The camping fee of $23 was somewhat misleading if you aren't a Michigan resident. You also need to purchase a recreational pass for your motorhome which is $6.00/day or $31.00/year. Then you need to purchase an additional pass for your towed vehicle which costs $6.00 and is good for the duration of your camping stay. The campground is heavily wooded and satellite TV impossible. The weekend was so crammed with campers and their guests it was very difficult to maneuver to our campsite. The sites are grass and dirt and the many rutted sites indicated that rain would make a lot of the campground unusable. Lots of paved rec trail for cycling and walking/jogging and lots of beach. The bay water appeared to be very dirty and in the morning a lot of scum had washed up onto the beach. We camped at Bay City State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

Had a great lunch at Castaways on the river just down the road from the park. Fresh walleye sandwiches on the river deck watching the boaters.

Loved this campground and will definitely stay here again when in the area! The walking paths are terrific, the showers are great, the bathrooms are clean. The park is pretty quiet for having so many sites. Nice and shaded. Two showers/bathroom facilities, so no matter where you're at in the campground, the restroom/showers are easily accessible. Next time, we'll bring our bikes, as the park and paths are also ideal for biking. I would encourage anyone to visit this park, and take numerous walks over to the bay. If you've got children, there is a very nice playground/sprinkler park along with many pavilions for a picnic....besides the beach with shells for the kids to pick up! (or the adult, if you're like me ;)!) We camped at Bay City State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.

This campground is shady and relatively attractive. All sites are on the natural ground except for a few paved ones, so be prepared to level your rig. Sites are not well-defined, which allows some flexibility on how to set up. The new bathhouses are a delight! Some road noise from the local road, particularly at one end of the campground. This is a nice family park close to Bay City. There is a lot to do for kids and adult in this area. The swimming is no the best but I was informed that the chamber of commerse is going to install piers for swimmers that go out past the green slime. Once you get past the slime the swimming is good nice sandy bottom. We camped at Bay City State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

Nice park with plenty of good sites to choose from. The bathrooms have both been rebuilt in the last couple of years and are real nice. We camped here for a Halloween Harvest Festival weekend, and it was packed with lots of families. Overall it's a real nice place, but as mentioned the water can be a little nasty for swimming, we stopped by in the summer and the beach was a long walk from the campground and didn't appear to be used due to muck in the water. But for a spring or fall trip this is a nice place and an easy drive from SE Michigan. If you need firewood there is an oil change place on hwy 13 just as you get to Kawkawlin that will sell 1/2 ($22.50) or full face cords ($45), which I thought was real reasonable for good hardwood, as the firewood purchased near the park was soft, rotted and/or wet. If the beach was nicer I would rate this park an easy 9, but gave it a 7 due to not being the best option for a hot summer day. We camped at Bay City State Recreation Area in a Travel Trailer.

This state park campground is very nice. The staff is extremely friendly and the bathroom/shower facilities are immaculate. There are nice walking trails around a lagoon and a visitor center with local entertainment on summer weekends. A word of caution though! If you are going to this campground to use the beach for swimming, forget about it. The beach is completly unusable due to smelly, sticky algae that covers the shoreline. An Internet search turned up news articles that indicate this problem has existed for at least ten years and is a hot local topic. We camped at Bay City State Recreation Area in a Motorhome.
