Great state park on Lake Superior. Sunsets were amazing. Sites are level and spacious. Bring an extension cord as the power was 75 feet away from the site. They are improving the bathrooms, but the existing ones are clean with plenty of hot water. Staff and campground hosts were friendly. We stayed in site 82, two nights so that we could take a day trip to Copper Harbor. We cannot wait to return to this beautiful park. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

We were disappointed to learn that we could only stay one night, as all sites were reserved for a music festival weekend.  Only the camp sites on the lake have great views, and we would try to return for one of those sites.  We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

Many maps list this as McLain State Park, rather than FJ McLain, and this can cause confusion finding out about the park including RV Park Reviews. It is a long tarmac drive surfaced park along the low sand cliffs bordering Lake Superior about 8-9 miles north of Hancock. Beautiful lake shore view including sunsets. Cleanly kept. Lots of wooden benches. Long drives for bikers and loads of kids having a wonderful time biking. Now for the negatives. Three showers and 3 flush toilets plus several pit toilets for 104 sites. Most of the sites are very irregularly unlevel and most of the electrical power outlet post are between widely spaced sites and way back from the drives, many in undergrowth. Most sites will have to have long extension cords to get electricity, and bring lots of leveler blocks. For the poor site surfacing and poor electrical post locations, and inadequate bath facilities I rate it down to a 7. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a fantastic setting on Lake Superior. Park was clean and well maintained. Site 82 was tight for our 40' MH because of the slope of the asphalt and decorative boulders. We needed approx. 40' of electrical cord to hook up for 30 AMP. This park is all about the view and sandy/rock shoreline. PS: Bald eagles are around the park We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Motorhome.

This is a beautiful campground on Lake Superior. They have double wooden resort chairs on the lake which are wonderful for sunning or watching the sunset. We stayed in site 14 which was a very easy in/out. The site was level enough. The camp hosts have lots of information on the area just outside their RV which is very helpful. The only problem one might find in this park is the location of the electrical boxes. In some cases you might need up to 75 feet of electrical cable. The only reason for the 9 rating is the position of the electrical boxes and of course no water or sewer hookups. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Fifth Wheel.

We dearly loved our stay at this park. The view of Lake Superior is beyond words. The main roads were paved. Some sites had asphalt pads and some were grassy. Each site had a picnic table, fire ring, there was a good distance between each site and the sites were level. Verizon cell service was very weak. Due to the marvelous trees we were unable to use our roof satellite. There are no elaborate amenities (cable, 50 amp, Wi-Fi, sewer, water) but the natural scenery more than makes up for the lack of the extras. The campground was quiet and peaceful. We used it as a base to see Copper Harbor, Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, Calumet, Hancock and Houghton. We would definitely return to this park if we were in the area again. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Motorhome.

Very attractive campground with well-spaced sites. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the higher-number sites (for the most part) are more private and wooded, while the others are close to the showers and restroom. The weather while we were there was very calm and warm for the season, so the pit toilets were not at all pleasant: hence I did not rate this campground higher. Trash bins are provided at the entrance to this long and narrow campground: so it's quite a walk for some sites, but you don't have to pack your trash home with you (that just applies to day visitors). Electric hookups are available for each site but may require several extension cords. The big plus is the lake. The campground provides several Adirondack-style chairs positioned at strategic view spots along the edge of the lake, and there are a couple decks along the lake-edge bluff as well. Access to the beach is via steps from one or more of the decks. Very peaceful park; quiet hours are "all the time" and must be enforced, as the weekend nearly filled the campground, but we never observed any loud noise. We would return again (and have a favorite site picked out for that event.) We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

The view of Lake Superior was beautiful! Site was back-in electric only. There was an asphalt pad for the trailer and some grass and dirt with a fire ring and table. Site had good vegetation around it for privacy. Went in to Calumet for ice cream at what looked to be an old gas station at one time that is now a coffee house, good stuff. Also good are the pasties at Jim's pizza in Calumet. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Travel Trailer.

This park offers peace and quiet, serenity and unmatched sunsets over Lake Superior. It's large and very peaceful. There is not much to do except hike, bike ride and enjoy the beach and lake. For us, this campground had everything we like about camping. Negative things were no sewer hookups, but there is a dump station. Also, they have no dumpsters so you must take out any trash you bring in yourself. The site we had was right on the lake, site # 78, very large and open. There is a campfire area and picnic table at each site. The roads are paved and its very neat and well kept up. We had a nice stay at this park. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Motorhome.

Expensive even without including the required motor vehicle permits ($58 total for MH and car yearly passes otherwise it's $8 per day for the MH and $6 per park for the toad) and they don't have water at the sites but once you get over that the park isn't bad if you get the right site. We had site #24 which was pretty level, shaded and big enough for our 30 ft class A but had no privacy whatever. Our area of the campground was really crowded the weekend we were there but thankfully not too noisy. The larger sites with some greenery between for privacy are about 48 through 71. They are quite a distance from the showers but pit toilets are nearby. Bath/shower house had private individual showers and one in with the restrooms seemed OK but we did not use them. Dump is easy to access and has fresh potable water that you can reach while dumping your tanks. The drive to Copper Harbor through Calumet, Eagle River and Eagle Harbor was worth doing. Ft. Wilkins State Park and the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse exhibits were interesting as well. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Motorhome.

What a wonderful park. The restrooms were cleaned everyday at 10:30am and 3pm. The staff comes within an hour of a camper leaving and makes sure the sites and fire rings are cleaned and raked. Lake Superior has the best sunsets I have ever seen. Swimming can be done at the campground (stairs to the beach) or at the day use area. The site we had (#15) was quite large and across from the bathrooms. Even though we were on the second road we had great views of the lake with no campers obstructing our view. I highly reccomend this park. Our site was not that private but there are many that are but they are smaller. We camped at FJ McLain State Park in a Tent Trailer.

This is a beautiful member of the Michigan State Park system. Most of the sites are paved and level, and most are shaded. The best sites are located steps away from Lake Superior with some of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen. The waterfront has benches angled to the direction of the sunset for optimal viewing. Swimming is available near the outlet of the Portage River, but very cold! The only complaint is one bathroom building supplying the whole campground. The sites are private and well maintained. This park is an absolute joy and one we travel back to again and again.
