This would be an almost perfect campground if it had showers. It's camping like it should be, rather than an amusement park with campsites. It has beautiful hiking trails, sweet biking trails, free shuttles to some of the most beautiful scenery in the eastern U.S., clean and up-to-date everything . . . except showers. Sorry tent campers. If it did have showers, it would be my current standard or gauge for what a great campground should be. It's still near the top and a great achievement by the National Park Service. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

This campground is on the quieter side of Acadia National Park, but the views and trails are just as impressive as the Bar Harbor area. Do both, but you'll find yourself less stressed on the Schoodic side.

Overall Rating:

This is a terrific National Park. Designed and built for the kind of "camping" Americans do these days. We were in the B section. Almost all pull through, able to accommodate the largest RVs, water and electric. The A section is larger and most spots would accommodate large RVs, electric only. This is not the "Bar Harbor experience." There are no T shirt shops, no fudge shops. This is Acadia. Great drives along the rocky Maine coast. Great bicycle paths, great hiking. Great sites for everything from large motor homes to small walk-in tent sites. Park operates a free shuttle all along the peninsula, including the town of Winter Harbor, where there are restaurants and some shopping. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Lovely, large, level spaces. Decent privacy from other campers although we could hear kids at spot behind our. We stayed in Loop A to be away from motor homes. Loop B has both electric and water. Loop A has electric only. Restrooms and entire park are new as of 2015, so kept immaculate. Clean, big outdoor dish sink at restrooms. Wood sold nearby at VERY reasonable cost. Note, showers are available at a commercial facility in Otter Point close to other NPS campgroud. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Truck Camper.

This is the second season for Schoodic Woods Campground the campground is extremely well laid out with wide oversized sights and considerable privacy. A loop is for tents and small RV's all A loop sites have 15/30/50 amp service. A loop also has hike in sites without electricity and fire pits. B loop is mostly pull through large sites with electric and water. No sewer at any sites (except host sites) however dump station is located at campground. This is a remote section of Acadia NP with it's own walking/ bike parks as well as hiking trails it is far from the hustle and bustle of Bar Harbor. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Acadia National Park - Schoodic Woods Campground, Winter Harbor, Maine Cost with w & e $40 Golden Age pass will be less but electricity is not part of the pass. There is a Acadia National Park entrance fee or Golden Age pass.

This campground was built through donations and with NPS guidelines. It was then turned over to the NPS and opened just last fall for five weeks. This is the first full season for this beautiful park. Two loops - A Loop with about 50 sites, twelve of those have 30 amps and the rest 20 amps. A walk in tent area with 9 sites all carry in. The B Loop has 33 sites with w& 30/50 amps. The sites are huge with privacy and as these trees grow there will be even more shade in the next ten years. The bathrooms are clean, clean, clean and new. No showers and the rangers can tell you where to go for fee showers in the area. Everything is new here bike trails on gravel, roads, sites, dump station, and the lighted walks all around the park with trail signs. Pets are welcome and even on the free shuttles that go around the area to Schoodic Point and the villages in the area. The park has bags around the park to pick up after your pet. It would be nice for everyone to use them. Great drivers on the free shuttles, you wave them down anywhere and if you want to be dropped off in the villages at a restaurant they will take you to the door as long as its along the route. The check in lodge is beautiful with a big fireplace, seats and rangers to help you with places to see. Outside they have a waiting area with benches, bike and pet tie up poles and water bowls for your pets. This section of Acadia takes about an hour plus from the Bar Harbor area to get here 17 miles north of Ellsworth and it is beautiful. Sometimes you can see seal pups on the rocks as you ride around or hike. Bike trails go from the campground to the south and north loop as well as to Winter Harbor. There are three little villages along this route and the. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Campground is only 1 year old, and was designed for modern equipment. The site was HUGE! We had a trailer and reserved a site that said it was good for up to 20 feet, but the driveway was over 60 feet long. No issue getting in/or or parking the tow vehicle. Only other site we could see from our site was directly across from us. No water on the A loop, but the B loop has both W/E. Bike trail around the park was great, little traffic (unlike on main peninsula). Didn't use the ferry to Bar Harbor, but understand one is available. Got 6 or so TV channels from the antenna, and a weak WiFi from the rangers. Great trip! We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Travel Trailer.

This would be a 10 if it were a bit closer to Mt Desert Island, but perhaps the distance limits the crowds and it has everything else right for a NPS campground. They offer group, tent, limited service RV sites and nice long level pullthroughs with good 20/30/50A service and water. The wifi worked well at our site. OTA TV is a bust, so bring a dish if you want to watch. The campground was built by an anonymous person(s) along with 8.5 miles of newly constructed bike paths, 4 miles of hiking trails and it and about 1400 acres of land adjacent to the existing NPS land were donated to the NPS upon completion last year. Tax dollars and park fees could not have built a nicer facility. Winter harbor has a small grocery and the surrounding villages all host "lobstah" shacks and restaurants. Firewood is not sold in the campground, but there are several honor-box wood sheds along the side of the roads outside of the park. Area is great for bicycles. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Bar Harbor is 1+ hr drive. Passenger ferry service between nearby Winter Harbor & Bar Harbor offers a scenic ride. The point loop road is 1-way and limited to vehicles <20' & has several parking areas to view waves crashing on the rocky shore bringing life the scenes seen on postcards of the Maine coast. Free shuttle bus is available. Time visits to the incoming tides for best activity. A small road leads to the summit in the middle of the peninsula; also by several hiking trails.

