12 Parks near Winterset, Iowa
Jun 2015 - $15.00
A good place to stay with full hookup sites. The site was fairly level and was able to level up with no difficulty. The hookups were adequate and there is a Verizon tower on the grounds. A great place to camp when the other campgrounds in Winterset are full. There is a sign stating that the campground is closed July 6-20 for the county fair. That date would vary some year to year. We definitely would stay here again. - Kent and Margaret
Jun 2016 - $21.00
We stayed 4 nights. Great park, gravel and cement pads. We loved the park, quiet and beautiful surroundings, wild life and trees. It is clean, the hosts were very friendly and helpful. - gooneybird
Jul 2015 - $20.00
Loved this park, we stayed in full sun for our sat dish and all utilities worked great. Very quiet and peaceful. Close to the town of Wintersett and all the covered bridges. - michelle 17
Jun 2015 - $18.00
Arriving at the park's main North entrance, we pulled through the rock tunnel with ease. NOTE 12-1/2' height limit here, taller RVs should use the 4 mile gravel road entrance on the park's East side.
We met up with a friend of ours, and stayed in the shady back-in spots. Another friend opted to stay in the wide open full-sun campground loop that has pull-through concrete pads and good satellite reception. All the campground roads are gravel. Our almost-level gravel site was well spaced with a picnic table. The 30 amp electricity was nice for running our air conditioner. The water spigots are located between sites and have a "Y" for both trailers to use at the same time. We did have afternoon sun on our patio side, while sites across the road had morning sun on their doors. A storm the day before left the sites covered with small branches, which we used as kindling for our campfire.
The park's ford was washed out from the rain, so we did not wade or play in the water. The other roads were open for walking.
Verizon MiFi worked some times during the day - OK by me.
We will return. - AluminumCloud

We called ahead to ask about the campground and reserve a site. No reservations accepted, unless you are bringing a large group or coming for the weekend. OK, so we asked how full the campground was currently and were told there were plenty of sites just go in and pick one, fill out the paperwork and deposit it and payment at the self service kiosk. We asked if the park could handle a 45' motorhome and were told no problem the sites are all 70 feet.
The park has 34 camp sites with 20/30/50 provided at every site: 22 sites have full hookups (E/W/S), 11 have E/W only and 1 has E only. All sites are back in and according to the campground brochure they are 15' X 50', there is no extra parking anywhere. We arrived at 12:30 PM on a Tuesday, only 1 FHU site was available for our week in Winterset as the site reservations were not until June 28 according to the sign. Most sites were reserved beginning the next day, Wed, or Friday. Come in prepared to go somewhere else if the no-reservation system is working like it did for us.
With that being said, this is a great little park! Quiet right on the south east side of town. The city park it is attached to is a wonderful place to walk, bicycle, have a picnic and enjoy nature. It is a quick drive to visit the "Bridges of Madison County" and the John Wayne Birthplace and Museum. - Harley Oma
Jun 2015 - $17.00
This city park campground is a real gem; the city park service that administers this campground is a real credit to their profession. As city campgrounds go, this one should be rated an 11! The full hookups were adequate; the water faucet is placed between two spaces so make sure you come here with more than a 25 foot fresh water hose. The only improvements that could make the park absolutely perfect would be to add more gravel to areas that can become muddy when heavy rains come and the park should add co-mingled recycling. You really do need to call ahead if you wish to stay on a weekend or holiday during the prime spring and summer season. There are lots of things to see and do in the area; so, plan to stay a while if you can. We would definitely stay here again. - Kent and Margaret
Aug 2014 - $19.00
This city park is very clean, well-maintained, and quiet. The gravel road loops around to all the gravel back-in sites. Sites are rather wide, as the trailers are stagger-parked on each side of the loop. Restrooms were clean with 2 shower stalls that were spotless. As the county seat of Madison County, the town's small businesses are alive and well - many within a longer walk around the town square. Right at the park is a fun corn maze, and a 1-mile trail to historic stone Clark Tower. Good Verizon phone and MiFi connections. - AluminumCloud
Jul 2016 - $40.00
We stayed here for 2 nights while visiting family members who live in West Des Moines. The campground was having a "Christmas in July" fest on that Saturday. Activities were of a good variety and appeared well-planned and attended. The park could use a little more handy pet walk space on the north side. - gbburgess
Jul 2016 - $40.00
This is nice KOA 1.5 miles off the I-80 which is convenient and easy to find. Kudos to the owners for more road signage then most KOAs. Sites are gravel/grass and interior roads are gravel. Typical of most midwest KOAs they use white rock that when driven on breaks down and turns to a white powdery dust, so it can get dusty. We were escorted to our site, which was long enough for 5'er and PU parked directly in front. The site was also spacious, lots of room on both sides. The park has a pool (smaller), we didn't use, doggy areas (fenced), didn't use either, and a pond (didn't use) but saw a couple of paddle boats on it. WiFi was the best we've had in many many KOAs! This KOA doesn't have dumpsters on site, and so you place your garbage out by your site and they pick it up. We have to say another big kudos to that practice because of the non-dumpsters on site, it GREATLY lessened the flies and garbage smells that tend to hang out on summer days. We stayed here for a couple of nights and enjoyed our stay. - ErinandCorbin
Jun 2016 - $46.00
Really enjoyed our overnight here. A couple small fenced in areas for the dogs was nice. Looks like a lot for kids to do as we saw a lot of them running around having fun. Everyone we talked to was in a good mood and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Makes for a fun place to stay.
