This is a very large state park divided up into several different campgrounds scattered around Eldorado Lake. If you're looking for full hook ups the options are Walnut River campground with 50 amp service (Eagle Pass section), or Bluestem campground with 30 amp service (Sunflower Meadow). We stayed in Sunflower recently. Our site had ample shade and a nice view of the lake. The grass was trimmed nicely when we arrived and then mowed again 5 days later. The best sites for shade in Sunflower loop are 39, 45, 48, 53. The sites are large, well spaced, and level. City of Eldorado is nearby for any shopping needs. Wichita is only 25 miles away. Verizon signal 2 to 3 bars 4g. OTA TV channels very minimal. There are some 50 amp sites in other camping loops without sewer hookups. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We arrived on a Sunday during the "busy" season before 5pm. No one was in the office, no paper maps just a map on the door that was very confusing. We did finally find our section, Eagle's Pass & spoke to the park host. We got to our site, #24 in loop 3. It is a full hook up site with a grill, firepit & table. There was cigarette butts & beer bottles all over the site. Very disappointing. We've been in other Kansas State Parks & this one wasn't up to par. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We arrived near dark in October pulling a pop up camper behind our motorcycle. The roads are very confusing, but the area was nice and private. There was no attendant to be found anywhere so we used the pay station with no problem. HOWEVER, beware some of the shower houses have NO roofs. This is a problem in cold weather or rain. Thankfully we looked at the shower/bath houses before we set up. We finally settled in Quail Run. After going to dinner and coming back, we headed to the shower house. The water was FRIGID! There is no excuse for that, I don't care what the season is. There was a fabulous sunset, and the place is nice. Check the shower house before you set up or pay the fees if you want a roof. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Tent Trailer.

I made the reservations through Reserve America, the online portal used for Kansas State Parks. Picked full hookups, 50-amp and dates. When I got the confirm email, I called the next day to ask: it says Standard Hookup...there IS sewer, yes? The answer was yes. Problem #1: we arrived after the office closed at 5:00, but we called ahead and the lady said it was okay, just see the camp host when we arrive. BUT, directions to the campground we reserved were non-existent. We drove around, finally finding it, which is problem #2 --- signage was horrible, facing the side, not the road so it was easily passed up. Problem #3: no sewer at site. Dump station not even close. We booked 3 nights on our way north, but will either switch sites or leave. Stayed at Bemis Creek....grassy (weedy) sites, needed mowing, very windy. Not one other soul here so it's pretty private is the only plus. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

There are many areas to this state park scattered around the lake, within the areas are multiple campgrounds. We sought out the Walnut River Area since we were told it blocks more wind. The campsites are a mix from primitive to full hook ups, first come-first served to reserveable, short term to long term. For as many options in camping, there are more in fees. There is a vehicle fee ($5/day), camping fee ($21 for E+W) and a transaction fee ($3). You can pay the flat fees or get a 14-day camping pass ($112.50) or a monthly camping fee ($225ish) and/or a year vehicle pass ($25). Ghez, so much work before even parking our rig. The woman at the booth was very pleasant to explain this all to us. We ended up in Big Oak campground which was nearly empty, very quiet, lots of big trees, on the river. We had a picnic table (out front) and fire ring and grill (out back?!) Loved the paved hiking trails since it was wet. If dry there were lots of dirt trails that I would have liked to explore. There is laundry, but it was very dirty. Like other reviewers mentioned, the showers were scary, relatively clean but no curtains. One opening had 3 showers in cluster...you'd have to see it to believe it. One of the toilets was on the ground, I assume in the middle of repair, but I didn't check in on the progress. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in the Walnut River area, overlooking the water. There were trees near the water, but none directly on or around our site, leaving us to use our awning for any shade or reprieve from the sun. The campsites were quite spacious and ours was pretty level, but others in the area looked extremely uneven. There weren't any concrete pads. The hook ups are conveniently located. The restrooms, however, were terrible. We have deemed this campground a two night max, as I wouldn't dare set foot in those showers. Truly disgusting, unclean and also no privacy whatsoever. As for the rest of the park, there is a lot to explore, the water is pretty and we enjoyed being there. Bike riding and hiking were great. If they would only fix those restrooms, this would be a great place to visit more often and for longer stays. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Tent Trailer.

