Blonde lady at the check-in office was less than pleasant. She scrutinized my paper temporary driver's license as if it were counterfit. "This is what they give you in your state?" she asked dirisively. I pointed out that is was temporary and my permanent plastic card would be arriving in the mail soon, and besides I had a retired military ID also if that made her feel better. It didn't. This scrutney and questioning went on too long. It became not funny anymore, but finally she logged me in ( I had a reservation). The sites are deep in the woods, quiet, spacious and level. The interior roads are narrow in places and require caution. The tent and table pads are excellent. We had a site that appeared from three directions to be completely isolated. This park also has an automatic firewood dispensor. Put in your $5 bill and out it comes. Pretty cool. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Nicely laid out campground with a good variety of site selection. There are walk to tent sites that are nice. If your RV is over 35 feet, we recommend sites in the 100's loop. Onboard water at the dump station on your way in. Clean modern restrooms but the number of showers are limited. Popular campgrounds due to the wide variety of things to do in the area. Reservations are recommended or, for last minute, keep calling. In 2019 the campgrounds is switching to 100% of the sites reservable. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Overall Rating:

This is a great place to camp when visiting sleeping bear dunes park. We have a fifth wheel trailer and there was a nice asphalt pad with plenty of room for our trailer and truck. The sites are electric-only, so you need to onboard water before going to your site, and dump when leaving. There is no wifi and you will definitely need Off to keep the bugs at bay. The sites are nicely spaced out with lots of trees and vegetation separating them and there are abundant walking trails. Because of all the trees you will have to get lucky to get a satellite connection. With those reservations in mind, this campground is still a great base for exploring the park. Also, if you go right on Lake Michigan Road you will end up at the lovely Platte River Beach which is a great place for sunset and only five minutes away. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

We booked on line 6 months prior to our visit. We stayed in the loop that has no hookups. We have solar and at first were worried about the trees but had no issues. You cannot use a generator here. There are electric sites too; all the sites look nice. Most of the paved sites look level and are quite long, but if you are longer than 40ft you may have a problem. I agree with the previous reviewer that the pull-through sites are not long enough or have trees in the way. Many sites have picnic tables and fire pits a few feet away from where you place your rig. Be careful at night as it is really dark. The bathhouses only have two showers so might get crowded in summer. Lake access is convenient and river tubing/kayaking is nearby. Ranger programs start late June. Lots to do here! We enjoyed our stay. Just make sure you bring mosquito repellent. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

A bit on the expensive side for electric only sites, but the campground is beautiful with asphalt sites and roads, and the entire park is gorgeous. The outside sitting areas are a bit strange since most of them are either in the rear or on the drivers side, but most are huge and very nice. I sure wouldn't want to spend any time here during peak season due to crowds, but an early May visit was amazing. The weather was a bit cool, but few campers and you could hike or paddle for miles without seeing another person. Wonderful! Four loops (plus walk-in and group sites) in the campground with loops 1-3 having electric. Most of the sites aren't big rig friendly due to slope, trees, or length, but there are some. Based on the three Ls (length, location, levelness), our favorite sites are: 110, 111, 118, 212, 215(this is our first choice), 316, and 322). Stay away from the pull thru sites if in a big rig as they tend to be short with a tight curve. If you're traveling with a friend, buddy sites 106 and 107 are very nice with a very long driveway. Easily the most dog friendly national park we have been to with dogs allowed on most trails and many beach locations. No bag or waste stations to be found anywhere though. Our first visit so we didn't know what to expect, but we loved it here so much we extended our stay twice! The only ding is a few small branches encroaching into the road, but a crew was there trimming branches over sites, so maybe they'll take care of those as well. Good AT&T data coverage, Verizon was weak. We had good satellite reception, but it was before trees fully leafed out. We already have plans to visit next year at the same time! We camped at Platte River Campground in a Motorhome.

Several miles of great hiking trails, but most are on the short side and easy. Paddle the Platt and/or Crystal rivers (in off season). Grocer's Daughter Chocolate is amazing with incredible chocolate, but be prepared to drop some cash!

