Reiterating what others have stated: approach from the west and you're OK; approach from the east and beware the 11 foot bridge (and we saw NO warning signs!!); 30 amp only; entry road is indeed steep, but not really a problem unless your vehicle is underpowered; a few sites looked like they would require more care to get into with larger rigs. Other tidbits we learned: sites are pretty widely spaced and thus quite private; very wooded which makes it a nice 10 degrees cooler, but forget about satellite anywhere; the potable water is in one spot and the dump is in another and both are on the inside "electric" loop; you must use their wood, but they have plenty; you have to make a 90 degree turn to exit, which isn't a big deal unless there are cars queued up at the entrance like when we left --- we had to thread the needle; when leaving the park the entrance ramp on to Hwy 40 is very short, so you'll have to wait for a gap and/or floor it. As others have stated, this is a great state park to get away from it all with a classic feel and hiking trails, pavillions, ranger programs and the quiet of the woods at night. We didn't explore the trails or woods as we used this as a base for exploring Baltimore, so we went into the city every day. Our site was 429, the last on the electric loop, which is very long and has the added advantage that you can go the wrong way on the one way road for about 20 yards and pull right into your driveway without having to go all the way around the loop when returning to camp. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Fifth Wheel.

Good for what it was - a reasonable state park very close to Baltimore. We stayed here while visiting my daughter who lives in the city. Easy access into Baltimore. Most sites are spacious and look easy to get into. Rest rooms were dirty and didn't appear to be cleaned during our stay. Our site was very difficult to get into, though the campground hosts were familiar with it and spent a half hour with us helping us jockey our rig back and forth to get in. We made a list of sites we will use next time, which does NOT include 427 - avoid that site if you have anything other than a small trailer or class B camper. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Travel Trailer.

The registration area is away from the camping area and if arriving from the East is hard to access due to a 11 foot underpass restriction. RV sites use the inner loop which has 30 amp power but no water. Sites are about 30 feet apart. Residential housing is visible behind the campsites but we did not have noise problems. Only one place to take on fresh water or dump waste but we did not have to wait. Overall functional but not scenic. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Motorhome.

The site was nice and level, but a bit small, with a short driveway. We actually brought 2 vehicles this time, and it was really tight. Fair amount of trees surrounding our site, but since there are still very few leaves, it felt way closer and less private. This campground is very popular, and set up as two loops; an inner loop with electric sites, and a more spread-out outer loop with non-electric, tent-only sites. The inner loop was completely full, and the sites were just too closely spaced for my preferences. There were a few sites with a little extra room and privacy (419 and 420 caught my eye), but for the most part they were packed in pretty tightly. If you're a tent camper and don't need electric, the sites on the outer loop were quite nice and private. Bath house was old, small, and not exceptionally clean, but adequate for our needs. Did not use the showers this time. However, there are only 4 restroom stalls and 2 showers on the ladies side, so I can imagine the lines would be pretty crazy during the summer time. I expected lines this weekend, considering the campground was full, but we lucked out. There is also a dish washing room with a deep double sink, but this was old and dingy as well. I'm really surprised that the bath house hasn't been renovated yet, and that there is only one bath house and a single water spigot to service both loops, considering the size and popularity of the park. Normally in MD State Parks, there is a water pump every few sites. This is the largest state park in MD, and is very spread out, with several distinct areas. Almost every area has a great day use section, with nice pavilions and playgrounds. Overall, while this is a great park for day-tripping with a very convenient location, we just didn't care for the campground. If you don't mind the proximity to other campers and multiple scouting groups, or if you can make use of the more private tent sites, this might be a good option. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Tent Trailer.

Tips for other Campers:

Both Baltimore and Ellicott City have some great dining options, and Catonsville offers all the major stores and conveniences within a mile or two of the park. If you need anything, whether it be food, gas, or any type of service, it will be very quick and easy to find. Since you're so close to civilization, there is great cell service pretty much everywhere in the park.

I almost didn't make reservations because we would be arriving on a Sunday in early May. Glad I did because the park was full. We read all the great reviews about the park entrance and had no problem with the approach to the campground. If you are very organized you can get a senior citizens pass well in advance and save quite a bit. Monday was a different day in the park. Trails empty of people and the park quiet. We stayed here because of the proximity to BWI airport. The drive to pick up our family was easy and uneventful. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Motorhome.

