Arriving at the park's main North entrance, we pulled through the rock tunnel with ease. NOTE 12-1/2' height limit here, taller RVs should use the 4 mile gravel road entrance on the park's East side.

We met up with a friend of ours, and stayed in the shady back-in spots. Another friend opted to stay in the wide open full-sun campground loop that has pull-through concrete pads and good satellite reception. All the campground roads are gravel. Our almost-level gravel site was well spaced with a picnic table. The 30 amp electricity was nice for running our air conditioner. The water spigots are located between sites and have a "Y" for both trailers to use at the same time. We did have afternoon sun on our patio side, while sites across the road had morning sun on their doors. A storm the day before left the sites covered with small branches, which we used as kindling for our campfire.

The park's ford was washed out from the rain, so we did not wade or play in the water. The other roads were open for walking.

Verizon MiFi worked some times during the day - OK by me.

We will return. We camped at Pammel Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Nearby, the town of Winterset is home to the John Wayne birthplace and new musuem. The town square is full of businesses, including the North Side Diner and the PBS TV famous Fons & Porter Love of Quilting shop. A small farmers market featuring local food is held Saturdays during the summer on the town square. Nearby are the Bridges of Madison County, but we did not see Clint Eastwood nor Meryl Streep.

I really wanted to stay at this park but was concerned about driving under the tunnel so we decided not go go here. However, we parked at a nearby campground and drove over to this park. Our 5th wheel would not fit under the tunnel to the entrance but there was another entrance however you would need directions to get there. You would also need to drive over a ford so if there was a lot of rain that entrance would probably not work. My suggestion is to call first before coming here. The park was very wooded and looked like there was a lot to do. We camped at Pammel Park in a Fifth Wheel.

For the price this Park is in our top 20 campgrounds of 137 visited within the last three years. The Park from reservation to actual stay was pleasant, quiet and soothing. The Park sits atop a lovely Ridge "Devils Backbone" approx. 1000+ feet. Although there are not many amenities here, the park is very clean, has large sites and is sound. The Park, Camp Hosts couples were amazingly friendly and accommodating. This park in not far from the town of Winterset, Iowa and birthplace Museum of John Wayne. Additionally the home county of the "Madison County Bridges" which is not far off I-80. We can assure you, your stay here will be most relaxing and comforting. We stayed for 4 days in our 5th Wheel. WE WILL RETURN HERE someday in passing thru the area for sure. Thank you Pammel Park, IA. We camped at Pammel Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Pretty park located right on the river with a small waterfall and across from a golf course. Easy in and out. It was very "buggy" so we spent most of our time in the rig. Only problem was with the showers. My wife used them and the water pooled around her feet and the mosquitoes swarmed her while showering! Definitely a problem. Previous reviews mention water available which we took to mean water hook-ups. But the water is available only at the dump station. At least it seems like that is the case. There was no signage telling us if the water there was potable or not, so we elected not to top off our tanks. Other than that, we would stay here again. We camped at Pammel Park in a Motorhome.

The park's north entrance has a beautiful stone tunnel. We need 11 feet to enter and we had lots of room. The east entrance is a gravel road, but with no tunnel. The campground as a couple camping areas. One area with mature trees has a couple rows of spots for RVs with medium spaces between the gravel pads. Nice place to hang out and have a campfire cookout. The second area is a more open area, parking in large circle with a grassy area with playground and area for football tossing, etc. Great ford in this State Park - walk or drive your truck or SUV across the water. You do not need to drive through the water to the campground. We spent about an hour wading in the water with our friends. Our dogs were so happy to be cooled by the water - swimming and wading. Many children were tubing and swimming. Downstream people were fishing on the sandbars. The hosts were very nice. We will go back soon. We camped at Pammel Park in a Travel Trailer.

Pammel Park is a former state park that is now ran by Madison County. The park is extremely beautiful area. It is situated next to the Middle River along a limestone backbone. The campground offers two choices of campsites one which we prefer is in the wooded area of the park, and the other are a more modern in the open with concrete pads. The RV sites offer electric and water hookups. A dump station is available. A great place to which you could tour the "Bridges of Madison County". The park features a ford across the river and a tunnel. The shower faculties were excellent. We camped at Pammel Park in a Fifth Wheel.
