We stayed here for two nights. The sites have water and electric but no sewer hookup although there is a dump station. The sites were far enough apart that you weren't bothered by other campers. Nice area close to the lake. The only drawback this time of year is the mosquitoes. Be sure to bring repellant. All in all I would camp here again. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Reserved two out-of-season nights at the campground; we were one of two campers in the entire campground. It was a beautiful spot overlooking Upper Caney Lake (site 16). Unfortunately, there was no water pressure anywhere in the campground when we arrived and throughout the night and into the following day. A water main serving the park fractured and was under repair. It would have been nice if there was a sign at the park entrance or the camp host came down to let us know about the problem before we got deep into the park. After calling the ranger station and learning about the problem, we were told that the repair would be completed by the end of the day and water would be back on...it wasn't. The bathrooms are spartan (typical for some state and national park campgrounds. The showers were simple and showed a lot of wear and tear. Hard to argue about the cost of a night's stay but, were very disappointed about the lack of water and having to take the initiative to find out what the problem was. The park staff could have been much more proactive. I would return again to the park in the future. Note: Google Maps takes a crazy route through Minden to get to the park. There are two campgrounds...Beaver Dam Campground and Upper Caney Lake Campground. Beaver Dam Campground is closed in the winter. Google can find Beaver Dam but not Upper Caney Lake. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Google Maps takes you through narrow residential streets in the town of Minden on the way to the park entrance. Plan your route ahead of time using Google Maps only as a guide. There is no entrance booth that is staffed; everything is self-serve.

Beautiful location on the lake but the campground bathroom facilities need a good scrub and re-do. The campsites are mostly back-in with good spacing and privacy between sites. The road through the campground is narrow but not a problem if you are careful. This campground is off the beaten path and was an enjoyable outdoor experience. However, because of the bathroom facilities I would look around at other public campgrounds in the area before I went back to this one. We loved this park. The roads in were clear of branches and well maintained. The sites are very long and lots of space. Site surface was gravel and featured a fire ring and picnic table.

We had a fabulous view of the lake. We would have stayed longer if possible but will be back. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Once you find the campground it is nice. County/Parish roads are not marked well so it is easy to miss your turn. Heavily wooded because it is a National Forest but trees are kept back from each site so there is sun and shade during the day. Satellite access can be a challenge depending on site location. Interior roads are quite narrow, loop roads even more so. Backing into sites can be quite difficult for larger rigs because there is little to no shoulder to swing on. Ditches on either side of the loop road are deep with hidden culverts right where you don't want them to be. Even with satellite research to find the easiest back-in site there will be something to add a challenge. Once backed in the site is paved, wide, with picnic table and fire ring. Water and power hookups are where they should be and at knee to waist height. It's very quiet even backed up to the lake with little or no boat traffic. We'll stay here again, the two days we spent here were very relaxing. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Nearest town (Mindon) is about five miles away and really the only source for supplies. Lots of stores, restaurants and churches in town. Founded in 1836 there are many historic homes to see all around town.

Level campsite with gravel pad in addition to asphalt parking pad. Bathroom and shower facilities adequate and private. This campground was a disappointment. It is in need a of an update. As a previous camper stated, the signage was lacking, even once we found the campground. The sites were large, with picnic table and fire ring. The asphalt pad was not in good shape, and hard to find a level spot. Since we are not self-contained, bathrooms and showers are a necessity. These were ok, clean and flush toilets, but we declined to take a shower since we would be home the next day. After dark, be sure to take a flashlight, since the lights are not working. We probably not be camping here again. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Tent Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a National Forest campground. You enter Minden and then turn just before the main street stores and then take a long winding road through rural areas before arriving at the site. Much of the drive from Minden is through a very poor unkempt neighbourhood which was discouraging. Closer to the Park, poverty gives way to newer suburban development and hobby farms. The campground is not well marked. We saw one sign in the town of Minden and then nothing until we reached the National Forest so use your map or GPS to find your way in. We expect big lots and space between sites in this type of campground but this one is exceptionally so. Our paved site was so large that with our pick up and trailer still hitched (56') we would have room for another entire truck in front of our rig. In addition to the very large wide drive there was a huge pad of fine gravel with an oversized picnic table. This campground could take the biggest rig I have seen. Each site had its own set of garbage cans. Half the sites are reserve and half are first come first served. The place was about one quarter full on the early spring weekday we arrived. We had a nice selection of sites. Firewood was not provided so if you must have a fire, be sure to stop in and buy some from the many places on the way in who are selling. The campground host was friendly and welcoming and proudly boasted about how this campsite won some sort of well deserved award for their super clean bathrooms. This campground is a good 20 miles from any store and you will not pass any stores after you get off the interstate unless you detour through Minden so stock up before you go in. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

The campground is above the upper dam. If you want to see the big alligators, walk from the campground to the boat dock, cross the foot bridge, take the path to the dyke. Walk on dyke to the end. On sunny days the gators like to sun themselves there. For fishing, a local old timer proudly showed off pictures of a 9 pound 23 inch bass he caught at the base of the upper dam's spillway the day before.

