If you are in a fill sized class A coach or 40' fifth wheel you have better options on Mt. Desert Island. This was a tent campground decades ago that converted to accommodate trailers. There are four 50 amp sites near the office in a circle, but they are configured awkwardly and not set up for big rigs. We had a choice of having our door open into a tree or into our sewer hookup. Also, they do little maintenance on trees adjacent to the interior roadways so maneuvering will result in scraping limbs along the coach side. On the positive side, the electric worked well. Water pressure was low varying between 20 and 40 psi. Sewer connection was an old PVC pipe with no threads and was so high above the ground that the sewer connection was uphill. WIFI with my signal amplifier worked well most of the time, but we were right next to the office, so this might not have been so good farther away. At this site my satellite dish worked well. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Motorhome.

The inner roads are a dirt/gravel mixture, and a lot of dust. We walked the route to our spot as the two staff members had different opinions on the route to take. We stayed 7 nights , added 2 extra nights to the original booking and was charged 10.00 extra for doing so. It's called a change fee. I have never been charged a fee by a private camp ground to add days. 45.15 a night for elec, water and cable. Our site 327, is a back in and hook ups are at the front of your rig. So you can only back in as far as you can reach with water, cable and electric. 2 very large cement blocks were in the middle of the parking spot where your rv goes, took 2 of us to move each. The tow vehicle had to park sideways in front of the rv to fit. Our picnic table had one side that was breaking if you sat on it. We were surrounded by seasonal campers, one played music loudly every day we were there and allowed his dog to run freely. The park has a lot of seasonal sites, a little like a trailer park in appearance as their areas were loaded with stuff to include empty beer cans on the ground. bathrooms/showers are all in the same building, down the middle is separate men and women's toilets. On the right and left side are the unisex showers, you use a code to get. The showers are large, plenty of hot water but open at the top. Men or women are in the showers next to you. There was always hair in the showers. They appeared as if they needed a good scrubbing. Bathrooms were semi clean, trash in stalls needed to be dumped more often then what they were. Laundry room has Cold water only. I heard dogs barking several times and only saw one running freely. If your site is close to the border you will have a fence next to you. Things I would like to see change, cleaner showers, women's showers separate from the men's, an on line description of your site (hookups are in front of the Rv), no change fee (some times your site has issues) I would not camp here again. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Motorhome.

I will preface this by saying that this is the first time I've ever given a campground a bad review. Our site seemed to be an afterthought with no real boundaries, no gravel, not level, low water pressure, and so many tree roots, it was not possible to even use our rug or chairs. The picnic table was so nasty we did not use it (even though they had brand new ones at their workshop). The internet is non-existent unless you sit right outside the camp store. They have about 7 access points, of which 6 do not work. So, even when you're sitting at the office, if your device grabs one of the other 6 access points, it won't work. Even then, you'll get 1 Mbps at best. Normally, this would not be an issue as I'd just use my hotspot. On Mount Desert Island, cell towers are virtually non-existent so you will get 1 bar of 1x if you're lucky. I asked the staff for 2 days to PLEASE reboot their system and they chose to do nothing because it was fine for them in the office. They will even feign surprise when you tell them it's not working. When pushed, they say that you can go sit outside the office if you need a connection. The TV connection at our site was unusable. They came to the site and confirmed, "yep, it's not working". When we asked to move sites after the first night, we were told that nothing was available. For the remainder of our stay, the site next to us (level, gravel, etc) sat unused. In other words, this staff seemed not to care that we had a crappy site, internet, TV, etc. The good news is, there is so much to see on MDI that we were gone most of the time. But, if you're like me and need to get a little work done in the evenings, plan on driving into town and sitting in front of the library. Finally, when considering this campground, we found it was far away from just about everything (Bar Harbor, Schoodic Point, etc). This place has LOTS of potential, but is in desperate need of an attitude adjustment. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Motorhome.

You MUST drive to Schoodic Point...one of the prettiest spots we've ever seen. We also loved the "Island Cruises" boat tour to Frenchboro Island. Highly recommend Jordan Pond for the hike and the atmosphere in the restaurant...food was good.

We stayed in the cabin called 'The Potting shed'. Cute little cabin that sleeps 4. Outside had a picnic table, gas grill, and fire ring. Inside has a fridge and microwave, plus a small coffee pot. Wonderful little campground, clean bathrooms, great showers. Cabins are great, camp sites looked great, some smaller than others, looked tight for those oversized 5th wheel style campers, but it's a CAMPGROUND not an RV Park, and that's whats great about it. It was woodsy and rustic and quiet. It's on the quiet side of the island, away from all the loud noises. It takes a good 1/2 hour to get to the Acadia entrance and a bit longer to get to Bar Harbor.. again that's what's great about it! We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Cabin.

