Full hook ups on the river. Nice site. Restrooms are shared with nearby park. Not the best set up. No showers. No dogs allowed in the park nearby, kind of inconvenient. Tight getting into and out of the spot with my motorhome, but doable. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Some sites allow for reversing your MH and face the water. Clean and well maintained. Hosts most helpful for sites in the area. Lots to see in the area for day trips. Would come again. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

What a pleasant surprise. Not like any City park we've ever been to. The entrance is off the highway and just down a hill. Small sign so be on the lookout. You cross a narrow bridge and past some playground tube slides to get to the RV park. There is ample room to park your RV and register. The roads are paved and a bit narow but really no problem. The host is very friendly and knowledgeable of the area. The RV park sits right on the portage canal with views of Hancock across the water and the lift bridge. Some sites are more level than others, and the upper row appears to have more satellite reception challenges. All sites are asphalt, with grass and a covered deck in the rear with picnic table and bench. Each site has a big fire pit. Some of the sites in the upper row, 1-12, have more landscaping separation. All sites are back in. The sites are carved out on the front end to park your toad. Our site was level and right on the water. The utilities and cable were good. Strong cell signal. WiFi was mostly good to very good. There are toilets you can use at the recreation park a short walk away. The City park stretches along the canal past the lift bridge and makes for a very nice walk, about a mile and a half round trip. You can wash your car for $5 and your RV for $10. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

We loved this park! The City of Houghton has really made it a lovely place to stay when visiting the area. All sites are back-in and we had a site right on the waterway. Each site has a covered table and a park bench sitting on a deck behind your RV. Our back window overlooked the deck and the wonderful views of the waterway and the town of Hancock on the other side. The bike/walkway along the water is lovely with freshly planted annuals and herbs and across the street from some incredibly homes. It is a mile and a half walk round trip from the RV park to the bridge. Yes, stopping at Roy's bakery is a must. Dan Kemp, the manager, was very helpful and friendly. We told him we were ancestor hunting and he directed us to people and places to do research. He's a Yooper and has written a great book that you can buy from him at a discounted price and get it autographed. The nearby day use park does not allow dogs so you have to walk your dog on the bike path along the water. Love this place and if it weren't so far from home (Nevada) would visit it often! We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

First Impression: Very, very nice. Back-in to a waterfront site on the Portage River. Attractive. Safety: no concerns. Access: Michigan route 26, just south of the river. Look for small brown "camping" signs on road. Municipal road in good condition, no big sign, GPS took us right in. Office: Occasionally manned but camp host is next door. No store. Credit cards accepted. Call for reservations. Facilities: No pool, spa, fitness, or rec room. No laundry room. Restrooms part of city park but no showers. No propane sales. City park (next door) has huge playground, river swimming area. No off-leash dog run. Campground: Roads are asphalt, sufficiently wide with gentle turns and no overhead obstacles. Big rig friendly. Prevosts will just fit. Sites are all spacious, back-in with trees and bushes between most sites. No tent area, yurts, or cabins. Sites are asphalt and sufficiently wide but some sites "tilt" towards the water making auto-leveling difficult (our front jacks bottomed out). Utilities at mid-rig with full hookups-20/30/50; no meters. Adequate water pressure with good taste. Sewer pipe is 4" threaded, about 2-3" above ground level. Nice, covered concrete patio with aging picnic tables. Fire rings and elevated, charcoal BBQ grills; wood at $5/small bundle. Poor satellite views (in a steep river valley). Free cable TV (16 channels). Free Wi-Fi but weak range and very low bandwidth. Verizon phone at 4 bars; 4G at 5 bars. No railroad or aircraft noise but notable local traffic noise. No recycle bins. Bug Report (early June): Big, black bees. Small brown ants stayed on the ground, small black ants invaded the rig. Runners: campground roads good for running, no fitness room so no treadmills. Yoga: patios are plenty big enough for your mat. Conclusion: Overpriced for no amenities; local camping options are limited. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Tips for other Campers:

Houghton is the only major city in this part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. There is a lot of history with copper mines and smelting plants (now as museums). Only a few major chain restaurants (Applebees, Pizza Hut), typical fast food with a few local restaurants. Landromat. Wal-Mart (diesel at $2.449). Econo Foods. Banks. No RV stores. Ace Hardware. Auto dealerships south on route 26.

