Not a big rig friendly place. Tight access roads, difficult back in spots for big rigs. There are several other COE on the lake like Trailwater West and Trailwater Fast that are big rig friendly and a nice relaxing area. The park itself is very nice. Well maintained, park staff very accommodating and park host friendly. Beach access is nice but lots of power boats screaming up and down the lake that can be heard for miles. Very family orientated with lots of kids running around having fun. Very little breeze can get into the camp so when everybody has their camp fits going, even at 95°, the smoky haze just lingers and lingers, which I could imagine affects those with breathing issues. 8 out of 10 just because of the tight turns for big rigs. If you have a average travel trailer, you'll love I'm sure. More that 35 foot, check out the Trailwater East or West. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice COE park with plenty of shade except for sites right on the lake. We had site 308, a FHU site. The FHU sites were fairly level, and the outer ring backs up to a fence that protects the sewage pond (buyer beware on hot summer days ;) ), the road thru the FHU sites is a little on the narrow side. Site 308 has a luxury none of the other FHU site have: a pool EVERY TIME IT RAINS! ;). Entrance to the park is VERY STEEP (our guess is about a 10% grade), but not very long, with lots of tight curves, and a narrow road. There is a bike route just outside of the entrance road to the park, but the narrow road and hills of the entrance road make it not for the faint of heart. Be aware that this is a college town area and Iowans seem to enjoy tailgating, so use caution when driving and drive very defensively. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Travel Trailer.

Great WFBP (Vegan) restaurant in Iowa City called the Trumpet Blossom that is unique and has good food, and they know how to prepare plant based dishes WIHOUT drowning them in oil. Very healthy and delicious meals. ONLY one we found in the whole state to date.

We thought we had reserved a FHU site but turns out it was power only - not a problem for a two night stay. The site was pull-thru, level and satellite reception was fine. Roads are paved and easy to negotiate. You should be aware that the check-in time is 4:00 pm. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Motorhome.

The site was level with central hook ups. The water and sewer were literally right next to each other. The entrance road is winding and steep in places, but it is all paved. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed at a 50 amp FHU site. Nice level pad with plenty of room. Nice bike trails nearby. Park is close to any store you want. Overall the park was okay. The road in to the campground was challenging with steep hills and turns including one huge hill at the entrance! We had a good time. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Motorhome.

We were lucky enough to get a site here after we had to leave Lake MacBride Campground because of a tight turn around. This area is beautiful. The sites are large and the park is quiet and clean. There are numerous trails for walking and biking. There was easy access to the lake in several areas. This park is big rig friendly and the check out is 5:00 pm! First park I have been to with a 5:00 check out. Check in is at 6 so you need to know that if you arrive early. Lots of shade trees. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Motorhome.

There is a lot more to this campground and surrounding area than we imagined! We only were able to stay one night as we drove through Iowa on our way home to Ohio. Had we known about all there is to do we would have stayed longer! The campground is just one part of a large waterway and park complex. The waterfront, beach, boating areas and overall area gave things a real resort feel. Our site, which included full hook-ups and 50amp service, was easy to find and easy to access. The park was very full and there was a lot going on with groups and families but things settled down in the evening and it was very quiet overnight. Overall a very nice stay and one we would gladly repeat. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Motorhome.

The road coming into the campground was a bit of a challenge for our 36' motorhome. It was hilly with some sharp turns. It was ultimately not a problem but be prepared when you arrive.

Neat very large COE park, which has some sites which are walk-up only and cannot be reserved, but this park fills up, so reservations or timely arrival is recommended. We came in on a Friday late afternoon and were expected to find it full, but they had just opened the group areas to individuals to we found a spot that was level for our truck camper and were set for the weekend. Folks doing the check-in were pleasant and with a 50% discount for the same Golden pass you use at the National Parks, it meant we were staying for $10.00 a night so this was a super bargain. The sites are all electric only and ours was 30 amp which was all we needed. Lots of folks who camp here bring their boats as this campground is on the lake, although only a few sites are really right down next to the water. The stores for supplies was a good drive away so come in with a full fridge. The dump station is also a ways from some sites, so come in with empty dump and full water tanks. In addition to boating, this campground also has a small sandy beach for swimming, a good walk from many of the sites, but the entire park is nicely maintained. The shower set-up is weird except in the sections closest to the water where they all have their own entrances. In the one we used there are two side-by-side shower stalls entered to a common area by a swinging door. The problem is some folks feel the need for privacy and lock the door to the common area meaning there are two stalls, but only one person at a time using them. Not the best use of space or time. Water sports are the dominate play at this campground, but some folks were biking, and we did not take time to explore the entire area. Overall we like this park and would stay again without hesitation. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Truck Camper.

This is another great COE park that is very popular on weekends. Our site was a little tight and very close to the road, but we managed. There are plenty of much nicer and larger sites, but we had reserved sight unseen. Now that we have been there we would look at sites around #120 area. There is a very nice beach and boat ramp, and boat rentals nearby. Beautiful drive into park, a bit twisty, but no problem even pulling a big trailer. Definitely a family oriented place. We will likely return. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Travel Trailer.

It's difficult to find much wrong with a $13 rate for full hookups at a lovely park on a lake. The roads are asphalt; the full hookup pads are concrete and ours wave quite level. The trees hadn't yet leafed out fully so we had no problems getting satellite, but it you pick your site carefully you should be OK even later in the season. We were there early in the week and the place was nearly deserted, but they tell us it will be full this weekend. The comment in a previous review that the full hookup sites are taken by "long term residents" is totally wrong; the long term people are workampers and they aren't in the spots that the public can stay in. Also the construction that must have been on the bridge last year has all been completed so the access to the park is easy. Except for the ~2mile access road into the park which is winding and hilly. Just drive slowly and you'll be fine. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Even though the directions to the park are provided from I-380 it can easily be accessed from Iowa route 1 directly off of I-80. That approach avoids the few blocks of "city traffic" that you have to drive through using the other approach. Both approaches are easy, though, just take the one that is more convenient for your direction of travel.

Sugar Bottom Campground is located on the shore and hills above Coralville Lake and is popular for camping, hiking, biking, boating, swimming, fishing and picnicking. The large campground offers around 20 tent campsites, 30 group sites and over 200 single RV sites. There are 10 full hookups with concrete pads, about 10 water/electric sites with gravel pads with the rest being gravel electric-only sites. Most gravel sites were not level. Lots of sites had shade and some are along the lake. Be aware there's a long paved lane back to the campsites but it is very hilly and windy.

About half the sites are first come, first serve with the rest reservable on Reserve America CCC. You can get a 50% discount if you have a National Parks Senior/Golden Age Lifetime Pass. See RA's website for fees, maps, rules, directions, etc. There seemed to be at least 10 RV sites reserved for park staff so the campground was well maintained.

The best facilities were the 3 modern restroom/shower buildings each with six individual/private rooms. Each room had a locking door, shower with hot water, toilet, sink, mirror, hand-drier, sky-lite. There were several drinking fountains around the campsites, a boat ramp, beach, 2 dump stations, fish cleaning stations, a play ground, picnic shelters, etc. No wifi. The campground was quiet during our mid-week stay. We camped at Sugar Bottom COE in a Motorhome.
