Overall Rating:

We stayed 3 nights (Labor Day) in CC10, with full hookups. Campsite was nice, level asphalt with concrete pad for picnic table. Fire ring present but bent and not level. Lots of space around the sites, my kids played soccer in the grass. Partially shady and down in a bowl so not much wind. Hookups as expected but sewer was a bit high and had a super large opening, our tubing adapter didn't make a tight seal. Campground amenities: very nice playground, adequate bathhouse, fish cleaning stations, dog refuse bags, laundry house, swimming beach, fishing dock... all nice and more than expected for a state park. Negatives: we lost water one night, no where in campground had water. There is no emergency number to call, no one at the park buildings, so we all just went without water. They should have an emergency contact number. Also, being a state park, and Labor Day, there was quite a bit of loud, rowdy groups, some shady characters with rifles (the rangers took care of that), and inconsiderate campers...but I guess you can get that anywhere. We live close and will certainly be back, maybe not on a holiday though! We camped at Elk City State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

Showing up without a reservation, two days before July 4th, we were concerned we might not find a spot, but there were plenty available. We ended up with a long, isolated pull-through. We purposely chose a site far from the lake because we like things quiet. The site was level, the hookups worked fine and the scenery was beautiful. The restrooms were a bit far from our site, but that was our own fault; we could have chosen a closer one. We opted to check in at the park office, rather than using the self check-in at the entrance and that worked out fine. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely return to this park. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Positives: 1) Quiet location away from busy roads. 2) Most sites on this loop were shaded; ours was one of the few sites without trees. 3) FHU sites with all utilities working well.

Negatives: 1) We were at the edge of the asphalt slab (our choice) and had to do significant side-to-side leveling.

We liked this park and location, although we would pick a different site with more trees the next time around. Most of the other sites have more trees and shade, so I don't recommend Site 7. We will stay here again. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This park has spacious sites with many different camping areas. There is a boat launch area, laundry facilities, showers, modern restrooms all within walking distance. We paid for a prime site and the only utilities were electric and water, so I don't know what they would call a site with sewer hookup. There is a 15 mph speed limit which no one seems to acknowledge, including the park workers. We watched one whiz by our site and throw out his cigarette butt. There is a beach advertised on Kansas state park website but it is totally unusable because the beach is made up of sharp gravel. If you tried to walk in the water you would sink into the clay bottom. When we are back in the area we might not stay here again only because of the beach. If you're in to hiking and boating it would be the perfect campground. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Stayed in Comfort Cove with full hook-ups. Very nice park next to Elk Lake. Seems most RVers in our loop were long term. Staff is friendly. Good hiking loops. NO road noise - almost got run over by a fast moving deer on the way to the trash station. Would stay extra days if we had time. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Most of the park has only electric and water hookups but we stayed in a small area with full hookups. The full hookup area roads and sites were paved. The park is around a small lake and away from noise! The night was very quiet. We wished we could have stayed for several days. Would definitely stay there again. There was no free wifi and no TV cable but all other utilities worked fine. We could only get 1 OTA TV station, Verizon cell phone worked fine. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

If coming into the park from highway 75 north of Independence, go west on a county road at the park sign. When you come into the park there will be a large sign at a T in the road, take a left at that sign for camping. The sign is mismarked and tells you to continue straight ahead to the camping areas and it is hard to get a big rig turned around. I let the camp staff know about the wrong marking, hopefully they will have changed the sign.

Caution if you are not sure of where to find this park, especially coming in from the north on highway 75. There is a brown sign indicating a turn, which we took, and ended up way out of our way. The park is really in Independence not Elk City. When we got to Independence in a round about way, followed a turn sign and came to a T with no indication of which way to go. Had to call twice for help. But, it is a very nice park with nice grass and shade, level well spaced sites. Nice lake. Just beware of the signage. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We were really impressed with this state park. First, bathrooms were clean with free hot showers. We came in on Wednesday and left on Friday. We were lucky to have a site in a protected area. The park manager was helpful and gave us radio stations to listen to for the weather was predicting a storm that night and a worse one the next day. We drove through the park and debated where to stay. We could have water front spots out on a massive lake, or another area that was is sun and grass, or another area that was away from the view but felt more protected. My husband really wanted on the waterfront, but safety won out. During the night we could hear the wind, but we did not feel it. When my husband took the dogs out for their walk in the morning, he went to the waterfront loop and discovered several trees uprooted including one over the site he wanted to camp in. Elk City no longer exists. It was a trading post in the 1860s-1880s. Now the address is Independence, KS. We will definitely keep this park on our must stay list. 4825 Squaw Creek Rd Independence, KS 67301 County/Counties: Montgomery GPS: N37 15.415 W95 46.487 We camped at Elk City State Park in a Motorhome.

Well maintained park. You have to pay a (one-time) registration fee and you have to pay to get Wi-Fi. They have about 30 pull thrus and a beautiful lake. There are some prime sites you can reserve, others first come. They have 50 amp. A section on this park called Comfort cove is open year-round with full service. We will come back. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We decided at the last minute to camp over the Memorial Day weekend, and this was the only campground for miles that had a spot open. We enjoyed our stay. This is a nice park with fun things for the family to do; there is a nice playground with play equipment, basketball court, tether ball, horseshoes, and volleyball. There are several hiking trails. There is also a small golf course and a frisbee golf course. The bathrooms were cleaned daily, and most of the time, hot showers were available. The lake is pretty. They have a designated swimming area. And the fireflies in Kansas are nothing like the lazy, yellow flashers we have in Oklahoma; they are large, fast, and filled the tree-tops like Christmas lights! We camped at Elk City State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Beautiful State Park with roomy sites. There are several sections to the park. We discovered an area almost empty on our walk around the park. The section on the lake was full. Very quiet at night. Dish worked well. Verizon Aircard worked well. Nice level, long spots. Cable TV and WiFi would have been a 10. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice campground. Heavy rain in the region, had the water high in the reservoir and some sites were underwater when we were there. Very nice staff, and the grounds are well kept. We were going to stay two nights and ended up staying four. You must have a vehicle permit to enter the park. That was an additional cost. Roads into the park are in very poor condition, but repaving was taking place, before the water had gotten high. They may have started work on them again by now. We will visit this park again. Stayed overnight on a Saturday night, with practically no one in our camp ground so it was very quiet. We had water and electric only as there are only eleven sewer sites and they were all filled. We stayed away from the lake campgrounds because of the very windy conditions that day and really enjoyed being back in the back of the park, so to speak. The showers were clean but be forewarned, state park showers can have cold water. Our water was warm but don't expect hot in a state park. A clean well cared for park. We will return when in the area again. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a very nice state park right on Elk Lake and seconds from Independence, KS and is one of the suggested parks for seasonal Amazon employees. The roads and sites are all paved and there are many trees but they rarely intrude on the sites. As previously stated, there are only 11 full hookup sites - all in Comfort Cove. There are 83 sites with water and electric around the park and the rest are primitive. Wi-Fi can be purchased but is slow. AT&T air is very, very slow but the Verizon card works well. iPhone voice service is inconsistent but Verizon voice is good. We camped at Elk City State Park in a Motorhome.
