This park is located about 30 minutes from Wichita. In a previous review, someone said it wasn't well marked if arriving from the west on the 400. I agree but we found it, no problem. I wasn't terribly impressed. The sites are spacious but there's a serious lack of toilets (we don't have one). A couple of vault toilets or port-a-potties would be nice. I also agree with the comment about confusion with the pricing. Apparently, the campsite price includes the $3.00 "admin" fee and if camping, you don't pay the $5.00 vehicle fee (all this according to the host). Quiet at night. Hubby said only one toilet in the men's bathroom had paper. Kansas State Parks really need to provide maps at the self pay stations! Not a terrible spot, but I wouldn't stay again. We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Travel Trailer.

Go to Central Standard Brewing in Wichita. Great beer and a tasty charcuterie board ("small" is $15.00).

Date of Stay: July, 2017 - $23.00
Overall Rating:

We camped in the Smarsh Creek area (site 46). The hosts were friendly and came around to collect money and issue camping permits. The weekend we visited was also the weekend for the county fair-held in the town of Cheney. So, as you can imagine the campground and lake were both pretty busy. As such, our choices for a site were pretty limited, but I'm happy with where we landed. The cost was a bit high - it is $23.00/night for 50 amp spaces, plus $5.00/day vehicle fee. The pad at our site was gravel/dirt and not very level. Had a fair amount of room width-wise, but was very spacious length-wise. (Really deep campsites in this area.) Had several trees to shade our camper, which was nice since the weather was in the high 90s. Other sites further down from us were not shaded at all, so I was glad we got the one we did. We had a fire ring, electric and water, but no sewer. At the back of the site, you will find the Smarsh Creek where there is very shallow, clear/cold water flowing. Lots of frogs for the littles to chase, as well as minnows, etc. - great place for them to cool off and have some fun. There is a bathroom very close by, although this particular one didn't have showers. The shower house was just a quick drive or bike ride around the creek to the other side, though. Showers were okay (not the best, but certainly not the worst), although no temp control-only pressure control. Also very nearby was a large shelter with picnic tables-great for a party or reunion. A dumpster was also in that area, so quick and easy to drop off garbage every night (but stinky!). There are multiple beaches on Cheney Lake and the water is typical lake water. Pets are allowed everywhere that I could see, except bathrooms. We took our large breed dog with us to swim in the lake, walk on the trails, etc. Speaking of trails, there are multiple hiking trails and even a bike trail or two. We will be back again soon, and this time I hope to stay on the beach! We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Nowhere in the park to buy fire wood or ice, and it appears that the store just across the street from the park entrance was only open on weekends. Might want to pick those items up before coming into the park. For beach camping (with direct access to the lake from your site), check out the elec/water sites by the marina or in the north loop. But be aware that the north loop is quite a hike to the bathrooms and shower house, if you need those amenities.

We camped here for one night in our vintage camper. The campsites in the North Loop are large, grassy pull-thru areas with electric and water. Dump station in Smarsh campground just down the road. The camp hosts were friendly and helpful, came around to collect our fees after we chose an unreserved site. Restrooms and showers just down the road at the marina were well-maintained and clean. Pleasant, friendly experience in a nice setting near the lake. We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Travel Trailer.

Walk down to the sailboat marina for nice views. Also, drive into day use area near entrance to marina for wildlife viewing. Bait shop at West Entrance to park has ice, groceries.

Date of Stay: November, 2015 - $19.00
Overall Rating:

Cheney State Park is located ~20-30 minutes from Wichita, yet is a world away in rural countryside quietude. Sites are large and mostly well spaced. We arrived in early November, and enjoyed warmer than average fall days that were around 70 for highs. The site hosts were very friendly and helpful. Before we arrived, we were advised by phone to go to the Smarsh campground as having water still turned on, which was the case. Unfortunately, there was no sewer hookup and even more surprisingly as there was a steady stream of campers, all bathrooms and shower facilities were completely closed for the season. There were several dump stations in the vicinity. A pleasant stay during the weekdays was tarnished somewhat during the weekend, where apparently extended family reunions on neighboring sites generated much noise and traffic. If the sites had sewer connections and bathrooms/showers had been open when we camped, this campground would have rated higher, similar to nice Corps of Engineers facilites (though this was Dam built with Bureau of Reclamation). We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

During the fall consider using your tank water to choose one of the less crowded sites nearer the lake. Check out the Spring Creek Nature Trail with an extensive boardwalk across forested wetlands.

Rate was $19.20 for an electric-only site. The sites are somewhat level and gravel. The water was not on and the restrooms were still locked but the power was on. The self check-in rates were confusing and we paid what appeared to be the correct rate for power only. The section we stayed in was on what looked like an arm extending out into the lake. I think we were the only campers in the entire park. Not sure why but maybe it is still considered winter, even though the temperature was 82. A nice overnight stay. We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Fifth Wheel.

We stopped here for one night in our motorhome so our review will be limited in scope. We are in the off season and had a large site with electric, facing the lake - all to ourselves! In season It is meant for two camping units. The water had been turned off for the winter. After driving around the park for some time due to the confusing signage, and equally confusing price structure we located a camp host who did not come out of his trailer to talk with us but was able to let us know where we could camp, and how much the fees were. After getting settled in, it was a nice, quiet restful place. We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We spent 75 nights here between April 1 and September 20. It's a great park to camp in even if it's just for overnight if you are passing through. My daily rate listed is a result of having an annual Kansas State Park camping permit, otherwise the daily rate is $18.00 a night and requires a $4.20 vehicle permit. We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Fifth Wheel.

What a find! We were desperate to find a place and we just happened on this park. The sites are huge! We had a view of the lake and beautiful prairie grass swept out forever on the side of our RV. It was quiet, it was beautiful, and well worth a destination. We were only able to stay one night but we hope to get back there soon. It's a few miles off the interstate, but well worth the drive. We camped at Cheney State Park, West Shore Area in a Motorhome.
