We spent four nights at this park which is located in central Kansas, not far from I-70. This portion of the state park has a cluster of campgrounds scattered in the hills along the pretty lake. The steep hills don't match the traditional view of flat land Kansas! In our case, though, the wind very much did fit the Kansas stereotype. We had lots of hot, dry wind with gusts rocking the camper. Obviously, this isn't an everyday occurrence, but we dealt with the wind (at times over 40 mph!) our entire stay.

We were in one of the four full hookup sites (the Foxtail loop). There were very few campers present during the week, but things got busier over the weekend when every spot, including camping cabins were booked.

One thing you might want to know is that above the camping fee there's a $5 a day entry fee (I included it in our paid per night). There's a nearby Corps of Engineers campgrounds with, I think, electric only that might be a better short stay.

I had no problem getting a satellite signal. Keeping it was a different thing, as the strong winds tended to move the dish just enough to disrupt the signal. During one especially strong blast associated with a passing thunderstorm, one of the guy wires I had put on it snapped. My Verizon had a weak but usable signal.

We enjoyed the star-lit nights and beautiful sunsets over the lake. The near record temperatures and constant winds rocking the camper, though, kept us inside through much of the day. Had the weather been more enjoyable, I think we would have been quite satisfied with this stop. The weather, though, caused us to look forward to calmer, cooler days elsewhere. We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Fifth Wheel.

We stayed in Big Bluestem #12. Site was right on the water with electric and water. Site was adequately level. Park has a good hiking trail up into the hills and we were able to take a nice bike ride across the dam to the other Campground. It was mid week, and everything was pretty quiet. Online Reservations worked fine and we were able to pick out our site ahead of time with no problems. The park works well for a 1-2 day stay - we will stay here again when we are passing through. We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Motorhome.

Great park for an extended stay or overnight stop as it's only 8 miles from I-70. This is a very beautiful park with great spaces. Rate does not include the $5 entrance fee. We stayed in the Big Bluestream area. All sites are very spacious. The back-in sites in this area have concrete pads and appear to be fairly level. Sites 26 thru 35 are considered pull-thru sites, but are really pull-over sites. Essentially, you just pull over to the side of the very wide road. Because these are not on actual pads, the side-to-side and front-to-back levelness is not great depending on the site you are in. Because of the pull-over nature of these sites, the electrical and water connections are also on the curb side of the space. Water pressure is very good and requires a pressure reducer. There was a brand new bath house installed at the entrance to this area and has extremely hot showers. There are 3 individual shower rooms on one side of the building, plus the separate restrooms on the other side of the building. The sidewalks and landscaping for the bath house were not installed when we visited, but appeared to be only a few weeks away from being completed. We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Travel Trailer.

This was a beautiful campground that we visited in order to take advantage of a mountain biking trail (Switchgrass). We stayed at site 15 in the Big Bluestem section, which is located on the edge of a peninsula. This site was INCREDIBLE! You can walk down to the water from the site, and the scenery is amazing. Beautiful views all around. The site slopes down considerably about 5-6' from the edge of the concrete pad, so you probably won't be able to get your picnic table right next to your site, if you're in anything other than a tent.

Arrived on a Sunday after 4pm so main office was closed. Believe that you might have to purchase a vehicle pass for any vehicles going in and out of the park, but we never visited the office for one (we also never left the park/used a vehicle in the 3 days we were there, so that might be a moot point). Just be sure to check in with them if staying for awhile.

Didn't use bathroom or shower facilities, but site was easy to back into and level the RV on. Big rigs might have some difficulty getting around the loop road at the very end (we're 30' with a small tow vehicle and it was tight for us). We were able to get a verizon mifi signal here.

We would 100% say here again at this amazing campground, but probably only if it were on the water with it's amazing views. We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Wilson SP is pretty isolated, so bring in supplies. The closest town is 10 miles south with a population less than 800. Closest Walmart is a neighborhood market 26 miles SW, the closest Supercenter is in Hays, a 55 mile/1hr drive one way.

If you go for the MTB trails @ Switchgrass, make sure you know how to fix your bike! Hubby broke his chain the first day and there is NO place around to get it fixed or buy parts or supplies. Apparently the trail is amazing though.

This area is very beautiful, a nice find in Kansas. We arrived at sunset for a one-night stay during our travel, so we didn't get to enjoy the park during daylight, but it was a nice evening. We parked in Big Bluestem with power/water only for $18, plus there is a $5 weekly park entrance fee and a $3 reservation fee. The first night cost us $26, but if you stay longer it would be $18/night thereafter. There was maybe 4 other RVs around that we could see, including the hosts. We pretty much felt alone and secluded in this pristine area. The bath houses were locked for the season. We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Fifth Wheel.

Very nice park with sites right on the lake. There are some nice hiking trails and plenty of space to walk a small dog. We stayed in Bluestem #12 for one night. It was pull through, level and located right on the lakeshore. Everything is well spaced out in the campground and the stars were great at night! We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Motorhome.

The lake is beautiful. This is a wonderful place to stay in the autumn or spring, but not in 105 degree temps in the middle of July because of lack of shade. There are nice trees growing and one day that may get better as the trees get taller. The daily rate includes the daily $4.00 admission fee to the park. Sites are nice and level and there are beautiful nature trails to hike which I enjoyed. Verizon cell phone service and MiFi (hotspot) is touch and go here. It's a nice spot to stop and rest a few days from the road, very peaceful and quiet. Showers and restrooms could be improved. We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Travel Trailer.

This is in a remote area of Kansas, about 6 miles north of I-70. It is beautiful and quiet. The sites are fairly level with views of the reservoir. A gem! We camped at Wilson State Park, Otoe in a Travel Trailer.
