We've taken a trip to the cabins at Backbone State Park for the last 5 years now. During the winter, the minimum stay is only 2 days. So, this makes for a perfect weekend. It's close enough that we can leave after work on Friday. And it's far enough north that they'll have a little more snow. We stayed in a deluxe cabin which includes two restrooms, a full kitchen, and sleeping space for 9. We spent our two days hiking, sledding, and ice fishing.

The cabins were clean and well cared for, convenient within the park to the facilities, and fully functional. We camped at Backbone State Park in a Cabin.

Date of Stay: April, 2016 - $14.00
Overall Rating:

The campground loops and maneuvering to get into the sites can be a bit challenging, but the campground was very nice. There is a nice lake, and the hiking trail around it was very enjoyable. All of the sites are electric only, which limits stays to a couple of days. Most have 30 amp only as well. During the summer they rent paddle boats, canoes, and such and operate a snack bar. There are a lot of trees, but most sites should be able to get satellite reception. Parking spurs are gravel. Cell service was good with Verizon. Dump station on site. We camped at Backbone State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

The hike around the lake is 6 or so miles long and worth the effort. Big rigs beware of attempting to drive through the center of the park, you may need to go around. There are signs warning large rigs to go around.

Overall Rating:

This park was gorgeous! So we spent all our time in the South Lake Campground. There were very few people there, lots of empty space. Super friendly park ranger helped us get checked in and camp hosts also were very friendly and brought us free firewood. Site #4 was well located, in the center of the park, not far from the bathrooms, playground, etc. There is a lovely little trail in the forest that goes from the campground down to the lake. At the bottom there is a fishing pier, picnic table, dam. Older kids can do the walk around the bottom of the lake to go to the concession stand and boat house. At spot #4, if you bring a 100ft hose, you can connect to the water source to fill up without having to break camp. The site wasn't totally flat and did require some leveling. This was a great camping experience and we're glad we went. The boys had a blast! The Six Pine Campground is in the northern end of the park and is tent camping only, no electricity. We camped at Backbone State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

To get to the South Lake campground, you go through the town of Dundee if you're approaching from the west. There are *no* stores in Dundee. It's a precious picturesque little place though. However, if you need groceries before you go in, you'll need to go through Strawberry Point which is significantly bigger, has stores, etc.

Great park. Nice hiking trails. Our site had a nice gravel pad, but needed to use several blocks to level. We camped at Backbone State Park in a Travel Trailer.
