Date of Stay: July, 2016 - $40.00
Overall Rating:

Picked this as just as a spot to get off the road 4th of July weekend, we had reservations in Colorado on the 5th.

Nice older park with mature trees - forget about using your satellite dish. Owners very nice and helpful. Trees are well trimmed and no interference with a big rig on the roads. Roads look tight coming in, but it is doable.

Hilly with narrow sites. Most sites are long enough, but RV's are very close side to side in most areas. Our site was wide open on the right side, probably five feet from the trailer on our left! Plenty of pull throughs.

This was one of the quieter places we have ever stayed! Even on a holiday weekend. Lots of families and kids, but not a lot of noise even during the day and dead quiet after 10 PM. Quite a few tent campers scattered through the park.

Unlike some other reviewers we did not hear anything other than a handful of pops from the skeet range.

Most sites have full hookups, we moved to one without sewer to try to get satellite to work, no luck. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

My husband and I stayed at Timberline Campground in Waukee IA in July 2016. The check-in process was quick and efficient, with a friendly staff person helping me. The park is very clean and the sites were large enough for our 34-foot fifth wheel, although they are a bit close together, but still maneuverable. We stayed on Lot 50, which is a pull-through site with a level gravel pad. We stayed here to be close to Raccoon River Sports Complex in Des Moines, which was only 15 minutes away. We would stay at Timberline again. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Pull thrus for big rig not easy getting in. Or getting out. You also have to unhook tow. They charge a fee for credit card use. Trying to use the dump station, however people park their vehicles in the way, making a turn very hard without damaging your rig, or a big tree. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Motorhome.

Clean & quiet, far enough off the freeway there is no noise.

Looks like it is busy and crowded on weekends but we were there on a weekday.

We'd certainly stay there again. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This campground is beautiful with nice mature trees providing a lot of shade on a hot July day! Grounds sit inside a section of land, well off the beaten path and free of road noise. Still close enough to the city to find shopping, groceries, fuel and dining choices. Grounds were well maintained and if needed, staff was available to show you to your site. We did have to back our tow vehicle in at an angle to get off interior road. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Wake, Iowa is a suburb of Des Moines, Iowa where there is everything and anything you would want to do. It was raining the days we were here so much of our sightseeing happened from a vehicle. The capitol building, historical homes, etc.

Pokémon.go had just started and we saw many, many, many people strolling around looking at their phones, it was hysterical to see, and weird all at the same time.

Very pretty campground! Lots of mature trees, well trimmed so as not to interfere with rigs. In the 90+ heat, the shade was very welcome.

It is far enough off the road that there is absolutely no road noise.

They have a fenced dog off-leash area.

The interior roads are a bit narrow. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Park is North off I-40 but watch carefully for your right turn up the road. The park is hilly and sites are not all level. Our WIFI worked well. There are very wooded areas where satellite probably wouldn't work. Other areas are clear. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Motorhome.

Restrooms not cleaned daily. Skeet Range next door started shooting @ 10 AM on Sunday. Trailers parked together even when there are plenty of sites to choose from. Jack and Jill pull-throughs, so only one trailer can use its awning at a time and two fire rings between trailers. I could see at least 20 fires from my campsite. Air very heavy with smoke after dark. Tent sites not level. My site had a truck in it and I had to find the owner two sites over drinking beer and ask him to move from my pad. Not too noisy except for the gun fire. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed for one night in a pop-up camper. The sites were so cramped there wasn't space for a picnic table between our pop-up and the one next to us unless we didn't need to open our door. There were a ton of people camping who partied loudly and late, without the hosts saying anything. The bathrooms were clean when we arrived but filthy in the morning. The toilet stalls are so small my knees hit the doors. The campground host was nice and helpful, but we would not stay here again due to the party environment. If we had no choice but to stay again, I would pick a 50 amp loop far from the bathroom/pool area. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Tent Trailer.

Park is well shaded with average maintained gravel roads and sites. Our site was a bit hilly and not level, as well as many of the other sites. The park is rather tight in spots. The way they told me to get our was impossible for my 39 ft 5th wheel. But, I did find another route out. With this said, I would stay again just get a different site. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

From the unfriendliness of the office to the soggy cow pasture like site we were put on to the constant sounds of the gun range right at the back of the campground. The guns went off constantly until 6:30 that night and started back up at 8:30 the next morning! It was horrible! We have no issues with guns but certainly weren't in the mood at a campground for that. The reviews it is given was totally not what we got. Would never recommend this place. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Motorhome.

Our experience has not been as positive as others who have stayed here. I believe that the particular site assigned, as well as the length of time one stays, makes a significant difference in the quality of the site. Once we indicated that we were staying just overnight, and then on our way, no full hookups were available. Water and electric only. A dump station is present on the campground. However, our site, #81, is raised, narrow and uneven, from front to back as well as from side to side. Difficult to get our coach leveled. A positive note is that the site is out in the open, allowing our satellite dish to lock on to a signal. I doubt that we would return unless nothing else was available. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Motorhome.

Although this park gets very high marks from Good Sam, I'm not sure they are quite that high. The cleanliness of the central bathrooms is sketchy; although, the shower had good water pressure and was clean. The first site I was in (#3) was very narrow and sloped off steeply at the back. I was barely able to get my 32' rig to fit without excessive leveling assistance. Then I had to park my toad on that downward slope. The sites are quite narrow. I had to unhook before pulling in, even though sites are advertised as pull through. The sites in the row behind #3 appear to be fine. They are longer and more level. Ask for 16-20. Those appear to be the big rig sites they assign for FHU. There was another area for FHU up on the hill, but again those sites were very close together and not very long. WiFi was good. Pool was clean. It was nice and quiet until the tent campers came in on the weekend (Fri and Sat), and then the 10pm quiet time was not enforced. Loud noises until 12:30am. So it was a nice, pretty park--just not a 9, IMO. We camped at Timberline Campground in a Motorhome.
