Nice park on Barkley lake. Sites range from very good to bad. Fisherman's loop has nice spots in the trees but lack sewer. Browns point most have sewer and great views but are close together. Some are fairly level but others would pose a challenge. About the golf carts. It must be a local tradition as we have never encountered them before, and we see reference to golf carts at other sites in the area. A lot of campers seemed to already know each other. Have to be somewhat local to bring their camper, boat and golf cart. No excessive noise or speed noted, just a twice daily (at least), parade of golf carts going by. Host were pleasant and helpful We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

Gorgeous location on Lake Barkley in the Land Between the Lakes in western Kentucky. Some lovely areas for walking/biking. Over-the-air TV got a few channels and Verizon signal was good. Laundry machines in a couple of the bathhouses. Campground staff/hosts were awesome. We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

If possible, check your site options out before choosing. The primitive loop is only suitable for small motorhomes or trailers and some of the sites are only good for tents. The other loops look pretty good for larger RV's but things like leveling, spaciousness, and sun/shade vary. Prices set according to amenities ($18 for E/W in primitive loop to $30 for E/W waterfront sites and $34 for full hookups).

We were in a heavily forested loop of the campground. Our site was large and not close to our neighbor, so our dog had plenty of space to roam. It was a good place from which to explore the Land Between the Lakes. There was easy access to both Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley. AT&T cell coverage was good in the campground as was Verizon MiFi. We were lucky to have found a hole in the trees for our satellite reception (Dish). Some sites in this campground are difficult for larger units to get into and some sites are in full sun. Make sure you check it out before you reserve a spot. Be careful when driving the roads in this park because there are several deer that live here and they don't necessarily move when a car goes by. We camped at Canal COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We stopped on a weekend layover traveling from Florida to Minnesota. Unfortunately, the temperature almost 100 with heat index of 107. It didn't get much below 80 at night. We didn't get around the park as much as we'd hoped. Bath houses were clean, except for a wash of dead bugs in the morning, of which the park was aware and trying to control. Electric and water were fine. The sites were all very different, some shaded, some smaller. There was not much choice for our 40' rig. We stayed on the edge of the boat ramp (84). Last site available. Interestingly, it was very private, flat and except for almost full sun, a fine place for us to stay. Sites 103-110 are basically parallel parking along the edge of a large paved oval by the swim dock. Most other sites are very charming and tucked into the landscape. Most are well shaded with mature trees. I was pleasantly surprised that the park had giant industrial fans on the shaded swim dock. I assume so that the little children didn't die of heat exposure. I would love to return in more clement weather. We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Bring what you need with you. There is quite a drive to a close grocery store. There is a small market a few miles away, but a little pricey. Patti's 1880's Settlement is a huge tourist spot. Bill's Restaurant received a B from us, and was more expensive then it was worth. Think Country Kitchen on steroids.

Great campground and inexpensive. Close to Grand Rivers and Land Between the Lakes. Facilities were excellent and the campers and the staff were great. Quiet and peaceful. I know there were some negative reviews about campers being rude and golf carts everywhere. I found that not true. I'd go again in a heartbeat. The area has lots to offer. Check it out. Tips for other Campers:

Go to Patti's Settlement and check out the restaurant. Food was 5 star good. The lakes are beautiful. Do some research ahead of time on Land Between the Lakes. We didn't and missed a lot. We relied on points of interest literature. Found out later there was much more, especially about the Civil War in the area. We went to a show at Badgett's and that was great also.

Really enjoyed Canal Campground! There are seven loops to chose from, and I'd recommend Woods or Beach Loop for shady and spacious sites. Both have a view of the cove where the swimming beach is located. Browns Point Loop is on a bluff with an expansive view of the water and offers shade as well. For really big rigs or chicken drivers, try Canal View Loop which has wider roads and pull-thrus. No shade in the Canal View Loop, but the lake view is excellent. We found the property to be clean, mowed, and well maintained. Yes, the interior loop roads are narrow and hilly, but you can handle it. Just go slow and take your time backing in. Yes, other folks make fires and ride around in golf carts. Get over it. That's what people do in campgrounds. This COE campground is a lovely setting and worth staying for a few nights, despite what some reviewers have groused about. Perfect for boaters as there's a large launch area, too. We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

This is a very nice campground. It is located in the woods right on the banks of the Lake. The site is level with a picinic table, and fire ring. The week we were here it was cold and rainy, but that did not deter from the beautiful green trees. We camped at Canal COE in a Travel Trailer.

We were in site 34, very difficult to back our 35 foot fifth wheel into, had to ask the people across the road to move their truck. Level shaded site was comfortable after we set up. Loop road into our site was very tight as well with poor surface. Other loops in park do have better road surfaces and some have better access for larger 5ers. There is a lake, a lot of fishing going on. We camped at Canal COE in a Fifth Wheel.

