This is a county park about 10 miles from town with good roads all the way, a popular fishing spot. There's an on-site manager, many seasonals, but most sites are well kept. They have a 1.5 mile walking trail, which we did not try. There are also a few cabins. Dump stations and bath houses are convenient and the campground was quiet when we were there. We were able to get a Verizon signal, but could not get a Dish signal on our site due to tall pine trees, but others had dishes set up that evidently worked. The sites are grass and gravel. This campground is not fancy, but very adequate and pleasant if you are visiting the area, the only one we could find. - User1392

We had a great stay at this park. We were concerned that it was first come, first serve but had no problem getting a site midweek. Campground was beautiful and well kept. Nice little playground and small fishing pond. But, warning::::the electrical at this park is a train wreck. We plugged into four different sites and found only part of the things in our camper operating. Eventually we plugged our 30-50 amp converter in and got things working. It was two hours of getting setup and worrying that our rig was broken. Sites were paved but not level. I would go again but this time with a surge protector/tester! - TurtlesLifeForUs

This is a nice quiet park. Scenes from the movie "How the West was Won" were filmed at this park as well as scenes for the TV show, "Davy Crockett." I enjoy this park although it may be too quiet for some individuals. A restaurant and cabins are in the park. The restaurant is very popular on weekends and the staff is very pleasant. The cabins have beautiful peaceful views. Campsites cannot be reserved. Discounts are available for seniors. Handicap sites are available. A playground is available for children. Picnic tables are available at each campsite. The campsites are relatively level. With some sites you may want leveling blocks. Although the campsite pavement is not as wide as I would like, they have a separate paved parking site for your truck or car next to the camper site. Backing in was not bad with plenty of headroom for pulling forward. Trees near the campsites do not hinder parking your camper. Water is available at spigots in the campground where you can fill your water tank. Water is not available at each campsite. This campground would be a 9 or 10 if it had water and sewer at each site. The shower house is clean but the shower temperature is not adjustable. The water was comfortable but became hotter the longer it was on. The shower house has two showers for men and two for women. The handicap showers were not working during my visit leaving only one shower for men and one for women. It did not seem to be a problem since they were not busy. The campground is well maintained. I hope to return for another visit. - Dupo Camper

I was last here in 1998 and the bathhouse was not completed at the time. The park ranger was very friendly and helpful when needed. Water was available at different areas but within walking distance of any camping area. - rockdoctor

This is self pay. Nobody is onsite. We only saw tents. There are NO level spots for RV's. We did not stay. It felt like a campground in the side of a mountain. - Yellow Submarine

This is a plain vanilla Forest Service campground in the Garden of the Gods Recreation Area inside the Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois. Water is available at pump, restrooms are pit toilets (relatively new concrete structures, very clean) no dump station available. Campsites are on a high ridge with good views of the surrounding area from the edge. Loose structure to the campsites allowed easy maneuvering to set up for nice views from our trailer. We were the only ones in the park. Good hiking trails. - VACHZHD

We loved it! We were the only ones there. It's pretty much a campground on someone's farm land. There were cows in the distance and you could tell that other campers must bring their horses. There was covered horse poop. My 1.5 year old fell in the grass into horse poop twice. I consider it a great experience for her. We felt very safe even though we were alone. We blasted music and enjoyed the creek right next to our camper. The owner helped us to find a spot. He was very nice. We had a level site. It was very spacious. It was literally a farmland type setup. - Yellow Submarine

This campground has a nice, unique, rustic feel and is very different from the regular RV campgrounds we have visited. We enjoyed seeing all of the horses walking around. The owners were nice and friendly. The road/driveway that goes back into the campground is pretty rough for a travel trailer (ours is a 30' that is only two months old). We camped at a spot at the top of the hill that had a wonderful view and a very large campsite lot. It is one of the best campsite lots we have ever had. The road up to the top of the hill was extremely rough and had lots of ruts. At first, we weren't sure whether or not we would even be able to make it all the way up the hill, but eventually we did. A four-wheel drive vehicle is definitely a must in this campground. Water pressure was okay at some times, but there were a few times when the pressure was so low, that we had absolutely no water at all for thirty minutes or so at a time. This was very inconvenient when trying to cook or take a shower. This campground has a lot of potential and could do really well, if money was invested to smooth out the rough roads and correct the water pressure problem. Even with the two problems we experienced (the roads and water pressure), we still want to return to this campground because of how unique it was. - Penny C
