Overall Rating:

A very nice campground, feels a bit like an RV resort with pool, playground, sports field, but also like a real campground, lots of trees, camp fires, and a rustic feel. Two hiking trails lead straight into Acadia National Park which was great for daily dog walks as well as a half-day hike straight from the campground. It's a 30 minute drive to downtown Bar Harbor by car, a little longer by bus. Our premium site was concrete, level, and a very nice size (length and width). We had no Verizon reception at all, but AT&T worked quite well, though we didn't try our cell booster. The WiFi usually worked but was usually very slow. The campground allowed us to receive Amazon deliveries during our stay which was nice. Checking in was a bit difficult as there's no good area to park large RVs while checking in, and the park service bus comes in and out regularly as well. We had trouble backing into our site because of large untrimmed tree branches right along the main roadway. We'd stay again. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Motorhome.

Nice shaded site. Gravel pad. We also had a wooden platform for the kid's tent. Nice playground and pool. Great staff - so helpful about answering questions about the area. Very quiet campground. Nice, free island shuttle service stops at campground. Great cable tv. Wi-Fi rarely worked but they had someone working on a stronger system. No internet service on my Verizon cell phone though we could call and text. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Acadia National Park is about 15 minutes away. Had a great pita sandwich at Eat a Pita in Southwest Harbor.

Nice, semi-rustic, clean, well maintained, friendly park. This campground is on "The Quiet Side" of Mount Desert Island with quick access to a small grocery and the quaint town of Southwest Harbor. It was a short, easy drive to Bass Harbor, Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. All RV sites have a gravel drive and cement parking pad/patio, nice picnic table and a fire ring. Electrical, water and sewer were all good. We had a 50 AMP back in site (#90) that was easy to get into and out of. The pool is large and sparkling. Trees are maintained for easy navigating on interior roads. AT&T connectivity was one bar LTE. Camp cable had dozens of channels. WIFI was adequate during the week. The campground abuts Echo Lake, and it can be accessed from Smuggler's Den with an easy hike. This camp was a nice place from which to enjoy the beauty and amusements available on Mount Desert Island. We would stay here again. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

1) Bass Harbor Lighthouse is pretty if you view it from the rocks (path is to the left of the parking lot). 2) Thurston's Lobster Pound in Bernard was the best and cheapest. 3) Beal's Lobster Pound was good. 4) Bar Harbor Whale Watch Company in Bar Harbor had large ships for their Whale and Puffin Tour. Don't miss the drive AND hike around Cadillac Mountain. Hiking the seawall is lovely. Gas is easy to find on the Island, but there are not many grocery stores.

Park very well maintained and easy to maneuver with our 37 foot motorhome and toad. Site was roomy with full hookups, cable TV and 50 amp service. Cable TV worked great. Staff was helpful and friendly. Very handy to Bar Harbor and other destinations. Verizon voice signal was good, there was no usable data signal but the park wifi worked great and was fast. Overall a good experience and we will return. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Motorhome.

Overall Rating:

Site was huge, fairly level, and well-shaded. Was kind of U-shaped. Easily fit our pop-up, TV, and screen house. Probably could have fit a tent and additional vehicle, as well. Perfect location for those traveling with small kids, as it was just a stone's throw from both the bathhouse and playground. This is a really nice, clean, well-maintained campground. They have everything, from rustic tent sites with mountain views, to a full hookup section that looks like a small-scale KOA. Camp store was well-stocked, playground and pool looked brand new, and the bath house, while old, was among the brightest and cleanest I've ever seen in a private campground. Very impressive, especially given the volume of campers staying there. They also had free hot showers, which apparently is a rarity on Mt. Desert Island. Coin-operated laundry room on-site, which was very convenient. Nice large dish washing sink on the outside of the bath house. The free Island Explorer shuttle bus also makes stops right at the office. Overall, this is a great campground, and an excellent "home base" from which to explore Acadia and Mt. Desert Island. Would not hesitate to return if we find ourselves up in Maine again. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

SW Harbor is a cute little town, with many shops, restaurants, etc. If you drive about 25 minutes to the other side of the island, you'll be in the heart of Bar Harbor, Acadia, etc. All very beautiful, and worth the trip. However, almost everywhere we went was very crowded, and we were there at the very tail end of peak season, after many kids had already gone back to school. From what I've read, and what we were told by locals, it's a mob scene during July and much of August.