This is how all campgrounds should be. I have been to places where there might be a better view from the campsite but the facilities here are outstanding. Be sure to bring your bike if you have one as the bike trails are very enjoyable. You can travel around the entire park by bike and if you get tired you can load your bike on the free shuttle bus which also goes into the neighboring towns. Many things to do in the area including taking the passenger ferry to Bar Harbor. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

This park is only 1 year old and we found it quite by accident last spring while trying to find a place to camp by Acadia NP. We think we had the absolute best spot (B6) as it was long, level and surrounded on both sides by tall trees. The Rangers and volunteers at the office are friendly and helpful, and we were able to buy a trail map of the peninsula for a nominal fee that allowed us to hike the area and enjoy this beautiful place. Sites are well maintained and campground is mostly quiet, except for the occasional barking dog. Bears are a concern here, so all cooking tools, including grills had to be stored inside overnight. This is the Maine we were looking for when we planned our first trip to New England. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

This absolutely beautiful National Park Campground is roughly 1 year new and high on our list of favorites. All roads are paved throughout the campground and the RV sites have clean, crushed stone with no dirt or sand. The park offers a community dumping station that is immaculate. The surroundings are beautiful and far enough from other campers to be quiet and serene. Nearby Winter Harbor is pleasant and the loop around Schoodic Point is incredible (note, RVs longer than 20 ft are prohibited from the loop). Fortunately, the park provides a shuttle service to see all the sights. This campground is a bit distance from Bar Harbor (~45 min.) but to avoid the crowds it was a worth the drive. There is, however, a ferry to Bar Harbor. We will return! We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

This park is a new park that just opened Labor Day 2015. Nice level sites, plenty of room in between sites. You hardly see any other campers. 50amp Electric and Water. Paved interior roads. All utilities worked very well, WIFI fairly good. Would stay here again. If you like hiking/biking, there is plenty to do. Otherwise, there is a ferry over to Bar Harbor ($24/adult roundtrip). Located in Acadia National Park so obviously lots of pretty scenery. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Wow. A great campground on the quiet side of Acadia National Park. Opened in September 2015, the campground is in great shape. The asphalt interior roads are without a blemish or pothole...there are sites for everyone, even big rigs like ours. Many sites exceed 60 feet in length. You actually have 100 amps of power (good for rigs that have only 30 amp service..you can plug in an extension cord and get another 20 amps if you need it) Many sites have good satellite reception though some are blocked by trees...Local tv from Bangor gives you a couple of stations and the local news. There are no showers in this campground..and no sewers...but there is a dump station. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.

Take the ferry from Winter Harbor to Bar Harbor (passenger and bike only) and then ride the free park service bus systems to avoid driving in overcrowded Bar Harbor. And, have lunch at the Jordan Pond restaurant and gorge yourself on popovers, and take a carriage ride through the dense forest on the quiet carriage roads either before or after lunch.

Read a very positive review of this new park in Downeast magazine and booked a one night reservation on line. (Bookings for RV sites this summer are going fast.)We reserved site B-7, which was a pull through and perfect for our 20 foot Roadtrek Versatile. God, easily accessible 30 amp power and water at the site. Gravel base. Picnic table and a fire ring. Some other RV sites had semi-mature white pines to provide some shade; ours had none. Tiny white pine saplings in cardboard planting pots didn't cut it. Cute, though. The check in process was swift, the ranger who processed our reservation was knowledgeable and cheerful. Because of the modest length of our Roadtrek she said we could drive the Schoodic loop road to the ocean point. Larger RVs and those without toads had to take the free shuttle to see the peninsula. (Pets are allowed on the shuttle, we were told.) Restrooms were squeaky clean. No showers or hot water, however. We are Mainers and knew we were visiting during the June black fly season, and those blood-drawing little beasties were out in force. Mosquitos too, of course, at sundown. Do NOT leave any windows open in your camper. Though we were glad to have visited, and were impressed with the cleanliness and level of service from the Ranger staff, once we'd made the loop road drive (two hours), there is nothing else to do. Due to the mosquitos and flies we didn't take advantage of the educational program on offer that evening at the park amphitheater. People around us seemed content to "chill" at their sites. Lots of cyclists on the loop road, so that seemed to be the thing here. Not sure what a family with teenagers would do for an entire week. We camped at Schoodic Woods Campground in a Motorhome.