This is one of the nicest campgrounds in the Land Between the Lakes area. However, it is suffering from deferred maintenance both in the facilities and the roads. About half of the campground is not suitable for big rigs because the sites are either too short, too skinny, or not level. We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

This is an interesting location on a large canal between two huge lakes. A developed area, but we did see deer and wild turkeys within the park. Most good sites are first come, first served and cannot be reserved, which leaves reservable sites in high demand. This left us to reserve a very bad site, in a very bad loop.

The Primitive loop is one of the worst loops I have ever stayed in. One of the only sites left a month before our stay was site 5. This site was a pull-through with a very steep entrance and exit. Deep cut marks in the pavement bore witness to many rigs scraping bottom on their way into and out of this site. This loop was installed as an after thought and not really clearly thought out. It is perched on the side of a steep hill with deep drop offs on both sides of the road. The picnic table and fire ring was up hill from the pad about twenty steps. The other loops are much better if you can get a site. Some of the volunteer sites were junkie and unkempt, which took away from an otherwise beautiful campground. We camped at Canal COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Grand River is a small town within limited shopping. There are some nice restaurants nearby. The TVA Dam and Locks are nearly by with a visitors center at the dam. Guides will walk you through the history of the area and the building and operation of this complex. Kentucky Dam State Resort Park is a few miles away. It is worth a visit.

Stayed here for 3 nights. Site 46 was a back-in. It was easy to back our 40 footer in because the road was semi-circular and the trees were not as close to each other as on other sites. Our site was level whereas we noticed that there were a number of sites on our loop that we would have never been able to get into, either because of the trees or because the site sloped up from the road. Campground is really quite beautiful and we would definitely come back again and try very hard to get site 46 again. We camped at Canal COE in a Fifth Wheel.

We made a reservation on-line; alas, ours was absolutely nothing like the picture displayed! Most all sites are in the woods and roomy; one very nice area is in an open field setting with very spacious sites. But, our site was in the forest and by the lake, which was drawn down in October, so we had an absolutely lovely view of a greenish mud hole.

Many of the sites are rather deep in ravines, mined with large deciduous trees, mainly back-ins, and tricky getting into. Ours came with nifty "tire traps" on each side of the site - fall of the edge of the site and you're doomed. We finally backed down in correctly - it was short, unlevel, with a steep entry.

CG culture. Okay, There seemed a lot of locals here from western KY. Lovely folks really, but it seemed they do crave their constant smoky campfires both day and night. Apparently, there's nothing more healthful or invigorating than waking up fresh in the morning and then immediately standing directly over the smoldering campfire, and breathing deeply. "Ahhh" - So good! Fellow campers around us seemed so delighted to smoke out the entire area, the constant toxic fog blanketed our once pleasant hollow: thick and stinky, and made it seem more like London, than western Kentucky. It forced us to keep our trailer hermetically sealed, as the constant stench was so strong and acrid, we simply couldn't breath.

On top of the fire thing, most all folks at the CG seem oddly incapable or unwilling to use their feet, for the dying art known as "walking". Most site dwellers, felt the strong desire to bring a large annoying snazzy gas powered, "camp cart". Campers - happily whizzing around aboard these noisy, fast moving, and dangerous buggies, seemed to delight in the "go-cart" activity - while lowly fellow humans, trying to move themselves under their own quiet locomotive powers, must be ever vigilantly for being run over at any moment; much like squirrels trying to cross a busy highway. We camped at Canal COE in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Some of the best and nicest places to stay in the CG are on a first come, first serve status, and oddly cannot be reserved. Not are off from the CG you will find the little town of Grand Rivers, which is a delight. Miss Patti's 1880's Settlement is much more than an simple restaurant - there are a whole collection of fun and unique shops to visit within. There are also other cute shops around the main street that provide services for visitors and a pleasant diversion for a couple of hours.

We were in the Woods Loop, Site 50. We were able to back in our 34 foot travel trailer without too much trouble - leveling was more of an issue because the site slopes upward towards the front (entrance side). A shorter trailer would have no problem. The site was beautiful - view of the canal through the trees. Not too close to other sites (some sites were VERY close to others). No sewer, no problem with water or electric (50 amp). Very wide site at the bottom, with picnic table, fire ring and utility table. Wifi (Verizon) was only 3G, but phone service was okay. Too many trees for satellite. Good location, close to town and to all attractions. We camped at Canal COE in a Travel Trailer.

This is the worst COE park we have stayed in. Here for 2 weeks and the grass was never cut. Had an issue with the breaker at the post tripping about halfway through the stay. Called the park ranger early in the morning. He said maintenance would show up that day or the next day. If they ever showed we don't know it. Didn't have another issue with electricity the rest of the stay. Why do I rate as high? The area has some great sites to visit. We camped at Canal COE in a Motorhome.

The sites are narrow in the front and wide in the back. The entire three days we were there, we watched everyone struggle to back into their sites. We had no help and it took us 1/2 hour to get situated. If you are lucky to have help you might get your rig into you site in about 20 min. Sites are huge. You can park a boat or anything else with your rig. We camped at Canal COE in a Fifth Wheel.