We have had a really frustrating experience here at Houghton City RV Park. I reserved site #8 on May 18th. We check in and pull up to #8, an excellent site, and it's occupied. Seems we got shuffled because the people in #8 had decided to extend their stay. We were offered several lesser sites even though #5 and #6, both excellent sites, were empty. We got stuck in #10. Big mistake. Even though all sites are blacktop, this one has a large pond right at the hook-ups. When it rain,s as it just had, water and mud collect in this low spot making it difficult to hook up whether you pull in to get the water view or back in. The sites on the front row, #3 thru #9 are excellent. The balance of the sites are very good. Internet is NOT reliable. Does not work with Android tablets at all. Works most of the time on the Windows laptop. Our neighbor has also experienced connection problems with his Apple. Cable TV works well. Some road noise from the street above and behind but quiets down a night. Houghton and the Keweenah Peninsula are great and the camp ground host/manager is a good ambassador for the area. Certainly would stay here again, just make sure to get site #3 thru #9. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

This is a small camping area that is part of a nice city park. It is within walking distance of the park's beach and playground, a very good bakery, and the downtown. Sites are on the water or just above the waterside row. All are wide and include patio space as well as a wood deck that is covered and a picnic table. All have full hookups and a fire ring. Wood is available at the office. The office person is excellent and knows the area well...follow his suggestions for sightseeing. There is no laundry and there are no showers or campground toilets but the beach toilets are nearby. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

Site 15 is not level although all the other sites appear to be level. This site is pretty short and the rear tires will be off the ground if you have a big rig. Bring lots of boards to prevent that from happening. Large plants have grown up around the hookups, so you may need a saw also.

Although this park is over looking a river, none of the sites face the river. Be careful with directions getting here from some GPS units. You cannot get in from Canal Street. That is permanently blocked. As stated in the other reviews, this is a small park all paved in asphalt. One row is next to a road, so expect some noise. Wifi is fair. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

The signage to the office is poor. When you turn in, do not stop at the first building. Go on down the road. The campground is terraced so everyone has a view of the water. Unfortunately it was designed as back-in sites so your windshield is not facing the water. Each site has a covered picnic table and another seating bench. The campground was quiet and we enjoyed our stay. We would camp here again. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Superb park with waterfront views at every site. Only problem is there aren't enough spots; we would have stayed more than two days if there had been a cancellation. Park so you have a view of the water, forward, backward, whatever. When arriving, do NOT turn at Houghton Canal Road: no park access despite the advice of some mapping programs. Lots to do in area but don't miss the Quincey Copper Mine tour ($19 for seniors). We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Allow at least a half day to drive the Copper Island Loop. Lots of places to stop. The town of Gay has a bar. Fort Wilken is almost entirely a re-creation and not recommended. It was Fort Useless: never a shot fired in anger; reopened after Civil War to give the Army a place to put excess troops.

Pleasant park on the river between Houghton and Hancock overlooking the lift bridge. Sites are adequate in size and utilities, including WIFI and cable TV, worked well. Each site has a bench facing the river and a covered picnic table. Little road noise. This place was built 30 years or so ago when RVs were all trailers, so the hookups are positioned at what would be the rear for trailers backing in. If you are in a full sized motorhome and want to look out the windshield at the river, you will need long hose and cord and lots of sewer hose. The best sites for motorhomes are 2 through 10 as they are up high with no sites between them and the river and they are longer than the other sites.

Sites 11 through 15 will work for large motorhomes, but the river view is obstructed by trailers in the sites below. Nonetheless, it is an excellent park and in a great location for visiting the Houghton area. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

Beautiful sites right on Portage Lake. All are back-in. Utilities worked fine. Verizon signal strong. Campground Wi-Fi didn't work at site 9. Sites are paved and slope a little uphill but pretty level side-to-side. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table with cover and a separate bench for sitting and enjoying the view. We walked the paved path along the river into Houghton where there are a lot of good restaurants and bars. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Fifth Wheel.

What a gem of a park! Beautiful well-maintained park along the Houghton canal with covered picnic table/bench at each site. The park is limited to self contained RVs because there are no bathroom/shower facilities. There are also no laundry facilities, but there is a nice laundromat (Loads of Fun) nearby. They advertise free wifi but it never worked for us. Our Verizon mifi worked fine. The campground is located next to a city park with playground and beach. We stayed here 2 weeks and will be back for a longer stay. We camped at City of Houghton RV Park in a Motorhome.

A beauty of an Rv Park, we were right on the water with beautiful scenery, a public beach is right near by. Full hook up on site. It is a little tricky getting into the park with a sharp turn but not bad. The hills in the area are great for beauty. The park is very clean, not for tenting though as they do not have park restrooms and showers. Park supervisor was very nice. We will go back for sure.
