing you to the entrance not very clear for those unfamiliar with the area. As others have said, clearly an older park but grounds are well-kept. Bath facilities also older but generally clean. Interior roads can be a bit confusing to navigate; circular "clusters" of sites actually make it quite easy to place your rig although sites themselves are not all that big and parking of your tow vehicle could be awkward. Most sites are paved, nearly level and have a single tree to provide some shade. Food, fuel and supplies readily available at retailers in the area. Check in was easy but the staffer neglected to tell us about the WiFi and did not provide the code - I had to ask the next day. Adventureland served our purposes and we would stay here again. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Take in the Iowa state capital building tour - one of the nicest and most ornate capital building in the country. Art park downtown is interesting. For an outstanding food experience stop at the Hy-Vee (sp?), also downtown.

The park had a few trees (maybe every other site), and the roads were paved with asphalt that was cracking and not in very good condition, but maneuvering my 36' DP motorhome was easy. Sites were on the narrow side, some thin grass all around (grass is nice when you have dogs). Power connection was 50/30/20 and the power pole & sockets were in good condition. There was no cable TV. Water & sewer connections were fine, as was the water pressure, and the sewer connection point was at ground level (nothing worse than a sewer pipe that's 8 inches above ground!). The RV parking pad was crumbling asphalt. The WiFi connection was good, and but was so slow it was basically useless. We don't use restrooms, showers or pools, so we can't render an opinion on those items. There were 2 dog park for our 4 footed friends (we travel with 3 golden retrievers). The price was average to slightly high considering aging condition of some of the facilities. We did not notice significant road noise, but noise like that doesn't bother us anyway. We would rate this park as 6 out of 10. We might stay here again if in the area. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

The park was very attentive - they had me booked in too small of a site (30 amp back-in) - the check-in guy noticed this and worked to find a larger site with 50 amp because he felt we would be more comfortable in a larger site. They also came out promptly the next morning and cut down a tree branch hanging too low on the RV. The restrooms were nothing special - below average and it seems we stopped by just before cleaning - very messy with dead bugs all over. They probably need more frequent cleaning for a better grade. Nice amount of trees and grass by all sites. Most of the park is occupied by workampers for Adventureland. Nice people - we would stay here again. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

Very busy (it serves a large amusement park) and starting to look a little dated but overall a good park. Signage is horrible, however. From the street entry to site location in the park, it is hard to find what you are looking for. Two u-turns later, we found our assigned parking spot. Easy for us to do, but not for everyone. Sites are level but the paving may be heavily cracked. Many sewer connections are elevated and present problems dumping. Dog parks (one for small breeds, one for the rest) are new and in excellent condition. They are underused as dog waste can be found in other open areas. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

This was a stopover spot for us and satisfied what we needed. This would not be a destination place for us as we prefer some place less congested. This would be a perfect place for those who are wanting activity as it has the amusement park on one side, the casino on the other and movies across the way. This place was packed with campers as it was the July 4th weekend holiday which is understandable. With all being said we would still stay here as a stopover as it was easy check in and easy in and out. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

They are very short of signs, staff, and direction if you have to check in at the registration desk. Hopefully this will not be an issue more in season. We were charged the full boat, but most of the facilities were not yet available. The showers were specifically lacking in privacy, but there was hot water after a while. Most others there were work campers for the resort that had not yet opened. There may be discounts available if you get to check in with someone that knows how to work the camp ground side. My clerk did not know or if did, he left it off the invoice. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

We only stayed one night. When we got there (after having called and been told "yes"), we were told there were no pull-throughs. Enter the wonderful employee who came charging up in his golf cart to the rescue by telling us he didn't know what he was thinking, but a work camper just left and we could have their spot! Had to run to get a part we didn't have, came back and then found that delivery dinner wasn't going to work. All in all, however, this was a successful stay, the grounds are clean and Michael will forever remain in our "saved the day" memories! We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Unless you want to undo your car from a tow dolly in order to go eat, then make sure you stop and eat before you arrive. If you need or want delivery, there is a choice of Jimmy John's (who can only deliver to the gate/office), or Domino's if you want pizza. We were told those were the only two who delivered to the park. We chose to unhook from the site and go over to Max's diner which is part of a truck stop.

Stayed here as workampers for Adventureland amusement park May, June, and July. Had a pull-thru near one of the laundries. Utilities placed in sites well and all worked well. Water very good out of tap with just your normal water filter on it. Very clean and well kept. The mowing and triming crew, who were also workampers, knew their business and were careful around the rigs. One of the nicest large parks near a major city we have stayed in, with all the shopping and eating places you would want near by. Also able to have HDT and 5er in the pull thru site with room to spare. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed here one night while visiting family. The campground adjoins Adventureland Amusement Park, a popular Des Moines area park. A trolley runs from the campground to the park. Facilities in the park (bathrooms, access roads) are due for updating but were satisfactory. Newer dog runs were close to our side of the campground and were very convenient. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

Exceptionally clean park with lots of attendants throughout our weekend stay. Plenty of open space to walk our dog. We were attending a convention, so the park being next door to the convention center made it very easy to let our dog out often enough for her comfort. (Now if she'd just been that cooperative getting back in the coach!)

We were right next to a large open area so there was plenty of room to walk her and not be bothered by other dogs (room for 4-5 dogs to exercise without interfering with each other). Almost all spaces appeared to have reasonably tall shade trees (most appeared to be a bit above the height of the coaches/trailers). Each site seemed to have a picnic table and fire pit.

We stayed in the J loop on the perimeter of the park. These parking loops were really well-designed to pull in past your space and back straight in with no difficulty. If pulling a dolly, recommend asking for a 50-60' space. We had a 35-40' space that was just long enough for our motorhome plus a car. Had we towed a vehicle, there would not have been room for a dolly or trailer.

With the amusement park next door, we expected to hear lots of noise, but we didn't! There is a border of tall trees between the park and the amusement park that dampened almost all the noise and what we heard sounded distant. Easy access to the casino and convention center.

Rated Satisfactory on service for three reasons: the attendant who greeted us was rather gruff in response to my query about senior or military discounts. ("We don't have to with the casino and amusement park next door.") There appeared to be no convenience store in the park itself, and internet service was awful. The attendant told me they hadn't upgraded the service in 6 years. I believe it; we regularly had difficulty getting online, often got bumped offline, and could not get a signal after 11:00 p.m.

Fix the internet and provide a small convenience store and this would be a superior place to stay. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

1. AJ's Steak House in Casino/Racetrack: superior food and service.

2. Barbeque restaurant across from entrance is regional chain with good reputation.

3. Hilltop Restaurant (about 6 miles away): really good pizza and best onion rings I've ever had!

4. Closest Wal-mart is about 3 miles away (south on Prairie Meadows Dr., runs between park and the casino/convention center).

5. Security guards at park entrance sometimes, so display your access pass (mirror hangar).

Stayed here for just an overnight. We had a pull in blackout site. Had an odd layout, but it was fairly quiet and seemed as though we had seasonals around us. Had a dog park and a nice pool. Arrived during a heavy storm and found hook ups basically under water, looked at other sites to try and change but found the same, our main reason here was to visit the theme park so after the water soaked into the ground things worked out. Long pull thru but not real level, seems sites are getting upgraded to concrete but looks like it will take a while. Trolley to park was nice wristbands needed worn to ride trolly and enter the pool area. We camped at Adventureland Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