Acadia National Park is close by, Bar Harbor, but there is also Southwest Harbor, Seawall, Bass Harbor and Northeast Harbor that are all close by and great to explore. If you want a change up from the typical seafood on the island, head to Mainly Meats, across from the mini golf place. Great BBQ!!

Stayed a week and the campground is very quiet. Sites are close together but doable. Had no problem getting in and out. Didn't use many of the facilities (pool closed already for season). Convenient to Bar Harbor attractions. Can walk down to the lighthouse. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice campground close to Bass Harbor light house. Sites are close. Some sites don't make a lot of sense as to their layout. Showers are fine (free). Some great restaurants are close. Thurston's Lobster Pound and Upper Deck were two. Acadia Park is wonderful place to enjoy. If you are in to tourist locations, then Bar Harbor would be the way to go.

We stayed here to see a different part of Acadia. Very close to Bass Harbor Lighthouse, so frequent photo visits were easy. Saw parts of Acadia and surrounding area that are terrific. Harbors, small towns. BUT - a long drive to Bar Harbor and park entrance. This park is old, run down, and they don't put much into maintenance. Bathhouse is clean. Water pressure up and down like a yo-yo. This is a CAMPGROUND, not an RV park. Spaces are tight and challenging to get into. Took us 15 minutes to back into our space, finally called it quits and swung around and came through the site behind us, like a pull-through. Only way we could get into our site. Have no idea how we will get out. Wi-fi some of the worst we have ever experienced. On and off, more off than on. Suddenly dropped from strong signal, then cannot get back on. Pathetic. In our opinion, the $50 a night is OUTRAGEOUS. Only discount is stay six nights and get seventh night free during tourist season. Would have happily paid the same or a bit more up nearer to the entrance to Acadia. Very disappointing place. Would not recommend under any circumstances - many other nicer parks for similar amounts. The whole northeast is one huge price gouge, in our experience. But then, we have only been full-timing for two years, and have stayed in RV parks from Florida to California to Alaska to Maine. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Be sure to visit Thurston's on the water for a terrific dinner overlooking the harbor. Ask for directions. Bass Harbor lighthouse is just down the road - it is NOT a 10 minute walk as promoted by Bass Harbor Campground. Plan on 20 minutes each way, or drive it and hope to find a parking spot. Small town of Southwest Harbor a real delight. Plenty to see around this part of Acadia and surrounding area.

Bass Harbor is a nice getaway on southwest Mount Desert Island. Close to the ocean, it's cool and breezy and the humidity isn't bothersome. They are well-organized and offer a restful environment. Our space 326 is shaded by pitch pines, so you must wash the sap off car and trailer. The office lent us a honey wagon to empty our sewage, but there are plenty of spaces with sewer hookups. Kids have their own playground. Outside sinks helped BBQ wash-up. Showers are always hot. Trash and recycling available. So close to the ocean you can hear the fishing boats, fog horns and bells. Sites are grassy with good access and pretty level.

Staff are very friendly and keep the place in good shape. We had campfires every night in the rock-lined fire pits and cooked in the coals. The bugs weren't that bad since this place often has a breeze.

This campground doesn't refund early departures or rainouts and you must pay upfront, so plan ahead.

Watch out for traffic; the roads are filled with people and vehicles. Most roads are narrow, two lane, so drive carefully with trailers and RVs. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Mount Desert holds Acadia National Park. Visit Cadillac Mountain for easternmost U.S. sunrise. Bar Harbor shops. Visit Acadia National Park's many events and trails: Jordan Pond popovers. Many park trails are handicap accessible. Natural Seawall tidal pools. Thunder Hole gives exciting wave action with splash and boom. Lobster pounds, gourmet foodie shops, normal supermarkets. See Bass Harbor Light House and walk the trails.

As someone else mentioned, this campground IS NOT big rig friendly. The inner roads are incredibly tight with many obstacles in the way. Fences, rocks, railroad ties, and other campers. Utilities are fine. Sites are not level. Dog walk is overgrown with grass and weeds. Bathrooms are dated but adequate. We were there before the busy season. Can't imagine it with a full camp. We will find another campground as long as we are in a bigger camper/fifth wheel. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Very busy camp, but is was the middle of August and next to Acadia National Park. Sites are close together. Shuttle bus stops across the street, very convenient. Staff was very polite and helpful. Not sure if we would stay there again as it was busy and the sites close together, not our first choice, but the location cannot be beat. We camped at Bass Harbor Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

I was very happy with the quiet, rustic feel of this campground that has all the amenities and very friendly staff. The bathrooms/showers are kept nicely and the campground is almost part of Acadia National Park (most of the National Park is around it). The free shuttle bus provides an alternative to driving to many of the places to see in the area. I would definitely recommend it (pet friendly too). We stayed at this campground in July 2009, the people were very friendly and nice, and the area was amazing, right near Acadia National Park, however the sites for trailers were way too close together and hardly any room to park a truck on your site,I would not recommend this park for trailers or rv's because the sites were right on top of one another.
