The last time we stayed here was 10 years ago. We were glad to be back. Little had changed which is mostly good. The shower house could definitely use a makeover but they were all working and we really had no issues. We did have an issue with those #$%^&* National Park water spigots. Ours had a bad anti-siphon valve and we would not have been able to use it except there was a NP maintenance dude stopped at the host site and we walked over there. He immediately came to our site and proceeded to change out the faulty valve twice before he managed to get one that worked for us. As mentioned in other reviews you very likely will need a bungee cord or heavy zip tie to hold the water handle in the on position. The picnic tables and fire rings were new. The site was level and we had a wonderful early Fall camp and hiking experience. We'll be back. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Visit the 2 overlooks and the Blue Heron Coal town and visitor center. Hiking in the area is very good. A side trip into Sterns KY to the coal mine museum is well worth a few hours. Also an historic train ride from Sterns to the Blue Heron visitor center is available.

Overall Rating:

Stayed here in our 21' Travel Trailer and this place was about what we expected. It is very out of the way, in the amazingly large and beautiful Big South Fork National River Recreational Area. This is one of the two main NPS campgrounds in the area and it is more out of the way and I suspect a little less maintained.

As other reviewers have stated, the facilities are a little older and in need of some TLC. Also, many of the sites don't have a lot of shade. The park was fairly full as we were there on a weekend, though no problems with noise. We reserved online and there was a sign on our site with our name saying reserved when we arrived. We got there late in the day and were there two days and never interacted with staff or camp hosts.

We did have a small issue with our 30amp breaker tripping with AC running when my wife microwaved something. We haven't ever had this issue before, so I'm not sure if there was an issue with our site's power. Site's water spigot didn't want to stay on even with the diverter pulled down. Used a bungee cord wrapped around the handle to keep the water flowing.

Overall, we would stay here again as it is cheap and in a beautiful area, this park could become a real gem with a little love. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This park isn't for everyone, but we were here to visit the Bartel Mine (excellent tour BTW), kayak the Big South Fork and lay over a holiday weekend, somewhere without a huge hassle and lots of noise.

This fit the bill. Clean, well-patrolled by park rangers, and plenty of shade. Very nice mostly back-in and level spots with easy, accessible hook-ups. Hosts were friendly and very helpful. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Right turn out of campground gets you to Mine 18 Visitors Center and beyond that is the kayak put-in on the Big South Fork, Cumberland River. This campground is closest to both.

When we first got to the campground we weren't impressed. It was smaller than we thought it would be and kind of outdated, but as the day went on we liked it more.Check in was by self or campground host. It was very quiet (especially for a holiday weekend) and people were friendly. We stayed for 2 days and spent them sightseeing or hiking various trails. If we are in the area we would stay again to hike, but we wouldn't make this a main vacation point. Checking out was easy and the dump station was very easy to use.Overall,we had a good camping experience. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Not nearly enough shade for me. We like to camp in the woods, not a field with the occasional shade tree. This place is in a gorgeous location in the Big South Fork Recreation area, and really close to the Scenic Railway but seems outdated, and not well taken care of. Considering how far it is away from everything and what you get I would not stay here. If you don't like the woods consider this park. It would be very very quiet. Overall Rating:

This is a beautiful little campground in the Big South Fork Recreation Area. Good-sized sites that offer electric and water. The bath-house is clean, but the showers aren't the most modern you'll ever come across. But they are functional. You must follow bear country guidelines when it comes to food storage. Bear proof trashcans and food lockers are provided. But I highly doubt that you will ever see a bear in or near this campground. Plenty to see and do within easy driving and hiking distance. Gorgeous views from the hiking trails. I will definitely return to this campground again. I would rate it higher than an eight if the showers were a little more modern and full-hookups were offered. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Travel Trailer.

We were the first to review this campground. It has been our favorite campground and the campground still is. However, they keep changing concessionary and the administration keeps changing. They are trying to force everyone to make reservations before coming. However, if the weather turns bad or you have something come up you forfeit the cost of the first night. This causes two problems. First if you can't go you loose $17. Second, if someone shows up that want's to camp that site is reserved and will sit unused. We never know for sure we have time until the last minute. So we just show up and pick an unreserved site and have a nice weekend. We've been doing this for years now. We showed up this Friday evening and were in the process of choosing a site when the camp host drove up and informed us that we could only pay for one night. And that if someone reserved the site on the on-line reservations system we would have to leave. At the time is was cold and raining! The guy was condescending and kept telling me I just didn't understand. Why don't we use the reservation system? You automatically get charged for the first night. It's non-refundable. So if a hurricane hits you are out of luck. If we can't just show up and claim an available site for the weekend we won't bother to go back. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Motorhome.

This is one of the best values I have seen in campgrounds. Electric and water hook-ups on a beautiful, large site for $17 per night. ($8.50 per night with America The Beautiful Senior Pass) The park is in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area with lots of great scenery and amazing views on many of the hiking trails. Clean restrooms and showers, with friendly camp hosts and staff. We will return here yearly. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

We've been staying at this campground for 15 years starting with a 2-person tent. We like it because the campground is never that crowded and affords a little privacy. The shower house is generally clean. It's a bit rustic so don't expect ceramic tile and blow dryers. There is a great 8 mile loop for hiking but it is pretty demanding. Pick the right site and you feel like you're all alone even if the park is packed. The sites are all large and nicely spaced. There is no office or campground store and the closest store to buy ice and other supplies is about 10 miles. So make sure you have plenty of ice before you get there. Then sit back and relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. We camped at Blue Heron Campground in a Fifth Wheel.