I am not going to go into the ins and outs of driving to this park in a larger motor home so take the time to carefully read older reviews and the info on park web site. This park is very close to Baltimore and well used

The park is very shaded with black top roads and level graveled sites. As with most Maryland parks no water on the site. If you are lucky you can get a site close to a water spigot and run water to fill your tank with a long hose. In this case we were there only for two days so we did okay. Fire pit and picnic table were on the site.
We arrived west bound and went through the tunnel. Our height requirement was 10.5 feet so we cleared the tunnel height clearance of 11.1 feet. Not having been here before we didn't see any signs as to location of the campground; had to stop a ranger to ask directions. A couple of signs would have helped. Also the entrance was somewhat confusing at night after closing. You have to enter the exit to enter the code and go about 100 feet to the camping sites entrance and enter the same code again. This was a little redundant I thought. The lower rates for the camping fee is for senior citizens of Maryland, they enjoy about a 40% discount. All things considered, a very nice park. At&T was good. Loved this park. A little difficult to get in and out of but it was worth it. Be very careful on your approach to the park. One entrance has a very low bridge and most RVs can't get in. Call the park for directions. The road down to the campgrounds themselves is very steep, just go slow and be careful. Camp hosts were great, sites very clean. The sites are nicely spaced and shaded. Good walking all through the park. A walk down to the river a must. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Motorhome.

In the woods. Quiet. No TV reception, satallite or antenna and no cable. Only 15 miles from Baltimore. Ft McHenry is a great place to visit. It was the inspiration for the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key an attorney based on the battle fought there against the British during the War of 1812 that he observed while on a ship held by the British. Sites are spaceous, back-in with electric only. They do have a picnic table and a fire pit. No other amenities. Please note: Enter the park from the Westbound 40. The Eastbound 40 enterance has a bridge with a clearence of only 11'. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Motorhome.

This is a very large and beautiful state park. Tent sites are small, however, and difficult to get into if you are bigger than 24 feet. They have electricity only. This is a perfect park for people who love trees, but it felt quite claustrophobic to me. There are however, many beautiful areas. We never saw the camp host at all. Another nice Maryland State park. Fully wooded lots in trees with paved road. Reasonably close to Balt airport (wife was flying out). Only two negatives. You Must enter when headed East on US 40 as the entrance from Westbound US 40 has 11' max height restriction. No problems if entering from the west on eastbound 40. Others mentioned North or South US 40 but 40 is East West. Would definitely stay again.

Only other problem is that the attendant closes up at 4 PM and you need code to enter the camping area. Be sure to call ahead. Walk to the "Host" campsite is well over a mile from gate with steep hills. Level gravel campsites are nice. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Motorhome.

Rate is Maryland Senior rate (50%). Warning - be aware there is an 11'1" low clearance when entering from southbound Baltimore Pike. The park is in an urban area, but mostly quiet. Some traffic noise in the distance. The entry roads are narrow, curvy, and follow the rolling terrain. The individual sites are gravel and well defined with landscape timbers. The sites are close to level. There were some large class A and fifth wheel RVs in the camp. We would return. We stayed in site 411, but would look for one that is more level. This is a wonderful park, so close to Baltimore. The sites have plenty of space and some privacy. We camped in the electric loop #412, and it was level and placed on compacted soil. The bathrooms and showers were well kept and comfortable. It would be certainly more convenient to have water at each site. If you want to have a campfire, you must buy wood there. We heard that they stick closely to their check-in time of 3 P.M. We would stay here again. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Travel Trailer.

We stayed here to visit the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival that is located nearby. The campground is located off a very busy highway but has a wide selection of shopping nearby. There is a good variety of sites. The inner loop has electric hookups and larger sites. The outer loop is primitive camping, primarily for smaller trailers and tents. There is a limited number for sites for bigger RVs. The sites are nicely spaced for privacy. Campground hosts were very friendly and helpful. Restroom were very clean and serviced several times per day. You have one source for fresh water and a small dump station on the inner loop. Rate includes the reservation fee. We would recommend this campground for visiting Baltimore which is approximately 14 miles away. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Tent.

What a beautiful park. It seems like you are out in the woods away from it all, yet, within a very short amount of time, you can be in the lovely, quaint Ellicott City or in Baltimore. We loved it. The park is well-maintained and the rangers and staff are very friendly and helpful. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Travel Trailer.

We really enjoyed the setting, the size of the site (we were on 403 with our 31 foot rig, towing a full size car). The showers and bathrooms were convenient but lots of insects took refuge there, attracted by the light and the open doors. Water supply was centralized and of great quality. Sites were tidy and well-tended. Their greatest drawback is the poor advisory signage for those driving a vehicle over 11 feet tall. Signs are placed on Route 40, causing all kinds of confusion even to those who are not using the camp. Simply put, if you drive something taller than 11 feet and are UNABLE TO BACK UP, DO NOT enter the park by way of WESTBOUND Route 40. Make your entrance by way of the EASTBOUND route 40. Even using that entrance, DO NOT (under any circumstances) drive beyond the check-in hut. If you plan to arrive late, PHONE ahead to make sure someone can open the gate for you. I've filed my concerns with the State Park service but they're going to have to work with the MD DOT to get this fixed and I'm betting this is not going to happen soon. We camped at Patapsco Valley State Park - Hollofield Area in a Motorhome.
