This campground is also known as Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping and is part of Wolfe's Neck Center, a nonprofit working farm which hosts many activities related to sustainable farming practices. We camped in the loop with 30 amp power and water hookups. The sites are smallish and not private if you are on the inside of the loop. Showers are located near the office as well as the farm cafe where food is available. They provide a pump out service on Tuesdays and Fridays for $20. There are many farm related activities available to participate in for a small fee. You can also wander around the barns for free. Our daughter attended Farm Camp during our stay. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Odd place - we camped at a slow time so there were plenty of sites. We chose an 'oceanfront' because those sites were mostly empty. We could kinda see the water thru the trees. We chose no hook-ups since we didn't need them, so price is 'OUCH'. The grounds are lovely - but the place is odd. Campsites scattered about, mostly no hookups. Trash dumpster was 2/3 mile from our site. There were stacks of kayaks lying around - maybe it is a summer camp for kids? It's supposed to be a farm, but not that many animals for a 'farm' - more like a petting zoo. The two women in office knew nothing about farming (I know a bit), nor much about what goes on there. We only needed a place for one night - it worked for that - but wow, I think given the price and how crowded it must be if all sites are full = nightmare. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Motorhome.

Used to love this place until they installed a very small and brightly-lit small house in the next campsite yesterday. Staff members have special privileges apparently. Doesn't feel like the same nice wilderness campground now. The water pressure is low especially in the showers. Echo other reviews. Adequate facilities. Toilet pits, concrete showers. Lots of tent campers so park facilities were heavily used. We have a tote cart for sewer, so had to 'tote' my cart over gravel about 1/4 mile. We camped in a meadow, which was actually very quaint. Water pressure was not very good and on our second night water pressure went away altogether. Better next morning. In talking with camp staff water seems to be a periodic issue. Still, scenic, convenient to Freeport and we would stay here again. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Fifth Wheel.

This is a working farm and might not be for everyone but we found it great. Our site 806 was right on Casco Bay. Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagle and Osprey fishing right outside our window. On the farm side cows, sheep and tractors farming the fields, definitely a different experience for camping. Clean bathrooms, free showers and a staff that simply can't do enough for you. I liked the fact that campground fees are used to support this historic 600+ acre farm. Campers can hike along the shoreline and visit the garden and livestock (cows and sheep). The office staff very friendly and helpful. Dump station, trash bin, & recycle bins are behind the office. The only reason I didn't rate the campground a 10 is because the levelness of the sites varies. But this won't stop me from coming back! Note that their sites have been renumbered but there's a cross-reference on their website. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Truck Camper.

Tips for other Campers:

Take time to experience some of the farm, perhaps timing your visit to attend one of their scheduled events. And note that you may experience some farm-related aspects such as flies or smells in some sites.

Beautiful view of the ocean, wonderful place to set and soak up the salt air. The prime sites book ahead of time so if you're dropping in for a night don't expect to be on the water.

Great place for families and day tripping.

We were disappointed with the respect of a few other campers feeling free to walk through our site which was right next to visitor parking.

No electric or water hook ups which is worth the trade off for the view, however other campers washing their dishes at the water faucet and leaving food and gray water wasn't cool! We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Campground overall was nice. Once on my site there was more usable room behind trailer than in front. Once the steps were put down there was a gully that forced you to step up from the side instead of right in front. Campground is huge with enough walking to do to turn your legs into mush. Campground is situated on Casco Bay with plenty of views to take in if you walk to the other side.Campground has a snack shack and offers a Lobster and steamers dinner that is priced very fair. There are dog doo trash cans and empty bags all through out the campground. The dumping station is an odd set up where you have to do kind of a u-turn. This is not a problem unless there are cars parked in your continuing path. I saw a couple of trailers backing out into the road because of this.I decided not to dump because of this.Would consider going back but would want to choose my site. We were camping in a meadow setup. The site was level, but the smell for the entire area from the pit toilet was terrible. We could not leave our windows open or grill outside; therefore, had to stay away as much as possible. All the campsites had the same trouble. The only WiFi is by the camp store. We would definitely not stay here again. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

In many ways, this campground was a gem: lots of wooded and relatively private sites, a diverse array of well-planned activities, friendly and helpful staff members, a nicely equipped camp store, nighttime quiet hours that appear to be nearly-universally respected, scenic hiking trails, and a magnificent and beautiful setting enhanced by the presence of a well maintained working farm. On the other hand, though, there was only one modern bathroom/shower facility, located near the entrance (at quite a distance from many of the sites), with the alternative to that facility being a number of rather primitive outhouses located throughout the camping area; there was a charge for use of the shower; security was nonexistent at night (no gates or attendants at all); and the aroma of cows/manure at times permeated much of the campground and surrounding facility. The positives, in our view, outweigh the negatives, and we hope to return in the future to this campground, which is quite close to the wonderful town of Freeport with its terrific shopping, eclectic culinary delights, and cosmopolitan ambiance. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Tent.

Pros: Beautiful serene, idyllic views of Casco Bay. Clean water and friendly staff. Cons: Pricey. Was charged $31 for non-ocean-front campsite. $46 for ocean-front sites! They overcharged us. Said it was $26 on the phone but charged us $31. One customer called the police because of a charge card issue. Stinky latrines, and no flush toilets. Farm attractions (hayride) was not available. The showers were antiquated. Pot holes aplenty. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Tent.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! We loved everything about our stay here from the Lobster Bake to the spacious sites with a variety of styles from meadow to bay to forest. Friendly staff. Kayak rentals. Farm animals you can visit!! The doors to the main restrooms should be shut. It lets in a ton of bugs in the toilet and shower areas. Near the sites are only pit toilets: which might be a turn off for some. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Motorhome.

Camping is mostly around the periphery of a big, working farm and as such is charming for those who want this experience. The premium water-view sites don't have electric and many are more pop-top and tent oriented. We did fine Site #170 and #177 probably has the best view. I wouldn't recommend Recompense for anything much over 30 foot RV. Again no electricity in the water view sites. Showers are clean and modern but cost $1.00 for 10 minutes. Wireless is limited directly from of the Camp Office but works fine there. Cell reception was adequate. The peace, quite, and cool evening breeze was appreciated. We would certainly camp here again. This is a very nice camping area. There are a variety of site options form ocean view, to wooded, or in a field. Our site was very level and easy to back into. The staff is friendly and accommodating. This campground is part of a working farm and has a barn that you are able to visit at any time. One down side is the dump site is a little tight to get into. Check out their website as they run several specials throughout the summer. We camped at Wolfe's Neck Oceanfront Camping (formerly Recompence Shore Campground) in a Travel Trailer.

This campground has friendly staff that work at the office. However, this campground is not big rig friendly. The dirt roads are narrow with pot-holes and branches hanging low. We have a fifth wheel and it was difficult to maneuver in this campground. The dumping station would be more accessible if it was a pull through. Instead, you must back-up after emptying the tanks. Thankfully, there were no others waiting to use the dump station. This is a quiet campground if that is your priority.
