This would be a great park for families with children. Nice swimming beach and water activities. The spaces are ample and ours was level. No smaller trees or shrubs between sites so no privacy. Quiet at night. Great wi-fi but we were near the bath house so don't know about further out in the campground. Strong cell service. We camped at Van Riper State Park in a Motorhome.

Date of Stay: June, 2018 - $29.00
Overall Rating:

We stayed midweek in the middle of June without a reservation. Only about 1/3 of the sites were occupied. The gate attendant told us to drive in and select a site and then come back and pay. Navigating the loops with a large 5th wheel took a lot of concentration because of encroaching and overhanding trees. I only spotted a couple of suitable sites [but I only needed one :-) ]. Later, walking the loops, I observed that actually there were many suitable sites, I was just too focused on driving to spot them. There were even a few pullthrus I did not notice initially. So my recommendation is to park near the entrance and walk the loops to select your site. You can examine them more closely, and after picking one focus your attention on backing in safely. One other point, the park is sandy, and the sand sticks to everything when wet so expect to be cleaning up a lot of sand after your visit. We camped at Van Riper State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

Following a beautiful drive along the shore of Lake Superior, with a stop at Tahquamenon Falls State Park, we ventured further west to beautiful Van Riper State Park on Lake Michigamme. There are 2 campgrounds, one "Rustic" with 40 sites and the other "Modern" with 147 sites. We opted for the "Modern" with electric hookup (water was spaced throughout the campground). Sites are well-spaced, fairly level grass and dirt with plenty of space between campers, but not a whole lot of privacy. Each site has a nice picnic table and a fire ring. Firewood is available at the check-in as well as ice. We arrived at 4:30pm on a Monday and there were lots of sites available. Very friendly person at the dest gave us a map and told us to take a drive through and pick a spot from the many available. We picked #43, forested on one side and close to the beach. We were disappointed with the road noise at first, but it quieted down at night. Also train tracks nearby with a train arriving at 7 pm and another at 7 am so it didn't bother us during the night. Just steps from our sites was a stairway down to the lake and we experienced a beautiful sunset the first night. The swimming beach was a short walk from the site. We would definitely stay here again! We camped at Van Riper State Park in a Motorhome.

Tips for other Campers:

The sandy beach is beautiful, and there is a bath house, benches and a playground. There are some nice nature walks and wildlife viewing areas. Also several walking paths with beach access leading to another part of the park with boat launch and convention center. We liked it so much we decided to stay an additional night and set out on our bicycles and were able to find a nice 17 mile ride down a quiet logging road across the highway toward Clowry and back again. It was great fun.

Oh, my! What a beautiful park! On-line reservations were made with ReserveAmerica, so their up-charge is reflected in the rate. Check in was friendly and easy. Our site was ADA, which I did not knowingly request. Perhaps a glitch with RA, or perhaps I wasn't paying attention and clicked through the reservation process. We are only here for an overnight, so no problem according to the ranger. Sites are very roomy - electric only. This campground is very family friendly; satellite-friendly not so much, but our site worked. And - the best for last - FREE WiFi! We are very impressed with Michigan state parks. MI DNR you are three for three. Well done! We camped at Van Riper State Park in a Fifth Wheel.