The site was in a State Park and was very clean. The roads in the campground are very narrow and there are very few places to turn around. Site did not have sewer hookup; however, was on a concrete pad and very nice. Our site was very spacious. We had a horrible cell phone signal and our portable WIFI barely worked. This park is about 15 minutes away from the Interstate. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

This is another in the absolutely wonderful, and cheap, Corp of Engineers sites we have stayed at throughout Arkansas and now in northern Louisiana. You can't beat them. Electric and Water for about $18 tops and half that with a senior pass, and most of them are right on lakes. The sites are spacious and long and level. There are showers, but I will say they were old and not very appealing. But they'd do if you need them. We didn't use it, but they have a dump station so you can empty your tanks on the way out. No wi-fi of course, and Verizon signal was week, but I would absolutely stay here again! We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Truck Camper.

Before saying anything else, it is very easy to miss this campground. The website doesn't give enough or correct information. Coming from Minden on 159 north, keep an eye out for sign on the right (about 3 or 4 miles). It will say Beaver Dam or Caney Lakes 2 miles. This is where you turn left on Caney Lake Road. The campground is 2 miles down on the left. We kept going and had to drive another 4 miles to turn around in a church parking lot. On returning there was a huge sign to the park coming from this direction. Why don't they have the same sign in both directions? In any case, if you desire quiet near a lake this is the place for you. There were only 3 or 4 other RVs when we we visited. Several sites were long enough to handle our 45 foot motorhome. Some were more level than others. Plenty of room between sites as well. The utilities all worked great. We never saw anyone just paid our fee and dropped it in the box. The downsides are no WiFi, very limited if any Verizon coverage (at least at our site 12), and gnatty bugs. The interior roads are pretty narrow for large units but doable, and there were a few rather large potholes. Some overhanging branches but mostly trimmed. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

I believe someone called this campground a Hidden Gem and that is exactly what it is. We planned about three days and just keep extending. By the time we leave it will be over a week. It is quiet and beautiful with great views of the lake. All the sites are excellent; not a bad one at all. Not all sites have water views but if not they have beautiful forest views. The sites are large with level paved pads, a fire ring, gravel patio area and a picnic table. Some of the picnic tables need help but we got a good one. We are in site #20 with a view of the lake across the road. We are on the back half of the loop and most people don't come this far so there is no one around us. About half the sites can be reserved and the rest are for walk-ins. Only 15, 16 and 17 seem to get reserved. The bathrooms need some help but they work. We have 50 amp power and good water. There is a dump station on the way out. Our Verizon phones and jet pack don’t work very well but sometimes they are fine. The Sugar Cane Trail goes through the park and is a wonderful walk in the woods. It is good for mountain biking also. The rate reflects the Golden Age discount. I would definitely return. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.

We, too, agree that this is a hidden jewel! We've not found many National Forest CGs that have hookups or are big enough for our rig. The main thing we had a problem with was that the directions to the CG on the USDA Forest website could have had some additional instructions especially since we ended up arriving after dark. Their directions tell you to go to Webster Parish Road 111, but the highway road sign says "Caney Lakes Rd". The Webster Parish road sign is on the road side (front) of the sign post making it parallel to the road you are traveling and it cannot be seen until you are even with it. We ended up missing the road and had to turn our 38" FW around on a 2 lane road. Not fun! But we did finally make it and were pleasantly pleased. We only stayed overnight on 2 different nights, but would like to return. There is not a lot of lighting (street lights)at this park which is ok with us. Just be sure to have a flashlight handy if you need to be out at night. Another observation we found is that the sites that are "Walkup only" have an Open sign on them and the ones that are reservable have a "Reserved" sign on them, but if they have no dates on them they are basically "open" as well. Check with the host but he was the one who told us we could use one with Reserved on it since we were only staying overnight and it had no dates on it. We payed the $15. rate as we are not eligible for the $9.50 discounted rate. We camped at Beaver Dam Campground / Caney Lakes Recreation Area in a Fifth Wheel.
