Worst cg we have stayed at yet. Dirt roads with large rocks and potholes. Mgmt tried to put us in a dirt field without fhu. Spoke with mgmt to get that changed to a fhu with some grass. Site looked reasonably level but ended up with a high step when all said and done. Picnic table was in very poor condition. 50amp service would not manage our ACs and other appliances. The maintenance man tried to say no 50amp service would support our big rig. This is soooo incorrect. No problem anywhere else. Smelled bad by bathroom. Probably from the greasy chicken griller trailer. People had dogs off the leash. Another group was playing loud music. Would not recommend this place to anyone. - FT Travelers3
Jun 2017 - $40.00
New owner as of last fall and he is making improvements as he can. The entrance road is horrible. It is gravel and full of potholes. Transient camping is pretty much in an open field. Campground caters to seasonals as we have found to be the case in most independent campgrounds in the Northeast. This could be a good campground in a couple years. - Bamagolfer
Jun 2016 - $50.00
This is a difficult one to review. The sites are all different. We were out in the middle of a huge grass field that had a dirt, extremely dusty road dividing it. Every time a vehicle drove by we were covered in dust. There was no sitting outside. There were small travel trailer sites all along the perimeter. Some sites looked very unlevel. Its definitely hit or miss here. Old campground. For our two night layover it was fine but would not stay longer. Very overpriced. - Lin and Rich

Aug 2017 - $75.00
We had a Good Sam discount, but it was very expensive for what you get in an RV campground. Monday through Thursday is $65, and Friday through Sunday is $75/night! We had 50 AMP electric, water, sewer, and cable. We did not use cable, but had many Over The Air Channels. The staff at Melville Ponds is very helpful and nice people. We were under the shade trees. The site was on a slant, so our 5th wheel tires on one side were off the ground to get level. It was a quiet RV campground. It is 5 miles north of Newport. There is a small laundry with 2 washers, and 2 dryers that was inexpensive. There is no pool or activity room, but they have a small playground for the kids. We did not use the restrooms or showers, so we cannot comment on them. It was the most convenient and close RV park to the Navy Base for our activities. It was just too expensive for what they provide, but I guess they can get away with it due to lack of competition. - Lindy White
Aug 2017 - $80.00
Great location, great spots, great staff, high price. Level spots, 50 amp, pull thru, patio, fire pit, good space. Great location for trips to Jamestown, Fall River & Newport. We really like this place, just wish the price was more inline with other campgrounds.
Take the entrance off Main Street at the middle school. If you enter from anywhere else, you end up on a long dirt, washboard road. It will dust up and shake you up. - KodiTzu
Jul 2017 - $65.00
We stayed one night in site #218, a back-in site with W/E/S. The roads aren't overly tight but the way they are laid out and where the trees are, this site is more of a pain to get into than it should be. The spot itself is fine. Note that despite what their website says, ALL of their sites have full hook ups. This isn't a fancy park, but clean and fine for passing through. Bathhouses, laundry, and grounds were all clean. Their internet was excellent. We had full LTE cell service (AT&T). The signage on the way in leaves you hanging, but we figured it out anyways. It brings you in along a long bumpy road. Google Map's directions, on the other hand, takes you by a school, but it brings you to the campground with only a little of the bumpy dirt road. This is what I'd recommend. - texasAUtiger

Camp is needing some overall updating. It is pleasant with a pond for the kids, though parents weren't watching them. Minature golf is not kept up and needs a lot of TLC. Pool was very clean and well kept. Restrooms were not bad. I hear the camp is for sale and it looks as if it needs someone to bring it into this year, but not bad in general. We would stay there again. Note: They only accept cash and pets must be less than 25 lbs. - ctreichel

Just about impossible to find anything wrong with this park. Water pressure was great. Everything was very clean, including the dumpsters, LOL! Showers are heated, individual, locking rooms. I used the laundry and that also was very clean. We were there in a 40' MH just after they opened for the season. There are a lot of activities, but we did not make use of them. It is very family oriented with lots of kids, so if I were to come back, I'd do it out of season. - CnCOntheGo
Oct 2017 - $78.00
This is a most outstanding campground. If the majority of other campgrounds were 1/2 as nice, the industry would have an entire different perception. This is one of the relatively few places that truly can call themselves a camping "resort". As other reviews have shared, the people, facilities, activities and amenities are matched by few. They even have a "concierge" on staff who we observed being very detailed and helpful to a couple looking for customized itinerary in the area. We typically use a campground as a place to park and base from to explore the area. We found ourselves not wanting to leave during the day and instead enjoy the facility. Next time we will stay longer to do both. The location is ideal for visiting Cape Cod, Rhode Island and greater Boston. Love their fire pits that are banked against giant boulders to push the heat towards you and protect the neighboring site. As soon as RV departs, team members come and put out the embers, rake the fire pit and clean it up for the next guest. Even Disney doesn't do that. Some of the sites have pretty good shade that will interfere with satellite so inquire about that if you want to use your dish. - McGarrert50

