This was a great find! Close to metro Des Moines but still had the state park feel with lots of trees, peaceful, and nature. Park and sites were paved. Sites are either electric 50/30/20 ($14) or full hookups ($17) with fire rings & picnic tables at each site. They have bathrooms, but no showers. It does have potable water and a dump, but might be a little tight for larger rigs. Some sites are smaller than others. And some sites are reservable. Highly recommend reservations in summer! There are additional fees are for reservations, $4 online or $8 by phone, but there was not an additional fee for entry to the State Park. We loved this little gem! We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a great value at $14 for 50 amps and w/s. The roads are narrow and tight for big rigs and due to this fact there is a lot of mud and ruts from people driving on the grass. It is very quiet with lots of trees - no satellite reception. Concrete pad with large concrete patio. Roads getting here from 63rd St are a little confusing as the names of the streets have changed. Beware of overhanging trees on Walnut Woods Dr. They beat the top of our rig as we passed. No charge to enter state park. We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Motorhome.

What a great campground, huge sites and lots of grass. Had a great stay right off the freeway. Can't believe anyone would pay to stay in a private campground when this is so close with such a great price. We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Beautiful park, much loved by locals. Reservations are taken and needed in the summer. There are 13 spots with electric ($14) and 8 full hook-ups ($17), all paved concrete pads. Most are small, so big rigs would definitely need to reserve. Our spot, 19, was small, but we still needed an extension cord to reach the electric. Otherwise a lovely park, conveniently located, great value. Nice hiking trail and a bird blind for excellent bird-watching. We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Shady, saw several deer, bird blind, trails, clean restrooms with some bugs. Tall trees in the campground that can be troublesome when getting in and out. Muddy in spots. Stayed at site 2, water leaked and created a swamp around the water outlet. If you want to stay on the weekend, you probably need to make an advance reservation. We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This  was a great campground! Within 15 minutes of downtown Des Moines. Lots of great birding, and beautiful wooded area. Cement pads, full hook-ups, great TV reception, off and on Verizon MiFi (maybe it was our card), and the Park Ranger couldn't have been nicer. Never met the camp host. They do have a dump station and sites with just electric.  All in all a nice place to use as a base camp for Des Moines and surrounding areas.  We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Motorhome.

This is the first rating on this park. This is a jewel of campground just outside of Des Moines. 8 of the 23 sites are full hook up, and the other 13 have 50 amp electric. There are modern restrooms but no showers available. All of the pads are cement and have large patios attached. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring. The roads are all asphalt. Most sites are shaded with large mature Walnut trees. Satellite may be tricky here, but we had good signal with our Verizon air card. There is no WI-Fi offered. The $16 was for a electric only site, the full hook ups are a few dollars more. The address of the park is 3155 Walnut Woods Drive, West Des Moines, IA 50265 We camped at Walnut Woods State Park in a Motorhome.