Owners were very helpful and really wanted to make sure you were happy. Anytime we are in the area looking for an overnight, this will be the stop. Also can see doing a long weekend. It is about 250 miles from us but would be worth it if we can get the grand kids to come with. - Elkhounds
Jul 2008 - $16.00
Way off the interstate, poorly marked, no one at the check in station. Note on drop box not to use because someone is stealing the money! We were dead tired, got set up and ready for bed, when there was a knock on the door and the attendant wanted their money. Luckily we stayed only one night (well 4 hours). Would not stay here again. - BIGBUBBA1959
Jul 2016 - $40.00
Very quiet, shady. Close to town but in rural area. - LindaGarrard
Jul 2016 - $40.00
This campground is beautiful with nice mature trees providing a lot of shade on a hot July day! Grounds sit inside a section of land, well off the beaten path and free of road noise. Still close enough to the city to find shopping, groceries, fuel and dining choices. Grounds were well maintained and if needed, staff was available to show you to your site. We did have to back our tow vehicle in at an angle to get off interior road. - MamaLyn
Jul 2016 - $42.00
Clean & quiet, far enough off the freeway there is no noise.
Looks like it is busy and crowded on weekends but we were there on a weekday.
We'd certainly stay there again. - wetterwashington
Aug 2013 - $15.00
This is a nice little public park for an overnight stay. It is very quiet. You register at a box as you drive in (must pay within an hour of arrival) once you pick your site. There is no dump station. - luckydog
Apr 2016 - $14.00
What a treat. Full hook-ups, lovely peace and quiet, the Raccoon River and tons of bird species nearby. - Mrs.Picky
Nov 2015 - $14.00
This campground is a gem--beautiful sites with concrete pads and patios. Some have full hookups. Close to Des Moines. I noticed another reviewer said to be careful of the low hanging branches on Walnut Woods Drive, but they must have been trimmed because we did not have a problem. I would recommend this campground highly to anyone. Very big rig friendly. - kwikkeys10
Aug 2015 - $14.00
This is a great value at $14 for 50 amps and w/s. The roads are narrow and tight for big rigs and due to this fact there is a lot of mud and ruts from people driving on the grass. It is very quiet with lots of trees - no satellite reception. Concrete pad with large concrete patio. Roads getting here from 63rd St are a little confusing as the names of the streets have changed. Beware of overhanging trees on Walnut Woods Dr. They beat the top of our rig as we passed. No charge to enter state park. - Freedom Bus
Aug 2016 - $18.00
The roads and sites are very tight and not conducive for big rigs. We moved four different times to get a semi-level site which still maxed out our leveling system. Difficult to get satellite. Park people were nice. - The DnD Adventure
Sep 2013 - $16.00
This is a very nice, clean park which we really enjoyed. The sites are easy to get into and fairly spacious. The park is on a beautiful lake with many activities including hiking trails, fishing, boat rentals and swimming. We stayed here over labor day weekend and although the park was full, it didn't feel crowded. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. Will definitely stay here again when passing through. - User3145
Jun 2011 - $18.00
Plenty of room to hike and bike. Be careful on the upper camping area, the turns on the west side on very tight. Cutbacks have affected Iowa campgrounds as some of the picnic areas are not being mowed, just paths to and around them. - stetwood
Aug 2016 - $20.00
They are upgrading many sites. So there is some construction. Easy access to I35. We had great cable. We parked on a level concrete site. There is grass between most sites and small trees. They do offer service to and from the casino. We will definitely stay here again. - Full timer with dogs
Aug 2016 - $20.00
Stayed here for 9 days. Explored west & central Iowa. The roads are paved. Cement slabs at almost all sites. There is a casino with transportation provided. - TT543
Aug 2016 - $30.00
Spots here are long enough for our 40ft + tow. Valet service is not good at all. Will say their buffets are excellent. There was a lot of construction going on, new pads being poured. Glad to see improvements. We always stay here when traveling to Minnesota. Hope they keep improving, we enjoying stopping here, a little gambling and good food. - Travelin Jenkins