Oct 2016 - $50.00
We had a group of 4 rigs in the Pull Through, PT 14- PT23 section. These sites are larger than most of the rest and we had good satellite service. We had no problem with large dogs and the owner told us the person that had the pit bulls (see prior review) was not a permanent or seasonal. The park is large and has a large number of campers. We used the limo to and from the train station and they never failed to pick us up. We would return IF we could get a site in that section. Most of the other sites are too small for a 40' rig and are surrounded by many trees. We had good 50 amp service. - johnwadams
Jul 2016 - $39.00
This is a nice old school campground. Perfect for kids if your not hyper protective as there bunch of play areas, two pools and a lake/pond with paddle boat and canoe rentals available. I paid 270. a week so it broke down to 39. a night. Some sites are huge while others are only OK for smaller campers or tents. They let you drive through to check out the sites before paying. Very friendly and helpful staff. Will definitely return if I'm in this part of the country again. - luvoutside
Aug 2015 - $50.00
If you own a dog, do not visit this park. There are at least two sets of pit bulls owned by permanent residents who attack other dogs regularly. I witnessed a severe attack and the owner of the victim dog was taken off his feet and injured while trying to defend his poor pet.
This is a relatively large campground with too many permanent residents. There are apparently no clutter limits at each site. At one site there was an old sofa parked outside as if it belonged. The roads are certainly accessible and most of the sites are level with adequate shade. Weekend activities load up the energy in the park for the kids. - Charisma1965

Small park of only 6 side-by-side sites. Nothing exciting to look at, but great location. Near base and all the activities that Newport has. There is a portable toilet, but no bathrooms. Great price for camping in the northeast, especially if you have a family--no extra charge for kids. - RVerFamily
Sep 2017 - $25.00
Operated by Newport Naval base. Military or DOD may use. This is a great location for visiting the Newport R.I. area. Located off the base, but adjacent to a base recreation area, backs up to a beautiful view of Narragansett bay. There is a Porta Potty, any other facility requires a several mile drive. Great Base fitness center on base. I down graded the service because they do not keep the website up to date, and locations and phone contacts are not current. Requires a little investigative work. All 6 sites are back in, widely spaced, long, and easy to enter. - mroswell
Sep 2017 - $25.00
It would be near perfect if it had sewer and Wifi. The sites are in an open field. Each site is well packed gravel, level (without weeds and stuff growing in them) surrounded by well cut grass. They are very long and the back end of the RV's are about 50 feet in from some bushes that are right on the water. There is probably 30 feet between each RV (only 6 sites). Lots of elbow room. There is a well traveled road at the entrance, but it isn't bothersome. The base is only a couple miles up the road with a very nice NEX and Commissary. This is a nice base as it is home to the War College. High ranking officers training to be higher ranking officers. Newport is a very nice town with beautiful marinas. - jomark

An older small campground. Mostly seasonals but there are some sites for transients. Electric is only 15 amp and not at all sites. However, it is on a very pretty pond. Road in has many low branches and is narrow. If you are coming from the east, be sure and take the 2nd end of Peachem Lane (it is semi-circular). Poor signage. Nice folks. - sleeps2

We had a wonderful time hiking around the well marked trails and swimming in the lake. The sites varied in level but were fine for our little travel trailer. There was enough to do without leaving the campground for simple bike riding, hiking, and swimming. It is really nicely located for day trips to Plymouth and Cape Cod. Park Rangers were visable making the campground safer for the single camper. I would recommend this State Park to anyone for a simple trip or group rally. - sleepless

After reading RVP reviews and looking forward to our stay, we were very disappointed in Westport. It seemed like MOST of the occupants were long term, with lots of unnecessary 'stuff' around the sites. The bathrooms and showers were just acceptable. The hook-up for our sewer was the most 'mickey mouse' set up we have ever seen. Sadly, we would not consider staying here again. - Cinzia
Jul 2016 - $45.00
Good spot to do day trips to Newport, R.I., Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Plymouth and Cape Cod. Caters mostly to seasonal campers. Family owned and maintained. Staff were friendly and helpful. See homemade video located on webpage. Campgrounds do not quite live up to the video. An average campground. Very dusty during our stay due only to lack of rain. Campsites are right on top of each other and extra care is required to back into tight sites. They do not rent to campers older than 2002 because of the age. Humorously, lots and lots of rules. The sinks were push down cold water. - Mike from Bama

May 2017 - $45.00
Nighly rate is $45, but they charged an extra $10 for the Memorial Holiday weekend. This is a older campground with dated facilities. But the electric, water, and sewer were adequate. The campground has two sections, one to the right of the entrance road and the other to the left. The sites to the right are mostly seasonal and permanents. The roads here are real rough with large boulder tops that you drive over. There are also a lot of tree limbs to watch out for. The left side of the campground looked to be the better option. Most of the sites there were in a large field. Sites in both sections were mostly level, call them lumpy. But we had no problem leveling after taking time to position our MH. They have WiFi, but we were unable to connect to it from our site. OTA TV and Verizon cell were both good here. - Bob and Inga
Aug 2016 - $40.00
I chose this campground because I wanted to be able to make easy day trips to both Newport and Providence and this proved to be well situated for that. There are gravel driveways and grassy sites which included a picnic table. The transient sites are in a large open area with mostly pull through sites. We had a 30 amp electric, full hookup site. They offer free WiFi that worked very well for us. There is a cell tower within sight so our AT&T signal was strong, around -77 dBm. There is a pool, although we didn't make use of it. The bathroom was OK, somewhat rustic but generally clean, however, it could use more light. The owners seem to be part time and are absent for hours at a time and may take some time to even return your call. We paid $40 per night. They accept cash or check only. - Coopsecondact
Jun 2016 - $40.00
This campground has actually been excellent for the past 6 years. However they are now 50+ and do not want families with small children. So be aware if you are going there that it is great unless you are a family. Retirees only with grandchildren as visitors only. - LKD