Noisy group encompassing 3 sites adjacent to me with party almost nightly till close to midnight. Dogs barking from many sights & dog poop from neighbors dog found in my site. People don't control their dogs. Extra cars arrived to party campers & used empty sites for extra parking. Overcrowded campsite had more than a dozen people. Management too nice so campers get away with this imo. Tried to get another site due to the neighbor problem & was refused, I would never go back to this campground We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Visit Cadillac Mtn. Food was expensive at the lobster pounds. Comparable to a regular restaurant but without the services. Lobster was really good though. Expect to drive at least 50 miles a day to see all the areas

Very nice campground. Spacious sites. Staff is extremely friendly! Nice heated pool. My only complaint our site,#91, held water. They are freshly paved but we always had standing water. This campground would have received a 10 but the standing water was a drawback. We will definitely stay here again. Very well cared for facility. This is our second time here. Last fall we stayed in a cabin. This fall we brought our travel trailer. From making the reservation online to the check-in process, the people here have been accommodating and helpful. The campground is clean and well maintained. They obviously take pride in their facility. Garbage areas are neat and clean, there is a doggy station for pet waste disposal, the pool area looked great, the playground looks new and the options in it are quite diverse. Those in tents have several options, from secluded wooded areas to sites closer to the bathroom. Full hook-up sites are a bit closer together, with some having cement pads. Other sites have gravel and/or grass on them. Our site needed no blocks etc - perfectly level. We will continue to come here each fall. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Smuggler's Den is a large RV park near Acadia National Park. We had a back-in site near the front, but traffic noise was not an issue. Management people were very nice and the store was stocked with some essentials, and a few goodies. Our site was mostly shady but enough sun to keep some grass growing, a nice picnic table and fire-pit, and all hookups were good. The WiFi was good most of the time, but there was almost no cell phone signal. The restrooms/showers were a bit dated but clean, as was the laundry area (a bit pricey). The pool and playground area looked clean and were fairly busy. We would definitely stay here again. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The ice cream/hot dog place near the front entrance is great! However, they have limited hours so check that before going over there. Many nice places to eat in Southwest Harbor. While we avoided Bar Harbor (too commercial) we did, and recommend, the Bar Trail where you can walk over to the island. Also, Schoodic Head is less visited so parking is assured. National Park parking was a BIG problem so use the free shuttle if you can.

Southwest Harbor is on Desert Island, and is right next to Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor is on the opposite side of Desert Island from Bar Harbor. Bar Harbor is the touristy side of the island, and Southwest Harbor is the "quiet" side. The sites are decent size, but the interior roads are a bit narrow. One issue here was that the hookups were all way in the back of the site, so extra sewer hose is a good idea here. We had a premium site that was a paved back in with patio. The trees were a little thick, but we managed to get satellite by using my cell phone app to locate the Direct TV satellites. The restrooms were clean, but not handicapped accessible. High thresholds and small doors would make it impossible for wheel chair access. We paid $67 a night which is a bit pricey, but this is one of those places where location is key. This park is in close proximity to Acadia National Park, and we went into the park several days in different directions. This area is amazingly scenic and we did a lot of driving and hiking to take in the fabulous vistas. Exploring Bar Harbor was also a lot of fun, we sampled some of the local eateries. We had an end site, #122 which is also right across from the pool. Sometimes a site near the pool is noisy, but we never had a problem even though the pool was popular all day long. The campground offers good strong WiFi, which was important as the Verizon air card struggled during the day. We used the park WiFi during the days and at night like after 7 PM I could switch back to our WiFi. One unusual feature here was that the area's municipal bus line ran into the park to pick up and drop off passengers. If you were a bus rider it was convenient, but seeing the bus go by our site several times a day was a bit odd. I got used to it eventually. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Motorhome.

This park is big rig friendly, close to Acadia National park, and very quiet. There is ample room between sites, some open, and some wooded sites. Some sites have concert slabs that are plenty large. The electrical is 50/30 amp, with 40psi water pressure. Sewer hookups are at the correct height and placement. This park is dog friendly with a huge mowed field for exercise. There are several trails to hike on and you are very close to Acadia park trails. The bath rooms are clean and the showers have ample hot water and are free. The ocean is about a 15 minute drive. They sell fresh Maine lobster at the CG store and have pots available for cooking the lobster. Most sites have a large picnic table and fire ring. The staff is friendly. $50 per night seems a bit high, but the CG is in a prime location. I would have given the CG a score of 10 had it featured a view of the ocean or mountains. We will stay here again. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Nice, quiet park with many permanent residents. We had a fairly level site near the front of the park. Clean restrooms with hot showers. The free Island Explorer Bus stops in the campground and takes about 30 minutes to get to Village Green in Bar harbor. The bus is on a limited schedule after Labor Day, but it is still the best way to get to town. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Motorhome.

Great, clean, well run campground with large sites. About 15-20 minutes to downtown Bar Harbor. Only 1 mile to Southwest Harbor. Shuttle service seems to run pretty regularly but we didn't use it. Everything was very clean. From planning and booking to check in, the staff was very efficient and helpful. We had 6 families in our group. They were very helpful with group booking. The camp store doesn't have much other than some basic necessities but there's a market less than a 1/2 mile away. They DO sell fresh lobsters right in the camp store and provide the pot and claw crackers free of charge to borrow. Wifi was decent. Close to hiking trails and ponds for kayaking. We would def stay here again and recommend to others. We camped at Smuggler's Den Campground in a Travel Trailer.
