Overall Rating:

This is a very pretty, pleasant campground, with much shade and comfortable space between sites. We had looked at the map and selected a site (153) on a corner, with ample space on both sides. We arrived on a Saturday, and the park was absolutely crammed with campers, with many children and some adults roaming all the roads on bicycles. It was an intense family scene. Most of the sites had multiple vehicles in addition to the camper, filling the spaces between sites. At least half the sites had campfires going, on a very hot day(!), filling the campground with thick smoke. We had to seal ourselves up in our motorhome in order to breathe. The one good thing was that the campers were reasonably quiet, with no loud music whatsoever. Sunday morning, they started pulling out, leaving absolutely no trash behind, and the place was mostly empty and clean by 2 p.m. If you want a peaceful, relatively smoke-free experience, come here Sunday through Thursday. Staff was pleasant and helpful. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The Boonesborough fort has an interesting history. It has been rebuilt and is used for reinactments, which are popular with tourists. It is a short distance from the campground, so that reinactments do not impact campers. The campground is about 15-20 miles from town, not terribly convenient for dining out.

Park is located south of Lexington, KY. We stayed twice within a month while a family member recovered from an surgery in a Lexington hospital. Campground store is open until 10 PM each night. When traveling to and from the hospital, open til 10 PM was a nice convenience. Our locations were peaceful which allowed family members to sleep during the day hours. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Motorhome.

Easy check-in process, greeted by friendly folks at the office. Site was of adequate size to handle truck and fifth wheel without having to unhook. Be aware of the mud if it rains. Nice site if it is dry but very messy if it rains. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

The roads in this large campground are good and the sites are all paved. The campground has 161 sites. All have electric and water but only 18 of them are full hookup. Be sure to pay attention when making reservations if you want full hookups. The water hookups are shared between every other site and some of them are a long way from the campsite. I ended up getting out some hoses I haven't used in a while to reach our spigot. The road you turn on to get to the campground is at the bottom of a "trucks use lower gear" hill just before the Kentucky River Bridge. You will want to keep your speed down to make the turn onto Hwy 388 to get to the campground. Also, about half way down that same steep hill is the turn off for the Fort itself. You don't want that first turn, but rather, Hwy 388. While there is plenty of space between the individual campsites you might want to be aware that the back in sites aren't all deep enough for a larger RV. Also, if the campsite description says the slope is moderate or severe you can believe it. Some of the sites are pretty steep. Again, be sure to read the site description when making reservations. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Of course, the reason for this state park is that this is the location of Fort Boonesborough which was constructed in 1775 by Daniel Boone and those he lead. Today the recreated fort is a living history museum.

The main attraction is the reconstructed Fort Boonesborough which was not yet open for the season. We were able to take a short trail from the campground to the fort and take exterior pictures. Bathrooms, showers and laundry were adequate if not pristinely clean. The staff were nice and the camp store had a good selection. We could not reach the water connection at our site so be aware the location of connections are not convenient on many sites. It rained while we were there and our campsite turned into a mud pit. Sites closer to the camp store were on higher ground. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Motorhome.

Be sure to check the schedule to see if the reconstructed Fort Boonesborough will be open during your visit. They also have special events throughout the year like Women on the Frontier, Spring Trade Days, A Gathering of Descendants, The 1778 Siege of Boonesborough , Touched by the Fire Blacksmith's Weekend, Rifle Frolic and Frontier Skills, Winter Trade Days at the Fort and 18th Century Christmas at the Fort.

We have stayed here twice and have always had a wonderful time here. They have a ton of activities to keep the kids busy, access to the Kentucky River, and the pool is wonderful. Most of the sites are going to require some sort of leveling, as most of them are slightly off level. All sites are paved as well as the road. AT&T cell service is good. Sites 1-26 are full hookups. Some sites will not have access to satellites due to the foliage. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Travel Trailer.

There are numerous things to do around Fort Boonesborough State Park. There is a canoe rental on the Kentucky River, fishing on the river, you can tour Fort Boonesborough which is right down the road from the campground, hiking in the park, and numerous bourbon distilleries within 30 min drive.