Overall Rating:

Large, well laid out campground. Sites are spaced nicely with good room between them and lots of trees. Consequently, satellite reception is spotty. Many, many miles of hiking trails, although many are in the sand. Great put-in spots on the Platte River for canoes/kayaks. Rental boats also available at the outfitter just outside the front gate. Friendly , knowledgeable staff. The showers are nice (private room), but they need more of them - frequently there is a waiting line. Firewood vending machine next to the bathhouse between loops 2&3! The Sleeping Bear Dunes are approx 17 miles from the CG, and other attractions are spread out among this sprawling park. The main dunes spill right into Lake Michigan about 400 feet below. There is also the dunes climb (110 ft.) if you're not brave enough for the main dunes. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is pretty, but the Maritime Museum isn't on the same level as the rest of the park. Keep your tank full - the closest diesel fuel is 20 miles from the CG, and the park is huge. Power is good, no local TV reception, Verizon coverage=3/5, no water at the sites. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Pretty, wooded, clean campground. Ranger very helpful when phoned campground for info on site size details for our large trailer. Was lucky to find a campsite large enough to accommodate our 37' trailer, and still required careful manuevering to back it into site because of trees across the road. Trees and shrubbery provided some screening from neighbors. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Travel Trailer.

Our second visit in six years. Beautiful park with a dense forest of pine and deciduous trees. Lots of privacy between sites. Also very quiet night and day. The location is perfect; right in the middle of one of the most scenic areas of the county with hundreds of miles of hiking and multi-use trails along with charming villages like Frankfort and an easy drive to Traverse City and all its attractions. The campground is a adjacent to a very pretty beach where the Platte River terminates in Lake Michigan. The beach was soft sand and the water surprisingly warm. One may also canoe on the Platte River.

The campsites are electric only. This is no big deal except for the fact that the shower house next to our site #109 had only two showers. Some nights there were six or more people waiting their turn! There seemed to always be some sort of wait regardless of time of day. Perhaps the end of the token showers has its consequences...Regardless, the Park Service needs to add showers. The bathrooms and showers were usually OK, sometimes clean and sometimes seemed neglected for a day or so. We did not receive any TV stations over the air, and our At&t cell phone had weak signal strength. There is a convenience store right outside the campground for basic groceries; otherwise you can travel about 15 minutes to Buelah for a full scale grocery store. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Travel Trailer.

The park was very clean as always. Sites are not all level but are paved with good grills, table areas, and tent site areas for each site. Trail to the lake is good. Wood is available at the site and dry. Electric and showers used to be extra and now are included in the base fee which makes this a real good deal. Very busy September mid-week. Weather was great so the campers came out! Sites are paved and level. Very spacious sites with just enough distance between.

2/3 of the sites are reservable. Loop 2 and part of loop 4 are "first-come-first-served". I recommend reservations but we did luck into a site without one. The next morning I had to check-in and find another site, again with luck there was one. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Fifth Wheel.

Overall Rating:

We camped at Platte River for the second time in October, 2014. We thoroughly enjoy this park. The campsites are paved, level, and spaced generously apart. Sites are set in the woods with just the right amount of privacy--you can see your neighbors but can't hear their conversations, etc. The majority of the sites are on the outside of the loops, so you have no one camping behind you. The bathrooms are newer, well maintained, and immaculately clean. The showers require tokens, but are very nice. There is a dishwashing sink outside each bathroom which helps you conserve water usage/dumping as there are no water or sewer hookups. There is much to do in the area. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Shoreline was voted the most beautiful place in America on ABC's Good Morning America several years ago for good reason. Beautiful sandy beaches stretch for miles. There are lighthouses to visit, trails to hike, dunes to climb, lakes to kayak, etc. The Platte River runs parallel to the campground--it is very shallow and warm--tubing down the river is the ultimate in relaxation! We camped at Platte River Campground in a Motorhome.

We loved our six night stay here and would have stayed longer if we could. The rate reflects a senior discount. I never give more than a 7 usually to a park with electricity that does not have water but this was just such a great place. The one drawback is that it is 10 miles from the rest of Sleeping Bear Dunes national seashore and there are few trails here although there is the shallow Platte river to canoe or kayak. Would definitely return. We camped at Platte River Campground in a Motorhome.