We stayed in the Walnut River section, in full hookup sites along the river. Very nice spacious site with tons of shade. Great playground for the kids, caught lots of fish in the spillway/river area. Beach area is great, and there were folks kayaking in the pond where the beach is. The entire campground is very shady; a few sites do not have shade but they are rare. Awesome walking paths and hiking paths above the river. Great area for riding bikes. The lake dam is across the road, and a marina is available at another section of the state park not too far from the Walnut River section. Cabins are available in this campground also. Phone signal with Verizon is good, and you can get several OTA channels on basic antenna. El Dorado borders the park and there are groceries about 2 miles from the campground, and a Walmart a bit further away. We love this campground. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

If you go into El Dorado at lunch time, try out Jacob's Well. Awesome lunch spot with gourmet soups, salad, sandwiches. Wichita is about a 25 minute drive where you can visit Botanica, the Sedgwick County Zoo, shopping, museums.

Visited this park on a holiday weekend. Access roads were terrible for a motor home, lots of low branches and cars parked along and on the road. Stayed in walnut river section which is more forested, lots of open sites in other camping areas. Site was muddy, no real surface, and was not level at all. Good state park campground for Kansas, but lacking overall. No picnic table or fire ring at sites in this loop. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Motorhome.

The bath house was locked so we couldn't get in to take a shower - ended up showering in the motorhome. The grass had not been cut even though it was the Labor Day . It is ok for an overnight stay, but would not want to stay longer. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

We stayed in Walnut River, in the Big Oak section in a water/electric only site. The positives: able to reserve for sites online through the KDWP site, with many sites to choose from. Wonderful large fully shaded sites in the Big Oak section with a walking bridge over to the very nice sandy clean-water beach. The walking trails are nice sidewalks along the pretty wooded stream area. Utilities worked well, and though it was crowded on the weekend we found it to be pretty quiet. The negatives: the campground had quite a bit of litter probably from endless strong Kansas winds and the fact that state funding for maintenance has been cut. Also, the restroom/shower was quite awful. Very very dirty and needing attention. Next time we will for sure stay in a campsite with full hookups and avoid the showerhouse altogether. The shower house at the beach was a little better, and the new one by the playground was closed due to vandalism and need of repair. But we will definitely happily return to this campground. It's a great place to camp with wonderful shade. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We were the only one in the Quail Run loop for 3 nights. Lots of room per campsite, table, grill and fire pit. Space was pretty level -- only needed 2 levelers squares. Bath/Shower house was odd to me as this is the first I've seen with no ceiling over the small showers. It's just you and the sky! Showers are also small with no doors or curtains. Would not have used if others were camped and for this reason I will not come back although everything else was great. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This was the second Kansas State Park I've stayed at. I was in the Frontier loop. Again the park seems trashy. Bits of paper and trash around and the mowers run over the larger pieces of trash making a lot of small trash. I guess a "Premium" site is one that has sewer other wise there isn't much to make a site "Premium". There are a lot of construction workers in this loop. Evidently you can lease a site for 6 months. So much for the 14 and 28 day rule. This place is good for stopping for just a night or two. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The camp Ground Holst was very nice to talk too. The park was very quiet, nice big sites (back in's). I saw a lot of wild turkeys but not any deer. The park's roads were a little bumpy, but paved. According to the park Holst this state park area has the most camp sites of any state parks in the USA. You do have to pay a state user fee of $4.25 We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Motorhome.

We usually camp in Bluestem camping area of this state park, but this time chose the Walnut River camping area below the dam. We absolutely loved this campground. Most sites are along the river and heavily shaded. Many sites have full hook-ups. There is a swim beach and really nice new playground equipment. Cabins are also available. There are many very nice walking trails along the river and through the wooded areas. These trails are smooth cement and have lots of places along the way for fishing and benches for sitting. Very lovely area. So glad we chose to camp here. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park should really be reviewed as four separate parks since there are four, very different camping areas. We stayed at the Walnut River area since it was the only area with water available in late October. The sites at Walnut River range from water and electric only, to full hookups. There are spaces where you can stay two weeks and others where you can spend the season. Some of the spaces are level but many of them are very unlevel. There is obviously a lot of deferred maintenance with some electrical boxes taped with yellow caution tape. In many ways, it has more the feel of a county park than a state park. The campground could use some cleanup. There was quite a bit of trash around. One of the host sites was very trashed: never a good sign. As noted in earlier reviews, the payment system is very difficult to figure out. The sign at the front gate said no credit cards, debit cards, or out-of-state checks were acceptable. That turned out to be for entry only. Out-of-state checks were OK for camping. There is a self registration kiosk, but that was for entry payment only. We could not find the camp host. Another camper said she would come around later for payment, which she did. It would be nice to have a simple sign saying to take a site and someone would come around to collect. By the way, the host said they were going on a reservations system next year. There is a maximum security correctional facility about a mile from the campground, if that is an issue for you. There is also a tornado siren just across the street. This is an urban park with views of houses across the street. Having said that, the park was nice and quiet at night. We would stay here again but only for a night passing through. We camped at El Dorado State Park in a Motorhome.