Closer to Winchester than Richmond. Packed on weekends. TenGo internet, which is in all Ky State Parks, is absolute useless. Verizon signal decent. Highway noise til 3am was unbelievable, even on a weeknight, so they'll never see us again. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Motorhome.

Nice site, pads are on the short side but sufficient. Can see Kentucky River from our site thru the trees. 50a power, shared water hookups with high pressure- recommend not fully opening if you don't have pressure regulator on your rig. Nice facilities, bathrooms are typical for a state park- clean but older. Several dumping stations available. Would come again, good value. This is a beautiful state park. We used their junior Olympic pool several times and it felt great! We rode around the park, but didn't visit the Fort...then found out that the pool and the Fort would be closed the next day so we moved on. This is very pretty and full amenities except for sewer in our pull through. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Not sure why this is listed under Richmond, Ky. It is located MUCH closer to Winchester. Tengo Internet is garbage on weekdays and worse on weekends, so save your money. I wouldn't call this place big rig friendly. Very few pull thrus and none with FHU. Water pressure was very good though water hookups are 20+ feet from the site. Gets pretty packed on weekends, but still a relatively quiet park. No fenced dog run. Many campers fail to leash their dogs at their sites. Guess they think Fluffy will stay put and not cause any problems. Some road noise from the highway, but not bad. Good camp store. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Stop by the Winchester/Clark County tourism office for all kinds of good info. The ladies who work there are very knowledgeable and very friendly. If you like Beer Cheese, do the Beer Cheese Trail. Bluegrass Museum was interesting to visit. Graze Restaurant requires reservations and is open 5 days a week for dinner only. Halls is a good restaurant close to the cg. Cairns is downtown and is a "new age" sandwich shop. Lexington is a short drive.

Stayed at Boonesboro State Park for five days during the week. Overall I enjoyed staying at the park. Sites in the park itself were very clean campground store was very adequate with everything you would need. Both Winchester Kentucky and Richmond Kentucky are within a 10-15 minute drive. Sites are level, Water and electric were in the easy reach but on some sites an extra hose would be needed. I was told by the campground host that the park is very crowded on the weekends. One unsightly part about the park is that around the full hook up sites there is a large sewage processing building that looks in bad shape. Very close to a major roadway but the road noise was not a problem for me. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The park is a rustic park in the trees. Our biggest concern is that it is not as big rig friendly as we would have liked. We phoned ahead a few days earlier and they said things were getting slow so no need to booked ahead even though we were a big rig (39 foot 5th wheel). When we got there on Saturday afternoon there were 2 pull thru sites left. We were told to go ahead and drive around and choose what we wanted, either the pull thru or a backin. One pull thru was long enough so we choose that. A bit narrow to get in around the posts and trees. Not level front to back. Good thing we went back to the office immediately to register since the woman in the office was on the phone saying only 2 pull thrus left. I quickly interrupted and said ours was taken.

The water connection was on a shared pedestal on the other side of Rv so we needed 2 hoses to reach it.

Overall probably a good park for smaller rigs but be ready to level your rig. The backin sites were maximum 35 feet if that, and then you would have to put your vehicle on the grass. No noise from the quarry this weekend. Water pressure appeared to be very high. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

What a great state park! Our site was large, but not level, causing us a bit of trouble to get settled, but once we were it was worth it. Unfortunately it rain/poured almost the entire time we were there. Due to weather we were unable to use the pool, although it was beautiful and would have been fun! The small camp store had basic necessities and there is a Walmart within 10 miles of the park. We arrived on a Sunday and could see that on a weekend the park would be packed. The fort, pool, etc. are closed on Monday and Tuesday, so if they are important to you, be advised. The weather really was a contributing factor to our stay there, the park has a fantastic warning system for weather, which is loud enough to wake us even at 3 AM! I can't wait to come back through this area and stay here when the weather is nicer and we can enjoy the amenities. We camped at Fort Boonesborough State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
