What could be an exceptional camping experience is degraded by the numerous derelict campers and lack of rule enforcement. Even the camp host and cabin host have tethered animals without supervision. Extended stay campers are on the vagrant side of the camping line. Campground has the appearance of an abandoned carnival workforce. Otherwise it's very good location and could be an great campground. Kansas State Park officials need to review their regulations and enforce the rules. Disappointing at best. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Date of Stay: May, 2017 - $31.00
Overall Rating:

We were told CG #3 had more space between sites; we did all the loops and were not pleased with our options. A CG #1 premium struck our fancy. Not that I wanted to pay the extra $2/night for 50 amps, but we needed to stay for a 3 weeks and I was being picky. I assume premium is for the 50 amp service; it is certainly not for the view of the lake. We could see bit and pieces of water through the leaves, not worth extra $$. Lake is down a couple of steep sets of stairs and then there is no access due to vegetation. Lots of trails running along the lake between the campground and the lake. It rained and the trails were still very wet 3+ days later. We ended up walking on the road a lot; there were a lot of cars passing us. Most were courteous, except for the one that almost ran me over. Beach is a good 20+ minute walk on the trails or on the road. From the beach parking lot, it is 127 steps down to the beach! Bathrooms were fairly clean, mostly bugs and webs; one time I did encounter a mess like the previous reviewer mentioned. I felt it pretty pricey for no sewer hook ups. They say it is $23 for camping, but you also have to add the $5/night fee for your vehicles and another $3 per reservation fee. The touristy part of Lawrence is at least 20 min drive. We won't forget this place for an RV caught fire and burned to the ground across from us (well spaced sites! we didn't have to move) and the folks at the dump station that dumped without use of a hose despite my offer to use my hose. I certainly hope your stay isn't as eventful. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

HyVee on Clinton Parkway is a pretty good grocery store and has recycle bins in the back parking lot. Norge Village Coin Laundry is the closest, but go the few extra blocks south to 31st St Laundry, much cleaner.

For a State and Corp of Eng run state park, it needs some upgrades and better security. Stay clear of GC#3 if you are a long-term camper and have personal outdoor belongings. On several occasions the restroom toilets were clogged and rather disgusting. Part of that responsibility lays with campers not being respectful of state owned property or anyone's property for that matter. If I'm paying to camp somewhere I am at least respectful to not leave behind a disgusting mess for the next paying law abiding citizen and thinking that something setting outside next to another person's RV is free for the taking! Just be aware! CG#1 has always been clean and trouble free! Probably because it has a lot more to offer and is near the cabin area! We camped at Clinton State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This was one of the largest campgrounds we've ever seen, with hundreds of sites. During the week it was 3/4 empty, but more folks showed up for the weekend. Our "premium" site in Campground #3 had 50 amp electric and water (no sites have sewer). We had to trim some low hanging branches in order to back into our site, and we required several leveling blocks under our back wheels to get level. Many other sites looked fairly level so we just got unlucky. The park offers long-term/seasonal camping and we saw a number of run down/very old trailers, even one with a household washer and dryer hooked up outside, which surprised us for a state park. The sites are nicely spaced, and the park is attractive and clean. Being such a large campground, we always had plenty of places to walk the dog, including on several trails around the park. There's a very small beach area on the lake, but no dogs are allowed in the beach area. The showers were not good... the water wasn't hot, and with no curtain between your shower area and changing area, your clothes get wet while showering. We ended up doing navy showers in the RV all week rather than use the campground shower. With the $5/day park entry fee, the rate came to $26/day for us. If staying more than 5 nights, the annual pass at $25 becomes a better deal. We got AT&T and Verizon signal but it was weak and slow so we set up our booster which made things better. We found the area quiet and relaxing and would consider returning if we found ourselves in the area again. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Motorhome.

We've stayed several times at this campground and will return. The sites are flat, and have plenty of space between them with trees and a trail to the lake. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Truck Camper.

Very clean, nice RV spots, paved roads, and lots of activities. The park is right on the lake, and some spots have lake views. It seems that the State of Kansas is neglecting its State Parks over the last few years due to lack of funding, but we still enjoy camping here and in other Kansas State Parks. The towns of Lawrence and Topeka are both about 20 minutes away. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Grounds were beautiful. Spacious sites. Gravel with fire pit and picnic table. Bathrooms were extremely clean and large. We had plenty of service with our phones and television. The only down fall we had was we had to pay extra for our vehicles $5 per upon arrival. Even the one pulling our trailer although our receipt online stated 2 vehicles. Also, their swimming beach is about a 75 stair walk straight down and was not impressed. If not going for water, the campground was very nice and clean. Kid and dog friendly as well. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Clean huge and level sites, very quiet, easy access to highway. Clean facilities, however one bath house was under construction so we had to drive to the other one. The camp hosts were available as requested. Stayed here one night, would love to go back and explore it more. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Sites were long, level, and a decent width. A lot of weekenders even at this time of year. A lot of campground smoke at night. Don't know that we'd stay here again but we would recommend it to others. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

This is a large state park with several campgrounds. Sites vary in size, but most can accommodate any rig. Roads were paved. Sites were gravel. Water and electricity are available at most sites, but water was not yet turned on at individual sites. I had to fill up at the dump station. Some sites are out in the open; some have varying amounts of shade and nearby trees. The camp host was friendly and helpful. There was a playground for the kids. Showers were hot and clean, but spartan and in need of maintenance. It was unbelievably quiet at night with a chorus of bird songs to roust you out of bed at dawn. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed for a total of 6 nights: 3 in the Cedar Ridge campground and 3 nights in the Walnut campground. This is a beautiful park with some great camping facilities and it's close to Lawrence for shopping and sightseeing. We had 50 amp pull-through in Cedar Ridge, but moved to Walnut and had 30 amp but a much prettier back-in campsite. It's especially peaceful here late in the season. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Motorhome.

Pretty park but too much partying going on for me. People drinking beer and cussing. They want you to come join them. You loose privacy with that going on right next to you. And the park people seem to look the other way. Also it seems a bit expensive but I don't know what other state parks charge. Stayed 7 days and had to buy a yearly park pass on top of the nightly charge, so I haven't figured exactly what that all comes to. It's kind of confusing. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice State Park. For the most part it is clean and well maintained. Naturally since it is a state park, there is some "partyers" on the weekends. No sewer hook ups but there is a dump station at the park entrance of both campgrounds. Camp hosts are friendly and accommodating. We camped at Clinton State Park in a Motorhome.
